Board members present:
Mike Ramirez
Julie Stroud
Carolyn Knittle
Kendall Childs
Hoang Bui
Mark Bakker
Carl Johnson,
Music Director
Mike called the meeting to order, following a 15 minute open forum for discussion of various matters,
especially the mission statement.
The minutes were approved as distributed via e-mail.
Carolyn gave the treasurer’s report. The Bravo grant quarterly amount was received; we paid for
artwork for the Ovation ad. Mike will give Carolyn a bill for repair of the bass clarinet; he will inquire
into the cost of a full restoration for the instrument. The report was accepted.
Hoang reported that plans for the opening orchestra get-together are the same as for last year, with a
variety of types of ice cream bars. She will reserve Fellowship Hall. Carl plans a run-through of most
of the concert music at rehearsal.
Julie discussed grants. The Prairie Meadows due date for applications is September 13th. Mike and Carl
will give her estimates and information about the cost of additional music stands, stand racks and chair
racks. There may be other equipment needs. Julie also reported that all music now has been returned.
Music for the Fall Concert should arrive soon. She wrote a list of policies concerning music which
Mike will include in his annual message.
Carl reported that the new music filing system arrived and is being set up. Carolyn will call the
insurance agent concerning coverage of the filing system and stored music. Carl will verify our library
holdings as he places music in the new system.
The date for the Annual Meeting was set at May 20, 2014, for 6:30 pizza dinner and 7:00 meeting.
Carolyn will check on availability of the room.
Mark has made up a jobs list for orchestra members and will pass around a signup sheet at the second
rehearsal. He will check with Kris about her continuing to handle publicity; Julie will contact Lynn
about sponsorship and advertising packets.
As previously discussed, Julie needs a mission statement for some of the grant applications she makes.
After discussion of requirements, and contributions from board members, a new mission statement was
approved: “Organized in 1976, the Des Moines Community Orchestra provides an opportunity for local
amateur musicians to develop their musical skills by playing symphonic music in a large ensemble; the
orchestra shares its enjoyment of classical music with the public through free performances and
collaborations with other community groups.”
Mike reported that he ordered percussion equipment carry cases; they will be ready by rehearsal time.
Carolyn will continue to get information about postcards as our concert announcements.
There will be a special rehearsal with soloist Andrew Sords on Thursday, October 24th, for all concerto
players.
The next board meeting is scheduled for November 8th at 5:30, location to be determined. The meeting
adjourned at 8:45.
