MI Report Card & the August Measurement of the Month
E-mail
Website
Our state government needs a comprehensive, objective way to
measure the outcomes of state government and enable residents to
hold their leaders accountable. That’s why House Democrats created
www.MIReportCard.com. We’re calling on the Governor to take his
dashboard to the next level and join us in a bi-partisan effort to
measure state government’s progress.
So, what do you think is most important to Michigan’s future? Visit
www.MIReportCard.com to learn more and let me know which areas
are important to you in evaluating our state’s progress. I encourage
you to visit the site and tell me what you think. You can also stay up
to date by “following” or “liking” MI Report Card on popular social
networking websites.
August Measure of the Month
Each month the MI Report Card website will feature a Measurement
of the Month. August’s Measurement of the Month focuses on the
biggest issue for Michigan today… JOBS. Our citizens have been
focused on job growth from the beginning of this term and now that
over seven months have passed it’s time to assess how far we’ve
come with job growth.
Michigan Unemployment Rate: April (2011) 10.2 percent, May (2011)
10.3 percent, June (2011) 10.5 percent and July (2011) 10.9 percent
Unfortunately, we’re moving backwards.
While the Governor and legislative leaders are busy slashing
budgets in Lansing, local governments and schools are picking up
the pieces. To be clear, Republican cuts mean less police officers,
teachers and firefighters and less dollars in our local economy.
Also, there is no proof that Republican policies are helping private
sector job growth. Eliminating credits for brownfield and historic
preservation projects is stifling needed investments in our cities.
Completely eliminating the film credits has destroyed a budding
industry and removing credits for battery manufacturing has halted
our momentum towards building the cars of the future. In general,
completely rewriting the business tax code, again, has left many
wondering when the roller coaster will stop.
This is not a recipe for job growth and economic prosperity.
The Governor has even been quoted as saying, “next year my main
issue is let’s start the job creation process” Next year? It is clear we
need jobs NOW!
August Coffee Hour
Please join me at my upcoming coffee hour to share your ideas and
concerns. I host these monthly meetings to meet with residents,
give updates on state government, and share ideas for Michigan’s
future.
My next coffee hour is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on
Saturday, Aug. 27, at Barry’s Bagels, 2515 Jackson Ave. in Ann
Arbor. I hope to see you there.
Please feel free to contact me at (517) 373-2577 or
[email protected] with your questions, concerns and input.
Sincerely,
State Representative Jeff Irwin
53rd House District
