Review the course offerings for each session time and choose one. 8:30-9:00 a.m. (CHECK IN AND CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST) 9:00-10:30 a.m. (SESSION I) From Script to Syndication: A Step-by-Step Look at Producing a 30-Minute Comedy - (S11) Do you ever wonder how groups of writers work together to create a single episode of your favorite show? In this session, we will take a closer look at how a script becomes an episode, what goes on in the infamous “Writers Room,” how producers navigate censorship, and the logistics of on-set production for a multi-camera show. Tara Stillions Whitehead will draw upon her experience working with the producers and writers of The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men. Instructor: Tara Stillions Whitehead, HACC English Faculty Sustainability 101 – Your Ecological Footprint: What is it and Why does it Matter? - (S12) People, particularly in developed countries, are using natural resources at a rate much greater than they can be replenished. This unsustainable activity is negatively impacting the environment, which provides critically important services to promote human well-being. In this session, we examine how individual choices regarding transportation, energy, food, housing and purchasing impact the environment. Participants will have the opportunity to calculate their ecological footprint and determine how various lifestyle changes can reduce their ecological footprint. In 2014, 12.7 million US consumers had $16 billion stolen by fraudsters. This session will provide steps you can take now to protect your identity from fraudsters, hackers, scammers, and phishers so that you can safely surf, shop, and bank on-line. If you are a retiree, you surely do. But let's travel back yet another fifty years to those days of the "Great War" that our grandparents experienced almost 100 years ago. Learn how the events "over there" impacted Gettysburg, its residents, and changed our town. We will visit and look at free sites like iTunesU, Academic Earth, TED Talks, StumbleUpon, The Smithsonian Institution, TripAdvisor, GoodReads, IMDB, and much more. Instructor: Josh Rumpff, HACC Coordinator, Instructional Design 10:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. (SESSION II) Beyond the Red Carpet: An Inside Look at Film and Television Production – (S21) Life today has been intensely shaped by the televisual, and probably the most significant vehicle of communication is visual storytelling in the form of film and television. The stories and characters of our favorite shows have deep roots in how we view ourselves and the world; the narratives provide escape from monotony, critiques of societal flaws, and visions of mankind’s potential or doom. All said, movies and television are closely tied to our identity. So if that is the case, why don’t we know more about how they are made? In this informative session, we will explore some of the lesser known aspects of film conception, selection, production, and distribution, and the role of the industry in choosing what we see or don’t see. Instructor: Tara Stillions Whitehead, HACC English Faculty Sustainability 102 – Ecological Footprint Reduction: Lessons from a Local Community – (S22) Since 1997, residents of the Hundredfold Farm cohousing community have been learning together as they explore and experience the practicalities of living sustainably. During this session, we will discuss how residents of this awardwinning community have integrated sustainable practices into their homes and daily lives. Discover how the choices they made when developing and building their community have reduced their ecological footprint and improved their quality of life. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on how they may incorporate sustainable technologies and practices in their own homes and lives to reduce their impact on the environment. So many interesting stories about places in and around town you just might not know about. You could spend all day exploring sites in and around Gettysburg and none of it would be about the battle! Founded in 1997, Hundredfold was established as a model of sustainable development. A short bus ride from the HACC-Gettysburg campus will provide you with the opportunity to tour the Hundredfold community, which includes 10 solar homes and an innovative artificial wetland used for waste water treatment. Meet and interact with residents who have committed to building an environmentally and socially sustainable community. Additional information can be found at www.hundredfoldfarm.org. This tour will include walking and standing on uneven ground.
