There are lots of activities you can do to reinforce the concept of place value.
•
Place Value--Teacher directed lesson variation #1
Direct students to place
0 in the ten's place
2 in the ten thousand's place
8 in the one's place
7 in the thousand's place
6 in the hundred thousand's place
4 in the hundred's place
Have the class read aloud the number shown—627,408
When finished, have students replace the numeral cards in order from 0-9 again on their desks.
Repeat the activity as needed giving other numeral patterns.

Ask
What is the value of the 9? (900)
What is the value of the 2? (2,000)
What is the value of the 8? (80)
What is the value of the 5? (500,000)
What is the value of the 7? (70,000)
Repeat as needed with other numeral placements.

Odd or Even? Teacher directed lesson questions
*Is the numeral in the _____place ODD or EVEN?
*Is the entire number ODD or EVEN (based on the one's place numeral)
* Is the 8 worth 80 or 8,000?

Partner practice
Students work in pairs. Partner A gives directions to Partner B as to which numeral goes in
which place value position. Partner B must read the number correctly to Partner A. Alternate
turns
•
Expanded numbers
Give students an expanded number and have them place numeral cards to show the
corresponding standard number.
“Use your numeral cards to make the standard number that is equal to 8,000 + 500 + 70 + 6.”
Students form 8,576
STORAGE TIP: When the math session is over, give each student an envelope and a paper clip.
Numeral cards are stored in the envelope and clipped to the Place Value Activity Sheet until the next
lesson. Don't lick the envelopes!
