St Edward’s Catholic Primary School Spring Term 1 Curriculum Newsletter – Year 6 A message from Mr Tunn… Welcome back! Firstly, thank you so much for all the very thoughtful cards and presents that I received for Christmas. Your kindness was much appreciated. I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas full of food, love and laughter. Our topic for the first half of Spring is based on the film, ‘Apollo 13’. Our learning will be themed around the exploration of Space and also learning about the Earth and our solar system. As always, please do come and see me if you have anything you wish to discuss or I can help in any way. RE – Spring • Sources: Learning about the origins of the books and stories in the Bible. • Unity: Exploring how the Eucharist enables and challenges the Christian family to live and grow together. Working on national requirements. • Planning and editing texts. • Weekly reciprocal reading. • Daily spelling and handwriting. • Non Fiction: Newspaper writing. • Fiction: Narrative writing. Creative Curriculum – Earth and the Solar System • How do scientists believe the solar system was formed? • What does our solar system consist of? • How do the Earth and other planets move around the Sun? • What causes day and night? • Why does the Moon appear different? • How can I use marbling techniques to create a piece of art based on the solar system? Maths • Division: Mental strategies, formal written method and applying skills to solve problems. • Weekly target work based on class areas for development. • Weekly mental maths. • Decimals: Linked to all four operations and using this to solve problems. • Fractions: comparing, ordering, equivalent, mixed and improper, links to decimals, adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing. Homework and how to help your child at home… • Learning Log: This will come home weekly on Friday and is due in the following Thursday. Inside the Learning Log there is a sheet that will indicate what homework has been set for the week. Please sign the sheet once it has been completed. • I would expect the children to read at home at least three times per week. Please ask your children a range of questions about the book to ensure they have fully understood it. For example, questions where they can find the answer (eg. Where did X go after they had been shopping?) and also questions that require the children to form their own opinions (eg. Who was your favourite character and why?) Children can change their reading books every day. • Spellings will continue to be tested every Friday. • Please continue to use Mathletics to support the children’s learning in Maths.
