P APPS

POLLING APPS
Classroom Response Systems are a way for instructors to ask students questions during class and each student can
respond using a handheld clicker, but with these polling apps you no longer need clickers. Students can use their
laptop, tablet, cell phone, or any device with Internet and a web browser to answer live questions.

Get Started with Poll Everywhere
1. Create a Poll Question. (Type question in the box and select question type.)
2. Select How People Can Respond
3. Start the Question
a. Display the question to a live audience from the website or downloaded as a
PowerPoint slide. There is a full screen option on the website and you can
display or hide the live chart results.
b. Click ‘Share & Publish’ for options to email the poll, embed it in a webpage,
and get a web response link.
4. Instruct Your Audience How to Respond
a. Text Message: Tell the audience standard text message rates from their provider apply. For
example if you have 250 text messages a month this will count as 1 message.
b. Twitter: The audience can use the Twitter App or website, but they will need a Twitter account.
c. Web: Go to Pollev.com and type the response code to the multiple choice question.
i. For open ended questions provide the private link or set up your own PollEv.com
address, such as pollev.com/brianataylor. I recommend
setting it up so that students can always go to the same web
address and it will also display the entire question instead
of just the box to type the answer code. You will need to
make sure you use the Push button to send your current
question to your personal PollEv.com address.
5. Stop the Question
a. Click Stop Poll
b. You can display results in the live chart or return to the results later.
Get Started with Socrative
1. Log into Socrative.com or download the free Teacher Socrative.com app.
2. Instruct students to go to m.socrative.com or download the free Student app.
a. Tell students to type in the room number, which is listed near the top of the instructor’s page.
b. Students cannot do anything on the site until the instructor runs an activity.
3. Select an activity
a. For on the fly questions, use Single Question Activities:
i. You will need to say the question out loud, write it on the
board or put it in a PowerPoint.
ii. A multiple choice question has choices A-E. There is also
True/False and short answer.
iii. The instructor then clicks on one of the options and the
students answer the question on their screen.
iv. Once the students answer the question, the responses
will show up on the instructor’s screen.
b. Create a quiz under Manage Quizzes then Start Quiz.
d. The Exit Ticket button asks students about their experience
in the classroom that day.
e. The Space Race activity allows instructors to select a quiz
and use as a game for the students.
i. Teams can be auto-assigned or chosen by the students.
ii. The students then answer questions accurately and quickly to try to win.
