@KCJSWimbledon B JUNIOR VIEWS NEWSLETTER r i t i s h M FRIDAY 12 May 2017 #358 u s e u m The Transition boys enjoyed their day at the British Museum on Monday. The boys saw various artefacts and bodies from Ancient Egypt, learning about the beliefs and customs and the materials that were available at the time. Of course there is always time for a shop visit! We walked to the park from school and as soon as we entered the park, we could already see beautiful and brightly coloured flowers. We had an activity sheet with tasks on it. Task A was looking for signs of spring and we went round the park looking for things to tick off on our sheet. There were two sections, one on animals and the other on nature, and we had to look out for the things in each section. We could also think of other signs of spring and add it to the sheet. Task B was looking at two different flowers and answering questions about them such as the colour of the flower and how many stamens it had. We then got a bluebell and a rhododendron. After we answered the questions, we sat in a nice spot and stuck the parts of the bluebell onto the sheet. Task C was a game that Mr Baron kindly set up called ‘Survival Of The Fittest’. Some people had a cut-out flower around their neck and the remaining boys had to act like bees. Some boys had a brown flower and others had brightly coloured ones. The bees had to decide whether they would go for the bright flowers or the other flowers. Some boys had a Starburst that represented nectar and we had to see which bees would go for the Starburst (nectar). We did the same with perfume. Then we had to see how long a bee would stay on a flower. We did this ten times. This activity took place where there were lots of bright flowers. Everyone enjoyed this activity because at the end we all got a Starburst! Task D was to look at a picture of a family and see how they used plants in their house e.g. for flower decoration, broccoli as food. Then we had to think of how we would use plants in our homes. By then it was lunchtime and we all sat in the park to eat. Overall, the experience was amazing! Veer 1M DIY Fidget Spinner On Friday after school I was lucky enough to visit my dad’s work and used the 3D printer to make a fidget spinner. The whole process took six hours! I took ball bearings out of old skateboard wheels and hammered them in. It spins a bit slower than the official spinners but it still works. Anton 2R Junior Forum The Junior Forum met on Monday and welcomed Mr Morris and Mr Weber to the meeting and we had an interesting discussion on Distinctions. The new reward system is working well. 116 boys in Priory have been awarded their bronze badge, 44 their silver and 11 boys have already achieved their gold award. Well done boys. Further details of the meeting will be available soon. A Sensational Week! Sen (1C) and Wilfred (1H) travelled all the way to Oldham at the weekend to represent Richmond in the U11 National Chess Finals. Sen won 2 out of his 3 matches, whilst Wilfred won all of his matches. These performances helped Richmond to the overall trophy, meaning that they are the U11 National Champions! Sen also won the Elmbridge medal of honour award for his bravery during a disturbance at their home. Westside Story Last weekend, a group of Lower Remove boys finished off an impressive season for Westside FC U12s by winning the match which guaranteed their promotion to the next division, beating the team who were competing against them for the final promotion place. Most of the boys have been playing for the Westside team for 3 years now, some of them training together before that since Kindergarten at Squirrels and the team truly is a King’s affair. Fifteen of the squad of 17 boys are from KCJS, the other two having been at Squirrels before moving to St Paul’s Juniors and Shrewsbury House. The two coaches are King’s parents, as are the “backroom staff” organising the fixtures and logistics. The Westside team competes in the Surrey Youth League. They played 22 matches this season, winning 16 of those and losing only 3, fewer than any other team in the division. Along the way they scored 95 goals, averaging more than 4 a match and conceded only 25, again the least of any team in the division. They are all looking forward to getting the new season under way in a few months’ time, relishing the challenges of a higher division, plus moving to 11-aside on bigger pitches with bigger goals! Westside U12 team: Felix, Sam, Leo, Kit, Sinan, Aathi, Seb, Kingsley, Archie,Yusuf (St Paul’s), Olli, John, Max (SHS), Will, Matty, Aidan, Tyler. Coaches: Dave Yates, Paul Fontes. Adam Belton Art Of the Week S e r k a n 3 RA F r o m t h e P a v i l i o n Our week in sport was dominated by the school’s tennis teams being in action with the U12s and U13s competing in the Surrey Tennis League. The former were incredibly unlucky on the grass at St George’s in Weybridge, shaded out 5-4 in sets under glorious sunshine. The very next day over at St John’s, this time King’s were the victors by the same score line showing that they had learnt from the defeat the day before. A reflective approach to sport is something we are trying to instil with all the boys here, and this will help them self-evaluate and ultimately correct themselves if mistakes are made. The U13s were ‘humbly dominant’ in their two fixtures against Trinity and Feltonfleet, rolling out 6-3 and 9-0 wins respectively, the latter demonstrating great technique across all three pairings. With RGS Guildford and, hopefully, Whitgift on the horizon, there is much to be excited about! At the start of the week in a friendly fixture versus Danes Hill, the U10s and U11s were also comfortable in both singles and doubles at Kingsway, and again the boys played, umpired, and won with great humility – a trait we are keen to continue at the school. House Cricket was the theme of the week out in the middle; a chance for all boys to represent their House and show an almost tribal loyalty in fair and fierce competition. Having umpired in the U10 tournament I can report from first-hand experience that the format has made for some incredibly close finishes reminiscent of the Twenty20! We are constantly thinking about ways in which we can increase participation and excitement for all in a sport where fundamentally there can be 2-3 boys involved at any one time. Limited time matches give everyone an opportunity to compete in a fast-paced match and, more often than not, give the audience a frantic finish of a certain amount of runs from very few balls. The U9A-E teams played Shrewsbury House at home on Thursday morning and, whilst we won all 5 matches, what was most pleasing was the style of cricket played – both attacking and adventurous! I know that Mr Cheers has been mightily impressed with the efforts by all boys in that year group and there have been lots of conversations about selection for next time out. Mr Scott managed to find some much needed cricket for the U12s with two teams producing fine performances against CLFS. This is a year group with some great cricketing pedigree and the future is very bright for them all. I thank all those that have attended any of our sporting events and look forward to seeing many of you tomorrow at King’s House for some U11 cricket. Word of the week: embolalia – um, this is like, err, you know, like when there are meaningless filler words and sounds in speech. From the Greek ÷mballw (= I throw in) and lalia (= talk, chat). “Johnny, your embolalia is really getting on my nerves. Just say what you mean without adding in a ‘like’ every other word.” Name : House : Form : Monthly Maths Challenge - May Open to all year groups CRICKET SEASON! Harry, Larry and Barry were the top three batsmen for their team in the cricket match this week. Harry scored 8 more runs than Barry. Larry scored 5 more runs than Harry. Altogether they made 72 runs. How many runs did they each make? Harry ____ Larry ____ Barry____ Post your solution in the box in P5 for the chance to win a prize! Every good attempt will receive a Distinction. Deadline: Monday 29 May 2017 15 – 19 May Every day next from Monday (15 May) to Friday (19 May), your Form Teacher will ask how you got to school that morning. It’s a ‘hands-up’ survey and the aim is to encourage you to: use environmentally friendly modes of transport (where possible), and consider the health benefits of walking, scooting or cycling to school. We fully appreciate that a large number of you cannot walk or cycle to school. Maybe you live too far away or are too young to walk alone? Don’t worry; practically every form of transport will get you some points! Car Motorbike Car share (brothers & sisters count) If possible, try to use forms of transport down the list!
