Summary of External Readings
Macbeth
by William Shakespeare
Shakespeare took the story from
a book called Holinshed’s Chronicles.
He wrote Macbeth in the early 1600s,
showing the effects of ambition, the
politics of loyalty and betrayal, and the
battle between good and evil. Macbeth
was first performed in 1606 for King James I,
the 1st King of both England and Scotland.
“Fate is stronger than free willand evil is more powerful than good.”
The Important Characters in the Play
Macbeth – he was living in the castle at Inverness. He got the title, Thane of
Glamis when his dad died. He’s a fine man who has a terrible weakness – his
political ambition. Also, He’s a brave and thoughtful soldier who is loved,
admired, and completely trusted by Duncan. But he is thinking about
murdering Duncan. By the end of the play he has become a lonely tyrant, who
is hated by everyone.
“I have committed so many bloody crimes now that I cannot return to the
person I used to be.”
“Life is like a walking shadow, like an actor who performs on stage for a short
time, and then is never heard again.”

Lady Macbeth – Macbeth’s wife is beautiful, strong, and intelligent. But she’s
a very dangerous woman. She’s more ambitious than her husband, and has
a stronger character. She coldly plans the details of Duncan’s murder while
pretending to welcome him to her home. She calls her husband a coward and
a fool as she pushes him into crime.
“Your letter has made me forget the present.
I can only think about the future.”
“You prefer to get what you want without harming everyone.
You want to be king, but you fear what you must do.”
Duncan – the wise and noble King of Scotland
“You cannot read a man’s mind by looking at his face. I really trusted him.”
Malcolm – Duncan’s eldest son, Prince of Cumberland escaped to England
after his father’s death. He is staying in England with a good King, Edward, and
Macduff has gone to England, too.
“Let your grief turn to anger and harden your heart.”
Donalbain – Duncan’s youngest son
Three witches – they predict that Macbeth will be the King.
“Good is evil, and evil is good.”
Banquo – he’s a Thane and a friend of Macbeth.
Fleance – Banquo’s son

The Thane of Cawdor – he’s the most disloyal traitor to the King Duncan; he
supported the King of Norway. His rank is higher than Macbeth. Finally, he was
executed.
Macdownald – he’s a cruel leader of the King of Norway. Finally, he was killed
by Macbeth.
Macduff – he’s a Thane of Fife.
Lennox, Ross, Menteth, Angus, Cathness – they’re Scottish Thanes.
Seyward, Lord of Northumberland – he’s a powerful English Lord to bring an
army against Macbeth and free Scotland from these unhappy times of danger
and suspicion.
Summary
Act 1
Macbeth, the Thane (or lord) of Glamis, and his friend Banquo meet
three witches. The witches predict that Macbeth will become the new Thane of
Cawdor and King of Scotland, and that Banquo’s children will be future kings.
Macbeth is rewarded by King Duncan for his heroism in battle by being made
Thane of Cawdor, he begins to take the rest of the prophecy seriously. Duncan
and his sons come to Macbeth’s castle to spend the night. Lady Macbeth learns
of the witches’ prophecy and, although Macbeth is somewhat reluctant, she
persuades him to kill the king.
Acts 2−3
Macbeth imagines he sees a bloody dagger inviting him to commit
murder. Lady Macbeth has given Duncan’s guards wine mixed with drugs.

