Courses offered by the Bread of Life Academy are: The Prayer of Jesus - Living the Lord’s Prayer — When Jesus taught His disciples how to pray, did He intend for them to merely recite His prayer on a daily basis? Or did He intend for them to live it? Are you living the Lord’s Prayer? Do you want to live a worry-free life? Would you like to live a Kingdom adventure every day? This study will teach you that everywhere you go and everything you do has Kingdom implications. INSTRUCTOR: MIN. RUDOLPH BRITTON Gifts of Grace - Discovering and Using Your Spiritual Gifts — God has given Christian certain gifts—spiritual gifts, or more accurately, gifts of grace. Knowing your gifts and the places they can be used increases our effectiveness as ministers in and through the Body of Christ. INSTRUCTOR: PASTOR DANIEL SANDERS The Life You’ve Always Wanted - Spiritual Disciplines for Ordinary People — Tired of the status quo. Ready to go deeper in your walk with the Lord. HARGROVE, AUTHOR V OLUME 2 01 0, I SSUE 5 P AGE 3 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai after communing with God, his face shone — reflecting the glory of God. When the children of Israel saw the glory of God on his face, they were afraid to come near him. But Moses convinced them to return to him and told them everything that the Lord had spoken to him on Mount Sinai. When he finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face. In Exodus 34, we are told that whenever Moses went before the Lord to speak with Him, he would take the veil off until he came out; and he would come out and speak to the children of Israel whatever he had been commanded and put the veil back on his face. In the third chapter of 2 Corinthians, Paul tells us that Moses wore the veil so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the end of what was fading away. What was fading? The glory of the Lord that shone on the face of Moses was fading. Why was it fading? The Law had just been given but the people were not told that this system was only temporary. The truth was the covenant of Law was a preparation for something greater to come at a later date. Paul also tells us that there was a “spiritual veil” over the minds and hearts of the children of Israel which prevented them from recognizing the truth about their own Messiah. Even though the Old Testament scriptures were being read in the synagogues, the Jewish people did not grasp the spiritual message God had given them. They were blinded by their own religion. But just as Moses removed his veil whenever he turned to God, when one turns to the Lord, the “spiritual veil” is taken away in Christ. No sinner can turn to Christ without the Holy Spirit. Paul tells us: … the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (2 CORINTHIANS 3:17). The Law can only bring bondage, but the Spirit gives us freedom from sin, death, and the condemnation of law and introduces us to a life of liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror, the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord (2 CORINTHIANS 3:18). The mirror is P AGE 4 a symbol of the Word of God (JAMES 1:22-25). We know from JOHN 1: 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. ... 14And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, … As we study and meditate on God’s Word and in it see Jesus, the Spirit transforms us into the very image of God. The word “transformed” describes a change on the outside that comes from the inside. We become more like Jesus Christ as we grow from “glory to glory.” As we look into the Word of God and become hearers and doers of the Word, our countenance should become more and more like Jesus. Just as a mirror reflects the color of your eyes, after looking into the Word of God, do your eyes reflect: … the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, ... (EPHESIANS 1:18)? Just as you look into a mirror, stick out your tongue and say Ahhh. After looking into the Word of God, do you say Ahhh and examine your tongue for: … He who would love life And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit (I PETER 3:10). Just as you look into a mirror to check yourself from head to toe before leaving the house, after looking into the Word of God are you fully dressed from head to toe having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace. Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God? It has been said that you (your walk and your talk) may be the only Bible some people will ever read. When people look at you, what image do they see? If they can’t see the image of Christ, perhaps your mirror might need a little cleansing from the Word of God. It is to show people through dramatization how we interpret different stories from the Bible and fictional stories with a Christian or Spiritual meaning. In order to give GOD excellence, we provide understanding of the stories written by explaining and giving information needed, and as a result the cast and crew will be able to display unity and give great performances. Our productions and plays are written by our very own members. If you are a member of our Springfield family and are interested in participating in any of our upcoming productions or plays, we invite you to come out and audition when the opportunity is presented. We strive to strengthen our households and marriages while building the army of Christ. The Men’s Ministry teaches men how to apply God’s word to their lives in conjunction with the Holy Spirit and not rely on just what is seen. This ministry encourages men, when called upon, to lead the topic of discussion, open