Sound is the transfer of energy in the form of waves through a substance, or medium, such as
air, water, or a flexible solid. You can picture sound waves as a series of nudges that cause
particles in a medium to bump into one another in successive collisions. Sound can also travel
between different media, which is why you can hear loud music coming from a room with the
door closed.

Knee: Spirit of the Lakota, by Renee Sansom Flood. (Watch it) (Program details and guides)
Dakota Pathways: A Dark Day & People of the Bison
SDPB TV, Saturday, October 31, 4:30am – 5:00am CT (Overnight Schedule – record late Friday
night)
A Dark Day (Massacre at Wounded Knee) - There are dark days in history. Usually they dawn
without a hint of being anything but ordinary…yet end with everybody knowing the day’s events
won’t be forgotten. Sadness and anger, in fact, can remain even after those who actually lived
the dark day are gone. Historians can help…by examining what led to the tragedy, and why
those events hold so much meaning afterwards. A dark day in South Dakota history happened
on December 29, 1890.
People of the Bison - For many lifetimes, the people who spoke the Dakota, Nakota, and Lakota
languages followed great bison herds across the land we now call South Dakota. They used great,
wooly bison skins to keep warm through winter, they ate bison meat and found uses for almost
every part of the animal. (More/ Traditional Uses of Tatanka (buffalo)/ Grade: Elementary-HS)

Ball of Confusion: The 1968 Election
SDPB TV, Sunday. November 1, 3:00pm – 4:00pm CT
Has there ever been a year like 1968? Assassinations, racial unrest, nationwide riots, and an
endless war in Vietnam put the nation on edge and produced a historic three-way presidential
election where all the candidates were deeply flawed. Backed into a corner by rising casualties in
Vietnam and with no easy exit strategy, President Johnson stunned the nation in March 1968
when he announced he would not seek a second full term in the White House. As his efforts to
secure a compromise peace proved futile, LBJ's popularity plummeted further. Even darker hours
came when Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were cut down by assassins' bullets.
