Product Design: A Case for a Camping First-Aid Kit
Design Brief
Design and model a case for a camping first-aid kit. The kit should hold the necessities of first aid for the person going into the woods for a weekend
camping trip - items such as band-aids, antiseptic cream, and others as you determine. While this is not intended to be for backpackers, the case should not
be too large, with maximum dimensions of 8” x 6” x 2”, although it may be smaller. The case will be made from plastic and injection-molded.
Your design should prevent some items from sliding around inside, such as anything in a glass container or objects that could get squeezed by other items.
The case should have a handle.
Identify Stakeholders
Identify the major stakeholders in the design and briefly explain what would satisfy each one.
Some of these are started for you.

Investigation & Research
In this step you should try to find the answers to questions that will help you in your design work.
1.
List the items below that you might want to include in the first aid kit (you can eliminate some later if needed).

2.
Look at other plastic cases to get an idea how they are designed, how they hinge, how they close, etc. Make any sketches that will help
you remember design details of the cases you review. Notice how most plastic cases have round edges. Many also have indentations and
bumps for strength – the case can be made thinner and still be fairly rigid.

3.
Make a rough sketch of each item with its overall dimensions. This is necessary so you can plan the overall size of the case. Make a fullsize paper template of each item and cut it out. That would make it much easier to get an idea of how large the case must be and what
items might fit where.

Initial Design Ideas
Sketch at least six initial ideas for the first aid case.

Refine Your Design Idea
Select one of the designs on the previous page and explain why you have chosen that design. You might want to use terms that describe how it
looks, how the handle is constructed, how handy it would be to use, how complete the kit is that the case can hold, etc.
On this page and the following page, you will refine your idea. Using the design you have chosen, experiment (by sketching variations) with
changing proportions until you come up with the best proportions you can.

Finalize Your Design
On this page sketch out the final design you have developed, including any dimensions you want to remember, such as cavities to fit items or dividers you
have included. The sketch can be rough because the Pro/DESKTOP program will help you to present your ideas as high quality renderings. You will refer to
this page while designing in Pro/DESKTOP.

Present Your Design
On this page paste the printouts of the final Pro/DESKTOP design, or include them on separate pages. Include isometric or trimetric, top, side, and front views
of the 3D design. You may also want to present orthographic views from the Drawing part of Pro/DESKTOP to show any interior details.

Evaluate Your Design
Write an evaluation of your design. You should briefly discuss the strengths of your design and its weaknesses. You should address things like: how it looks,
how well it seems to work, how well the items fit in the design and any other factors that are important for a camping first aid kit case design. Make sure
you refer to the Stakeholders you identified in the beginning of the project.
