Books and the Renaissance: Archival
Collections in Ninth-Grade History
Instructors: Marcelle Doheny, Instructor in
History and Social Science, and Paige Roberts,
Director, Archives and Special Collections
Location: Oliver Wendell Holmes Library,
McLean Gallery, 2nd floor
The revival of classical learning in 15th-century
Europe centered around the rediscovery of old
texts. Books in our archives help students see
for themselves how texts and their production
changed European ways of thinking.
9:15–10 a.m. and 10:15–11 a.m.
The following optional demonstration classes
are offered at both times (except Birdwalk).
Mindfulness at Andover
Instructor: Andy Housiaux, Instructor and
Chair, Philosophy and Religious Studies
Location: Lower Level of Cochran Chapel
In recent years, mindfulness has become much
more mainstream and has been introduced in
hospital settings, therapeutic contexts, and,
increasingly, schools. What is mindfulness? How
is it being introduced into the lives of Andover
students?
Physics Class:
Simple Harmonic Motion
Instructor: Carolina Artacho Guerra, Instructor
in Physics
Location: Gelb Science Center, Room 211
Birdwalk: Introduction to Ornithology
Instructors: Tom Cone and Samantha Hagler ’16
Offered at 9:15 a.m. only; ends at 11 a.m.
Location: Meet in Gelb Science Center, Room 103
Please join us on a bird walk through PA’s
diverse campus, including a visit to Rabbit Pond
and Andover’s Bird Blind. In case of rain, we
will view the Greene-Smith Bird Collection and
the biology department’s collection of local bird
nests. Please bring your own binoculars if you
have them.
Reflections on the Voyage
of the HMS Beagle
Instructor: Marc Koolen, Instructor in Biology
Location: Gelb Science Center, Room 102
the flame of hydrogen gas burning, and the
“stink” of a decomposition reaction.
Confessions of an Early Modern Virago
Instructor: Eugene Hughes, Instructor and
Chair, French
Location: Samuel Phillips Hall, Room 216
When one speaks of the Renaissance, images
of civil war and sectarian hatred rarely come
to mind. Yet this is exactly what marred much
of the last half of France’s “Renaissance”
century. This discussion will attempt to better
understand Renaissance France’s darker, more
turbulent side.
The Peabody Museum and the White
Earth Band of Minnesota Chippewa
Instructor: Ryan Wheeler, Director,
Robert S. Peabody Museum of Archaeology
Location: Robert S. Peabody Museum
of Archaeology
Learn about the Peabody Museum’s emerging
relationship with the White Earth Band of
Minnesota Chippewa, inaugurated with the
repatriation of a sacred birch bark scroll this
year. Director Ryan Wheeler will share the story
of the sacred scroll, how it came to Andover,
and some of the elaborately beaded ceremonial
regalia from White Earth held by the museum.
Tour the Exhibition Revolution of
the Eye: Modern Art and the Birth
of American Television
Instructor: Jamie Kaplowitz, Manager of
Curriculum Initiatives
Location: Addison Gallery of American Art
Come do some science! You will replicate the
efforts of a typical PA physics student taking part
in Ms. Artacho’s class on any given day. Physicsphobes welcome and encouraged to attend!
Charles Darwin, his voyage aboard the HMS
Beagle, and his famous visit to the Galapagos
Islands are taught in virtually every introductory
biology course. Come hear the story of the three
main players in this saga, take a tour of a scale
model of the Beagle, and view Darwin’s quarters
during the five-year voyage.
Art History Class
Instructor: David Fox, Instructor in Art History
Location: Kemper Auditorium
Reading Poetry Through the Image
Instructor: Paul Tortorella, Instructor in English
Location: Bulfinch Hall, Tirana Room
Examine the way avant-garde art shaped the
look and content of American television in its
formative years (1940s–1970s) and learn the
ways in which Phillips Academy classes have been
connecting this exhibition to their course topics.
During our time together, we will replicate a
“typical” class period and see and discuss several
works of American and/or European art.
What is the subject of Walt Whitman’s “When I
Heard the Learned Astronomer?” By focusing on
images in the poem, we can better understand
how this short and popular work is a call for a
new American poetry.
Explaining Concepts Visually:
Photography in the Addison Gallery
Instructor: Rebecca Hayes, Curator of Education
Location: Addison Gallery of American Art
Light My Fire:
Experiments Students Really Like
Instructor: David Stern, Instructor in Chemistry
Location: Gelb Science Center, Room 313

with artwork in this innovative space.
Spanish 200
