Where can one find evidence that the Egyptians and Kushite people had close relationships? Pictures on the walls of some Egyptian tombs and temples. Hatshepsut has pictures of people with darker skin and curly hair. 2. Describe the scenes in Hatshepsut’s tomb. What do these images tell us about the relationship between Egypt and Kush? Shows Nubians either bearing gifts or holding bows and arrows. So, they were either paying homage to the Egyptians in charge, or they were at war with them. 3. What is another name for Kush? How did these people get this name? Kush is Nubia. They had a lot of gold, so the Egyptians called them this because of their word for gold: Nub. 4. What goods were exchanged between Egypt and Nubia? What did the Egyptians acquire from Nubia? What did the Nubians acquire from the Egyptians? Egypt sent grains, papyrus and linen to Nubia in exchange for other goods like: gold, slaves, ivory, leather, and timber. 5. During what time period did the Egyptians have power over Nubia? What did the Nubian governor have to do for the Egyptians? Egypt had power over the Nubians during the New Kingdom (1600 – 1100 BCE). 6. What specific changes happened in Nubia that showed the influence the Egyptians had on them as a civilization? Nubians began to speak and write like Egyptians. Their archers fought in the Egyptian army. They wore Egyptian-style clothing and even sent some of their nobles to Egypt in order to get a better education. 7. Why did Egypt become weak after the collapse of the New Kingdom? There was political chaos. At least 10 Egyptian pharaohs fought each other for power and this constant fighting made Egypt weak and unstable 8. What major event occurred in 730 BCE? Kushite armies invaded Egypt and the kings in northern Egypt surrendered to Piye 9. What dynasty did the Nubian King Piye start? Describe the size of the Nubian Empire under his rule. King Piye started the 25th dynasty. Under his rule (“Uniter of the Two Lands”) the Nubian kingdom was from Meroe to the Mediterranean. 10. What major construction site is seen as an example of how closely connected the Nubians and Egyptians were? The temple at Jebel Barkal. Modeled after the temple built by the pharaoh Ramses II at Abu Simbel. 11. In what year did the last of the Nubian kings leave Egypt? Who was responsible for this departure? Nubia kings leave Egypt around the mid- 650’s BCE. They were forced out by the invading Assyrians (but could not because of their advanced iron weaponry). 12. What major event occurred in 590 BCE? How did the Nubians react to this event? Egypt invaded Kush and destroyed the capital at Napata. After this, the Nubians decided to move their capital to safety further south to Meroe. 13. Explain how the city of Meroe became a trading center. Traders used the Nile, the Red Sea and other routes to move their goods. The Nubians were exposed to many foreign peoples; Arabia, India and even China 14. Explain how the Nubians were more modern in the views towards women. The Nubians had female leaders. At times they were ruled by kandakes, or queen mothers. They would sometimes co-rule with their sons or husbands.
