Project Profile
ASSUME
Affordable Safe & Secure Mobility Evolution
An affordable, safe multi-core development methodology that allows industry to deliver trustworthy new functions at competitive prices
to enable consumers to benefit from innovative solutions: this is the aim of the ITEA 3 ASSUME project.
ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGE
The increasing reliance of future mobility
solutions on smart components that
continuously monitor the environment
and assume more and more responsibility
for a convenient, safe and reliable
operation underscores the need for
computing power that is far beyond
today’s conventional sequential singlecore hardware. But its replacement –
omnipresent communication between
cores – poses the tremendous software
development challenge to identify and
exploit opportunities for concurrency in
a way which still guarantees reliable and
predictable behaviour.
PROPOSED SOLUTIONS
The ASSUME consortium of leading
European industry partners, tool and
service providers and research institutes
aim to provide new tools, standards and
methodologies for the efficient
construction and synthesis of embedded
systems as well as new algorithms for
integration in exploitable tools. The
technical focus will lie on formal compiler
verification and on correct real-time
implementation for parallel applications
with, in both cases, dedicated specific
attention to hardware modelling. The
technological innovation will be driven
by the industrial use cases provided
by industrial partners and result in the
design of a Static Analysis Platform
(SAP), a first-of-its-kind platform that will
allow the more efficient development of
safety-critical, concurrent software for
different domains – such as automotive
or avionics – and will enable high-quality,
reliable, fault-free code for future software
systems. In addition, the development
of new interoperability and requirements
formalisation standards will facilitate
cooperation between different market
players.
Use case domains Automotive, Avionics and Consumer Electronics

PROJECTED RESULTS AND IMPACT
ASSUME will have a major and widespread
impact on the quality of life since it
will provide the technology to enable a
responsibility shift from human to the
software-driven system. The safe and
secure realisation of assistant systems
enabled by ASSUME technologies towards,
for example, fully automated driving will not
only improve the energy efficiency of future
mobility systems but also reduce costs and
CO 2 emissions, leading to more comfort,
health and wellbeing for people living in
high-traffic urban areas. Furthermore, the
improvement of development processes
for safety relevant functionalites will
help employees increase efficiency and
performance in their daily work.
All in all, ASSUME will help boost the
quality of life in many areas from safety
and security to mobility and consumer
electronics.

ITEA is the EUREKA Cluster programme supporting innovative, industry-driven, pre-competitive R&D projects in the area of Software-intensive Systems
& Services (SiSS). ITEA stimulates projects in an open community of large industry, SMEs, universities, research institutes and user organisations.
As ITEA is a EUREKA Cluster, the community is founded in Europe based on the EUREKA principles and is open to participants worldwide. https://itea3.org
