Celebrate Freedom Week – September 26-30, 2016
Prepare for Constitution Day and Celebrate Freedom Week in September by considering some of
the resources found at http://www.fldoe.org/academics/standards/subject-areas/constitution-daycelebrate-freedom-wee.stml.
Dad’s Take Your Child to School Day is Wednesday, September 28, 2016.
On September 28, 2016, the Florida Department of Education will observe Dads Take Your
Child to School Day statewide. This initiative is a wonderful opportunity for dads or other male
role models to get involved in their child’s education and to highlight the significant difference
they can make by taking a more active role.
To encourage schools to celebrate and participate in Dads Take Your Child to School Day, we
have created a toolkit which can be accessed using the link below.

English Language Arts (ELA) Florida Standard
LAFS.910.W.1.1 Grades 9-10: Writing
Text Types and Purposes
o The Language Arts Florida Standards are comprised of a range of strands, the
basic ones being reading, writing, speaking/listening and language (with additions
depending on grade level).
o The standards in the strands themselves are also grouped into related “clusters.”
In the writing strand, the first cluster is titled Text Types and Purposes. This
cluster sets expectations for student writing of argument, informative/explanatory
and narrative writing. How do we ensure that students are able to master these
text types?
o These text types must be actively taught. This means an examination of purpose
and audience, and a clear understanding of how each text type works.
o “The structures, features and uses for each text type needs to be modeled via
mentor texts and teacher talk-alouds.”
o “Students will need to practice through guided writing tasks, collaborative tasks
and then independently with frequent feedback from peers and teachers.” (From
AEA 267 https://www.aea267.k12.ia.us/english-language-arts/writing/text-typesand-purposes/)

LAFS.910.W.1.1: Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics
or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.
a. Introduce precise claim(s), distinguish the claim(s) from alternate or opposing
claims, and create an organization that establishes clear relationships among
claim(s), counterclaims, reasons and evidence.
b. Develop claim(s) and counterclaims fairly, supplying evidence for each while
pointing out the strengths and limitations of both in a manner that anticipates the
audience’s knowledge level and concerns.

familiarizing them with basic terms; allowing students to practice establishing the
relationship between claims, reasons and evidence; and analyzing an author's use of
argument in a text.

Mathematics Florida Standard
MAFS.912.APR.1.1 Grades 9-12, Algebra: Understand that polynomials form a system
analogous to the integers, namely, they are closed under the operations of addition,
subtraction and multiplication; add, subtract and multiply polynomials.
For students to be successful in Algebra I, they must have a strong foundational
understanding of number sense. This month, MAFS.912.A-APR.1.1 will be highlighted.
To show mastery of this standard, students will relate the addition, subtraction and
multiplication of integers to the addition, subtraction and multiplication of polynomials
with integral coefficients through application of the distributive property. Students will
apply their understanding of closure to adding, subtracting and multiplying polynomials
with integral coefficients. Students will add, subtract and multiply polynomials with
integral coefficients.
