Shared Reading
Read a Rhyme
read a rhyme text
• Read aloud “A Bushel of Wheat” from page 7 of the Green Gorillas Rhyme, Song, and
Play Book or use the pdf (Resources/Magenta genre) online and model fluent reading by
emphasizing the phrases that go together. Have students practice reading these phrases with
you. Help students notice the flow of the phrases “a bushel of wheat,” “a bushel of corn,”
and so on. Read the rhyme together several times.
• Say the words corn and born. Ask students what they notice about
the two words. Together, brainstorm a list of words that rhyme with
these words.
• Ask students what they think the word bushel means. Discuss the clues
that are in the title.
– Do you think a bushel is a little bit of corn or a lot of corn?
Use gestures and body
language to emphasize and
demonstrate the meanings
of words for ELL students.

TEACH
• Read Zolar and Zina in the Pool aloud for the students, using the online text
projected onto a screen. Model fluent reading and point to the words as you read.
• Pause after each sentence, using the period at the end of the sentence as a guide. Explain
that the period helps them to know where to pause when they are reading.
– When do I stop reading on each page?
Discuss the function of the period.
• Lead students in choral-reading the text. Remind them to pause after each period, as you do.
• Reread the text, this time lowering the volume of your voice to allow students to lead
the reading.
APPLY
Invite students to read the text in pairs, with one student reading the first part of the
book and the other reading the second half. Circulate to see how students are pausing
after each sentence.
