It’s foundation time! The groundwork for the Fifth and
Columbia project has been laid and now it’s time for the
concrete foundation to be poured. Over the weekend
we’ll have more than 2,000 trucks hauling in the cement.
To celebrate this milestone, we’re having a casual picnic
buffet in the Heritage Room where you’ll have a birdseye view as the foundation for our future settles in.
The open house style of the event allows you to bring
friends and drop in as your schedule allows. Minimum

Tacoma Art Museum Guided Tour
Wednesday, June 24th—July 8th
The time of year has come for us to scrub,
paint, and refresh the Clubhouse. Beginning
Wednesday, June 24 The Rainier Club will be
closed for the House Committee’s annual capital
maintenance and repair. The Club will reopen
for all services on Wednesday, July. During this
time, health club users may show Rainier Club
membership cards at the downtown YMCA
to use their facilities while staff and third party
vendors work on improvement projects.

The Tacoma Art Museum is kicking off its inaugural
exhibition of the Haub Family Collection and you are
invited to join us for a special tour. The featured artwork
spans more than 200 years and examines ideas of American
identity, myths, storytelling, and landscape. This is a
wonderful opportunity to see how concepts of the West
continue to influence us today. Following the tour we will

Join members of the Arts Committee to watch Tim’s
Vermeer, a documentary about how Tim Jenison, the
inventor of Video Toaster, LightWave, and TriCaster,
attempts to solve one of the greatest mysteries in
art. Watch as Tim uncovers how the 17th century
Dutch master, Johannes Vermeer, managed to paint
photo-realistically 150 years before the invention of
photography. Spanning a decade, Tim’s documented
research adventure takes him to Holland, as he tests
his theories and makes some incredible discoveries. Reservations requested;

black-and-white war film that depicts French Resistance-member Paul
Labiche’s battle to save his county’s priceless artwork from German Colonel
Franz von Waldheim. Inspiration for the film came from real-life events.

5:00pm for happy hour at Daniel’s Broiler before heading off to
stroll along the Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop. The loop is a
six mile paved trail that goes around Lake Union, connecting
Gasworks Park and the many other waterfront parks along the
lake. If you’re not much of a “hiker” but would still like to join
us for happy hour, please do. We plan to start the walk by 6:00pm
to enjoy our city’s scenery during daylight hours. Reservations

We’re hitting the streets to explore some of our city’s hidden
outdoor treasures. Many of the parks, plazas and open spaces
we’ll visit offer beautiful landscapes and private art collections
away from the hustle and bustle of our busy city streets.
The tour, which will give you access to many privatelyowned areas, begins at City Centre in the Northwest area
of the lobby and concludes at the Harbor Steps. Featured
sites include One and Two Union Square, Garden of
Remembrance, Freeway Park and Fifth and Madison Condos.
Reservations required; Cost is $20; Limited reservations and
minimum attendance required. Please note: This is a walking
tour. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. Guests
will encounter stairs and hills, but please let the guide know
before the tour if you or another member of your party have
restrictions as accommodations can be made.

how different thinkers address these issues in dramatically different

The Business of
Philanthropy: Creating
a Vibrant Community
On April 29, our Business Leadership Committee
hosted a luncheon and panel discussion: The Business
of Philanthropy: Creating a Vibrant Community.
Beth McCaw, past president of The Rainier Club
served as moderator. Our esteemed panelists included
Jeff Clarke, CEO of Philanthropy Northwest, Tony
Mestres, president and CEO of the Seattle Foundation,
and Paul Shoemaker, executive connector at Social
Venture Partners.
While there was much information to take away, the
highlights are:
• Creating and maintaining a vibrant community
requires active engagement and participation from
the public, private, and philanthropic worlds.
• Building community strength provides an ideal
environment for a vibrant business community.
There remain tremendous partnering opportunities
between the business community and the
philanthropic community.
How do you foster cross-pollination between the two
worlds?
• It may be worth considering a change of labeling
from “not-for-profit” to “for impact.”
• The science of business is applicable to the not-forprofit world; the difference is the mission.
• A general plea for donors to discard an “investor
mentality” when contributing to the not-for-profit
world, a plea for unrestricted gifts. Rather than
looking solely at the level of operational expenses
(overhead) consider whether the not-for-profit
organization possesses the resources necessary to
achieve the goal. Unrestricted gifts to not-for-profit
organizations do not mean a lack of accountability.
• There is an opportunity here: the not-for-profit
world needs to learn how to tell its story better.

