4 Read Aloud Shared Reading Read a Rhyme read a rhyme text • Read aloud “A Bushel of Wheat” from page 7 of the Green Gorillas Rhyme, Song, and Play Book or use the pdf (Resources/Magenta genre) online and model fluent reading by emphasizing the phrases that go together. Have students practice reading these phrases with you. Help students notice the flow of the phrases “a bushel of wheat,” “a bushel of corn,” and so on. Read the rhyme together several times. • Say the words corn and born. Ask students what they notice about the two words. Together, brainstorm a list of words that rhyme with these words. • Ask students what they think the word bushel means. Discuss the clues that are in the title. – Do you think a bushel is a little bit of corn or a lot of corn? Use gestures and body language to emphasize and demonstrate the meanings of words for ELL students. Fluency Reread Zolar and Zina in the Pool choral-read a text 142 TEACH • Read Zolar and Zina in the Pool aloud for the students, using the online text projected onto a screen. Model fluent reading and point to the words as you read. • Pause after each sentence, using the period at the end of the sentence as a guide. Explain that the period helps them to know where to pause when they are reading. – When do I stop reading on each page? Discuss the function of the period. • Lead students in choral-reading the text. Remind them to pause after each period, as you do. • Reread the text, this time lowering the volume of your voice to allow students to lead the reading. APPLY Invite students to read the text in pairs, with one student reading the first part of the book and the other reading the second half.