As they are sleeping, Macbeth enters Duncan’s room and kills him. Lady
Macbeth tells him to put blood on the drunken guards, so that they will appear
to be the murderers. However, Macbeth is too frightened to do it, so his wife
does it for him.
Later, everyone knows that King Duncan has been murdered. Macbeth
kills the two drunken guards, explaining that he did it out of love for the king.
Malcolm and Donalbain, Duncan’s sons, leave for England and Ireland secretly,
afraid that they will be murdered. The sons are suspected of paying the guards
to kill Duncan, and Macbeth is crowned king of Scotland.
Macbeth invites his friend Banquo to a special dinner at his castle. By
now, Banquo suspects that Macbeth is the real murderer. Macbeth worries
about the witches’ prophecy concerning Banquo’s children becoming kings, so
he arranges to have his friend and son murdered. Banquo is killed, but his son
escapes, and Macbeth is haunted by Banquo’s ghost at the dinner. Many
people suspect Macbeth of the murders and begin calling him a tyrant.
Acts 4−5
Macbeth consults the witches again, and is reassured to hear that he will
be killed by ‘no man born from a woman’, and will be safe from danger until
the trees of Birnam Wood march against him. He has the wife and family of his
archenemy, Macduff, murdered, and confidently awaits battle with his
enemies. Just before the battle, Lady Macbeth kills herself. A messenger then
tells Macbeth that a forest is moving towards the castle (in order to attack
Macbeth’s castle, Macduff and the soldiers camouflage themselves with
branches cut from trees in Birnam Wood). The battle is lost, but Macbeth
refuses to surrender because he still believes that he cannot be killed. He fights
Macduff and almost wins, but Macduff tells him that he was not born naturally
– he was cut from his mother’s body. Macbeth knows all is lost but still doesn’t
surrender. Macduff kills him, and King Duncan’s son, Malcolm, is hailed as the
new king of Scotland.

The Client
by John Grisham
Summary
The Client is a fast-moving thriller set in the southern United States.
It begins with a bright eleven-year-old boy, Mark Sway and his younger brother
Ricky, who is eight, are going into the woods near the Tucker Wheel Estates,
a mobile home park where they live with their mother, Dianne.
While they are in the woods, a shiny black 4-door Lincoln (a black
1993 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham in the film) arrives, and soon W. Jerome
"Romey" Clifford, a 44-year-old lawyer from New Orleans, Louisiana, gets out
of the car. His only client at the moment is Barry "The Blade" Muldanno, and
now here in the woods of northeast Memphis, Tennessee, he is attempting to
commit suicide. Mark and Ricky Sway sit hidden from Clifford and watch him
from behind the shiny black car. Clifford, noticeably drunk, puts one end of
a garden hose in the exhaust pipe of the car and the other end into a rear
passenger window, and rolls up the window, trying to kill himself with carbon
monoxide poisoning. Mark, sneaks up, crawling on his stomach, and pulls the
hose from the exhaust trying to stop him. Clifford gets out of the car, cursing,
and puts the hose back in. Mark repeats pulling the hose from the tailpipe.
On the third attempt, Clifford sees the grass moving in the rear view mirror,
leaps from the car, grabs Mark and pushes him into the car. He then tells Mark
why he wants to kill himself, he is convinced that Muldanno is going to murder
him anyway and wants to die on his own terms.

Clifford is defending Muldanno for the murder of U.S. Senator Boyd
Boyette. But the prosecutors, led by the "Reverend" (for his preaching style in
court) Roy Foltrigg, don't have a body. Muldanno had previously told Clifford
that the he buried the body in concrete in Clifford's detached garage, under
a boat, while Clifford was on vacation, skiing in Colorado. In the car, Clifford
keeps drinking Jack Daniels, and taking dalmane and codeine. After a while, the
effects of the booze and pills start to make Clifford pass out and Mark manages
to escape. After Clifford realizes this and attempts to go after Mark, he looks
around but soon gives up and slides up on the trunk of the car, puts a .38
Special caliber pistol in his mouth, and shoots himself.
Upon witnessing the suicide, Ricky, Mark's younger brother, goes
into shock. Mark calls the police and is later found at the scene. Police and the
FBI discover that Mark was in the car and may have spoken with Jerome
Clifford. Clifford knew where the body was buried and the FBI needs this
information. The FBI is now after Mark because they believe he knows where
the body is. Mark hires a lawyer named Reggie Love (a woman, despite the
name) to help him. Barry Blade's people burn Mark's house. Mark is reluctant
to tell the FBI what he knows because the Mafia has threatened him that if he
tells anyone, they will kill him and his family.
Mark is placed in juvenile lock-up (partly to protect him, partly to make
him talk) but escapes and runs away to New Orleans and decides to look for
the body with Reggie. If the body is not where he knows it should be, he will no
longer be in danger of being killed by the Mafia. He decides to travel to New
Orleans to search for it. They arrive. And while approaching the area of the
corpse, the boy and his lawyer observe some Mafia henchmen trying to
relocate the body. The henchmen see Mark trying to escape from the
boathouse where the body is buried. After a struggle, Mark is able to retrieve
a gun that the men were carrying. One of the henchman is trying to convince
Mark to shoot him, but Reggie is able to convince him that if he does shoot, he