James Doane Voted to
the Washington State Bar
Association’s Board of Governors
Rainier Club Board member James Doane has been
voted to the Washington State Bar Association’s Board
of Governors where he’ll oversee District 7 serving
5,400 members in South Seattle. James will begin his
three-year term on October 1 alongside 13 Governors.
The Washington State Bar Association has more than
30,000 active members and an operating budget of $18
million. Congrats, Mr. Doane—a well-deserved honor.
Michael Garvey Receives
Lifetime Achievement Award
On May 7 at the Director of the Year Awards banquet,
Rainier Club member Michael Garvey was awarded
the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Northwest
Chapter of the National Association of Corporate
Directors. The awards honor the most influential
boardroom leaders celebrating those who lead through
innovation, courage, integrity and commitment in the
boardroom. Congratulations, Mr. Garvey.
Ann Ramsay-Jenkins & Tom Skerritt
Honored by ArtsFund
Rainier Club Laureate Tom Skerritt and member Ann
Ramsay-Jenkins were recently honored by ArtsFund
at its 27th Annual Celebration of Arts Luncheon on
May 18. Tom was recognized with the Outstanding
Achievement in the Arts award and Ann received
an award for her Lifetime Dedication to the Arts.
Congratulations to Tom and Ann! The Rainier Club
is proud to have you as leaders in our RC community.

All summer long, Northwest
chamber music lovers hear their
favorite pieces performed in a
most unusual setting—a turnof-the-last-century dairy barn on
the Olympic Peninsula. For 31
years, the Olympic Music Festival
has brought world-class artists to
this pastoral farm where music
meets nature in a magical way. Rainier Club members have a special
invitation to the July 11 concert, which features works by Czerny,
Kodaly, Tellemann, and Mozart. Performing artists are pianist Julio
Elizalde and cellist Dmitri Atapine (both of whom performed at
the Club in March), along with violinist Kristin Lee and flutist
Soouyun Kim. Club members are encouraged to arrive early to
enjoy a picnic lunch on the lawn and stroll around the gardens and
grounds. Seating in the barn is on comfortable church pews and
several rows will be reserved for Rainier Club members. After the
performance, members are invited to a private soiree in the festival
wine cave, where you’ll have the opportunity to meet the musicians.

May Event Recap: A Conversation with Jamie Dimon

Jamie Dimon
Today, I got the chance to hear one of the
recognized icons of modern American banking,
Jamie Dimon, the President and Chief Executive
Officer of JPMorgan Chase. Given that my
knowledge of banking begins and ends with my
debit card, I almost felt guilty taking up a seat
at the event. But, I left that room informed,
inspired and impressed.
Dimon was candid, open and clearly spoke
from the heart. He demonstrated his deep
command of industry knowledge, providing
insights into how financial policy and global
policy are intertwined. His topics included the
government’s role in cyber security, Greece and
the European Union, and the future of virtual
currency. Dimon also shared some smart advice
for those in the room like me, who are nervously
eying our 401K balances during these times
of marketing volatility. His advice: ignore the
undecipherable mysteries of Wall Street and
focus instead on the real world strengths of the
American economy and the American people. I would just like to close by thanking Rainier
Club member Phyllis Cambell, JP Morgan
Chase Chairman for the Pacific Northwest;
Eric Breidenbach and the Business Leadership
Committee. Bringing a speaker of Jamie Dimon’s
stature to The Rainier Club is a real coup, one we
