Organism X: CREATION
You are going to create a new organism, Organism X. This organism should be possible, LOGICAL, and show both
cleverness & originality. In order design your organism, you will first need to complete the following tasks: ➊
determine the closest relative to your organism (be specific) and write a ½ page description of this organism (see
specifics below) and ➋ determine where Organism X lives (type of habitat or biome) and write a paragraph or more
description of that habitat. After you have completed those two steps, you should be prepared to design your
Organism X. ➌ Write a paragraph description of your organism.  Create a full-page picture of your Organism X and
 one or more pictures showing detailed views of 3 or more unique physical features.
When you create your portfolio/binder for your Organism X project, you will NOT put these components in the order that you
completed them. Note the differences below:
 FINAL DRAWING of Organism X, full page, in color. Must be clean, neat, & detailed.
➌ Organism X Introduction: Describe the organism you have created. Organism X must be logical, possible, intelligent, & original. This section will
include one or more paragraph(s) with in-depth description of appearance, behaviors, & uniqueness
➊ It’s all Relative: Research the closest living relative to your Organism X. In a paragraph(s), describe the appearance, behaviors, & habitat of this
closest real relative.
➋ Organism X Habitat: In a paragraph, describe the habitat where your organism will live (i.e. in a pond, under water, on land, in the trees, etc…then
describe the area…more detail is better).
 Focused DRAWING(s) of Organism X’s unique physical features (must include 3 or more), must be a full page or more and in color
Unique traits must be labeled and briefly explained within the context of their habitat
o
OPTIONS:
 Cut out pictures of these traits in other animals and glue the magazine cutouts onto your page
 Draw each area in detail (like a close up) around a picture of the organism
 Draw each area in detail on their own half sheet of paper
Rub ri c:
GOAL: Students will be able to create a logical organism in a habitat.
EXCEEDING/ 4
Completes all requirements for a
PROFICIENT score and goes above
and beyond in multiple areas, which
might include some combination of
the following:
It’s all Relative and/or Habitat
 Include additional pictures
 Shows outside research
 Describes more than required
Introduction of Organism X
 Logical story shows reader the
possibility of this creature
 Pictures show considerable effort
and thought
PROFICIENT / 3
➊ It’s all Relative, researched-based
paragraph describing Organism X’s
closest living relative
 Paragraph or more
 Describe appearance, behaviors, &
habitat of closest real relative
➋ Organism X Habitat
 Paragraph or more
 Description of the habitat where the
organism lives
➌ Organism X
 Logical
 Possible
 Intelligent
 Original
Introduction of Organism X
 Paragraph with in-depth description of
appearance, behaviors, & uniqueness
Focused DRAWINGS of Organism X’s
special traits
 Full page or more
 Sketch must include 3+ examples of
your organism’s unique characteristics
 Text on picture briefly explains each
uniqueness shown
 Pictures are in full color
FINAL DRAWING of Organism X

APPROACHING / 2
➊ It’s all Relative, researched-based
paragraph describing Organism X’s
closest living relative
 Paragraph or more
 Description lacks one of the following:
appearance, behaviors, & habitat of
closest real relative
➋ Organism X Habitat
 Paragraph or more
 Description of the habitat where the
organism lives lacks detail
➌ Organism X
 Logical
 Possible
 Intelligent
Introduction of Organism X
 Paragraph lacks one of the following:
description of appearance, behaviors, &
uniqueness
BEGINNING / 1
Might lack any of these sections:
It’s all Relative, paragraph describing
Organism X’s closest living relative
(lacks background, may have missing
components)
 Describe appearance, behaviors, &
habitat of closest real relative
Habitat information is insufficient
Introduction of Organism X
 Paragraph that lacks some description
of appearance, behaviors, &
uniqueness
DRAWING: 1-2 drawing of Organism X
 black and white
 lack of effort and/or detail
 incomplete and/or missing focused
drawings
Focused DRAWINGS of Organism X’s
special traits
 Full page or more
 Sketch include 2 examples of your
organism’s unique characteristics
 Pictures are in full color
FINAL DRAWING of Organism X
 Full page
 messy
 Pictures are in full color
 Missing Name Plate
The term “drawing” is a generalization. The “drawing” requirement could be drawn, created on the computer, a collage, or drawn by
someone else (so long as you explain exactly what the creature should look like).