would be just like the henchmen. Mark gives Reggie the gun, which makes the
henchman laugh saying, "You should've never taken the gun, you'll never have
the guts to shoot." To which she replies, "Wanna bet?" and shoots the
neighbor's alarm. The neighbor then comes out with a shotgun and the
henchmen run away. Mark and Reggie hide in the woods until they are sure
the neighbor is back asleep. They then re-approach the corpse and run away
when they see the decaying face of Senator Boyette. Reggie later tells the FBI
where the body is, but only after Mark and his family are entered into the
United States Federal Witness Protection Program. The Sway family retreats to
a revered hospital in Phoenix to tend to Ricky's severe condition and Mark
never sees Reggie again.

Reading Comprehension
The Cape Sable seaside sparrow, a tiny bird that lives only in Florida’s
Everglades and one of the world’s most endangered species, has started to
make a comeback this spring, environmentalists said.
A survey team has spotted at least 6,000 of the sparrows in the
Everglades this spring, up from an estimated 4,000 to 5,000. The increase
followed a decision by flooding control engineers not to inundate a key nesting
ground.
Despite the good news, the Cape Sable seaside sparrow remains on the
endangered list. Since 1981, its numbers have dropped more than 60 percent.
The Everglades is home to at least 14 animal species classified as threatened or
endangered.
Ecologists has argued the best way to save the sparrow was for floodcontrol engineers to stop storing and releasing millions of gallons of water in
farm and residential areas surrounding Everglades National Park.
This year, the fight got as far as Washington before engineers decided
they would not open the gates and flood an important sparrow nesting area.
Environmentalists had warned that flooding this year could lead to the bird’s
extinction. The decision not to open the gates had led to the upturn in the
sparrow’s population. “By doing this, we have allowed the species to recover,”
an ecologist said.
1. Ecologists were worried about the Cape Sable seaside sparrow because
_________.
a. it had moved to other areas
b. its numbers had fallen
c. it had been classified as extinct

$25,000 may sound excessive for a tatty pair of jeans, but the ones in
this picture are not an ordinary pair of Levi’s. They are said to be one of the
two oldest pairs left. They are certainly the most expensive!
Discovered last year in an old coal mine in Colorado, they were initially
sold for $10,000 and then sold on again at a higher price. Then Seth Weisser
paid even more for them. Co-owner of a store appropriately called What
Comes Around Goes Around, he decided to contact Levi’s in San Francisco.
‘I sent them pictures of the jeans and they were delighted. They would have
paid $40,000, I think!’
Levi’s has its own museum and Lynn Downey, the company historian,
said: ‘I knew this would be a treasure that everyone in the company would
want us to have, so Levi’s agreed to pay one of the highest sums ever for a pair
of old jeans.’

Apart from a hole in the left pocket and frayed edges at the bottom, the
jeans are in remarkably good condition for their age. Ms. Downey was able to
date them by their leather patch, which was added in 1886, and the single back
pocket. A second pocket was added in 1902. She said: ‘Perhaps the most
important reason why Levi’s bought these jeans is that the company lost
everything in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the first 50 years of our
history was destroyed.’
Read these statements about the text and say whether they are true or false.
____T___ 1. Lynn Downey is an employee of Levi’s.
____T___ 2. The Levi’s company is more than 100 years old.
____F___ 3. Seth Weisser paid $10,000 for the jeans.
____F___ 4. The jeans are made completely of one material.
____T___ 5. There are no other jeans as old as these.
____T___ 6. The jeans have fewer pockets than ones made after 1902.
____F___ 7. The Levi’s company lost everything from the flood and landslide.
