Faculty Senate Representation for Part-Time Faculty Members at Marywood University According to AAUP’s Background Facts on Contingent Faculty (http://www.aaup.org/issues/contingency/background-facts): Shared governance responsibilities should be shared among all faculty, including those appointed to part-time positions. >Curricular and other academic decisions benefit from the participation of all faculty, especially those who teach core courses. >Faculty and administrators should together determine the appropriate modes and levels of participation in governance for part-time faculty, considering issues such as voting rights, representation, and inclusion in committees and governance bodies The AAUP page also points out that “Today more than 50 percent of all faculty hold part-time appointments.” The Marywood University Fact Book 2014-2015 notes on page 30 that there are 163 full-time and 256 part-time faculty members at the University. This means that 61% of the faculty at Marywood is parttime. While the AAUP encourages the participation in governance by part-time faculty members, it recommends that the details be handled on a case-by-case basis. Examples of part-time faculty inclusion: College of Southern Nevada Contingent Faculty – Teaching faculty who are appointed for less than full-time (1.0 FTE) or hired on single year contracts—including but not limited to individuals serving in positions commonly referred to as emergency, temporary, in-residence, visiting, adjunct or part-time faculty. 5.2.5 Contingent Faculty shall be represented by two Senators. 5.3.5 Senators representing contingent faculty must be contingent faculty under contract with the College during the semester they serve. Service as a contingent faculty Senator is completely voluntary service to the College. No compensation or release shall be provided. Service as a contingent faculty Senator does not create an expectation of future employment at CSN beyond the terms of his/her existing contract. 5.4.6 Senators representing Contingent Faculty shall be elected by the Senate membership at the initial Senate meeting of each semester. Service as a contingent faculty Senator is completely voluntary service to the College. No compensation or release shall be provided. Service as a contingent faculty Senator does not create an expectation of future employment at CSN beyond the terms of his/her existing contract. 5.5 Term of Offices Each Senator except those representing contingent faculty shall serve a two-year term commencing at the first Senate meeting of the academic year; Senators may serve an unlimited number of consecutive terms. The Senator representing contingent faculty shall serve a term of one Fall or Spring semester, but they may be reappointed for a total of four consecutive semesters and an unlimited numbers of nonconsecutive semesters. The officers of the Senate shall consist of a Chair, Chair-Elect and Past Chair. All officers must be fulltime academic faculty. James Madison University Motion to Create a Non-Voting Representative Seat for Part-Time Faculty It is proposed that the following Section be added to the Faculty Senate By-laws: [Article II: Membership] Section 12. In order to advise the Senate of the concerns of the part-time and adjunct faculty of the University, a non-voting member of the Senate shall represent the interests of the part-time and adjunct faculty. The representative, who may be full-time, part-time, or adjunct faculty, shall be elected by the part-time and adjunct faculty in an election administered by the Executive Director of the Center for Faculty Innovation, or appointed by the Executive Director of the Center for Faculty Innovation, for a one-year term, renewable up to a maximum of six terms, to represent the interests of the part-time and adjunct faculty. Penn State York Part-time faculty members teaching credit courses shall elect representatives from their ranks as Senate members. The total number of these representatives shall not exceed 10% of the full-time faculty Senators. The election shall be held each fall semester under the supervision of the Senate Chair and in consultation with the ADAA (Assistant Director of Academic Affairs). Should a vacancy occur among the part-time faculty Senators, it will be filled by the candidate with the next highest vote total. University of Akron The part-time faculty shall elect two representatives from their membership. Part-time faculty committee. (a) Gathers information about matters of concern to part-time faculty. (b) Proposes policies concerning part-time faculty. University of Hartford 11.d. The Faculty Affairs Committee will promote the general professional development of both the fulltime faculty and part-time and adjunct faculty (those hired under F3, G3 and F4 contracts). The committee will: > promote excellence in classroom teaching and professional creativity. >address the concerns of part-time and adjunct faculty. >consider changes in the Faculty Policy Manual (FPM). >consider changes to the Constitution and Bylaws of the Faculty Senate. >serve as a liaison to the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). University of New Mexico—Gallup Branch All full-time faculty members have voting privileges. Part-time faculty shall be represented by four (4) of their number elected by them; these shall have voting privileges. University of Southern Maine Part time faculty shall elect two members to the Faculty Senate with full senate participation rights.
