Totalitarianism
• People are forced to do what the government tells them
• prevent from leaving the country
• Seeks to control not only all economic and political
matters but the attitudes,values and beliefs of its
population.
• This is a country with only one political party. ex. Soviet
Union under Stalin, Nazi Germany and the People's
Republic of China.
Regime A system or rule of government
Dictator: a ruler who assumes full and absolute power
What is a monarchy? Ruling by king or queen
By the mid 1930’s dictators had seized control in several
countries- WHY?
• No established form of government or unstable
• Germany is outcast, bitter, poor
• WWI issues not resolved
• Japan and Italy dissatisfied with treaties
• European economies in ruin
• Mass unemployment
• Citizens looking for help
ITALY BENITO MUSSOLINI
1922- Benito Mussolini becomes dictator of Italy’s new fascist,
totalitarian government. Took title “Il Duce” “The Leader”
Fascism- political movement that Mussolini began that is an
extreme form of patriotism and nationalism that is often linked to racism
GERMANY
Hitler was: educated (for time period), believed in Social
Darwinism: Survival of the Fittest, moved to Germany in 1913,
fought in WWI, temporarily blinded. Imprisoned 1923-wrote
Mein Kempf
COMMUNISM Joseph Stalin- took power in 1924, the
government tried to control every aspect of life. Crushed any
form of opposition U.S.S.R- Union of Soviet Socialist
Republics
Japan --Adopted Militarism--Hideki Tojo became Prime
Minister (in charge of War) eventually gained virtual dictatorial
powers