with a scripture or lead the ministry in prayer. The teaching of men becoming the head of their household as God leads and requires is a constant goal of this ministry. We invite ALL SBC men to minister with us every Monday night at 7 p.m. in the James A. Gibson Fellowship Hall. MINISTER MARK FARMER, CHAIRPERSON E-MAIL ADDRESS: [email protected] The mission of the History Committee is to collect and retain the history of Springfield Baptist Church. We accomplish this by taking pictures and writing about the events of the church and making it available to our members. We will achieve this mission through and by the will of God. A Bit of SBC History Under the leadership of Rev. Essex Blake (1866-1891), the first service was held under a bush arbor on the east side of Mount Moriah Baptist Church (mother church of SBC). The first church building (now the Springfield Community Center) was erected under the leadership of Rev. Alex Jones (1895-1907). The first person to describe Springfield Baptist Church as “the friendly church in the curve” was Rev. Ollie H. Brodie (1949-1963). In 1977, Rev. Thomas B. Jiles was the first member ordained a minister at SBC. In 1979, Sis. Jesse Pearl Moore was elected SBC’s first Minister of Music. Rev. Daniel Sanders became the 12th Pastor of SBC in June 1980 and he’s still here. On March 27, 1990, the SBC congregation marched from the old church, across the road, to worship in our new sanctuary (now known as the James A. Gibson Fellowship Hall). The first church newsletter, Springfield Baptist Church News, was issued February 10, 1991. In May 2002, the first worship service was held in SBC’s current sanctuary. ROSCOE RICHARDSON was born on August 29, 1930 and grew up on a farm in Nash County, NC. He served in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge in 1956. Shortly after being discharged, he moved to Raleigh and married his special girl, Loretta, on April 5, 1956. Bro. Richardson was interested in learning how appliances operated. He was blessed to find employment at an appliance store in downtown Raleigh, learned to repair appliances, and later achieved the title of Appliance Service Technician. He attended Wake Tech and was later employed by the Montgomery Green Commercial Equipment Company (a job he loved). While driving the company van on November 12, 1984, a car hit him head-on resulting in a large blood clot on his brain. He was not able to continue working. His wife, daughter and three sons loved, cared and nursed him back to health. Most of all, he is thankful that God has kept him and he knows God’s love for him will never fail. Bro. Richardson realizes God’s blessings are overflowing and he is experiencing THE BLESSINGS through his wonderful Springfield family and the wonderful leadership of Pastor Sanders. This was Eboni’s third year making it to the National Junior Olympics. Congratulations Eboni! Submitted by Deacon Herbert Roberson SARAH DUMAS, SYRS, a Needham Broughton High School senior, attended the National Bar Association’s 10th annual Crump Law Camp this summer. The camp was held at Howard University, in Washington, DC, from July 11 to July 24. Sarah was one of only 32 campers selected from over 2,000 applicants nationwide. Only 3.9 percent of the nation’s lawyers are people of color, and the goal of the Crump Law Camp is to encourage students of color to attend college and law school. It introduces high school students (between the ages of 14 to 17) to the civil and criminal justice system by distinguished law professors at Howard University. The National Bar Association (NBA) believes the camp provides an extraordinary opportunity for an enriched experience to the targeted age group. During the afternoons, students experience the history of the nation’s capital; visit the courts, museums, and other significant sites. Students are paired with attorney mentors who offer academic guidance, as well as career counseling. Students also learn trial techniques and compete to participate in the Evett L. Simmons Mock Trial Competition that is held during the National Bar Association’s Annual Convention. Students who attend the Law Camp are paired with college and law students, professors, and practicing attorneys to serve as mentors as they continue through high school, college, and even law school. The Crump Law Camp is named after John L. Crump who served as the NBA’s Executive Director for over thirty-years, and is currently Executive Director Emeritus of the NBA. The NBA has a network of over 44,000 members representing African American members of the bar who are lawyers, judges, law professors, and law students. According to Sarah: “The camp was fun. I met all types of people from all over the United States, even as far away as the Virgin Islands and California. We worked hard during morning and afternoon classes preparing for mock trials by reading over and discussing various cases. We also spent time in study group sessions. Our actual classes were held at the Howard University Law School. For fun, we went on various field trips to places like The Newseum, Superior Court of DC, bowling, and to Kings Dominion. Sarah is the young lady on the left. This was my first experience living in a dorm room and being away from home for more than one week. At the end of camp, we all were sad to leave each other, but glad to be going home. Since camp, we have remained in contact with each other. I recently “met up” with my roommate, Takiyah, while on her visit to North Carolina to tour colleges.” V OLUME 2 01 0, I SSUE 5 P AGE 9 Books of the Bible (Authors and Facts) 1.
