How Many Dimensions of Wellness???? When we think about health, our thoughts often gravitate toward the physical aspect. In our society, physical health gets most of the attention so it is only natural to focus on the physical. Did you know that there are several other dimensions of health? The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has outlined 8 dimensions of Health. These include; Spiritual, Emotional, Physical, Environmental, Social, Occupational, Intellectual and Financial. This is by no means an ex‐
haustive list but it is a great foundation for considering the various aspects of Health. I think it is safe to say that anything you encounter in life will have an impact on your health. It’s not just about the food we eat and how much exercise we get, while those are both very important, health goes way beyond the physical. Our health is significantly affected by all of the dimensions above and they all hold importance. What is equally as important is finding balance. We must give attention to each area as needed. Placing too much emphasis on one dimension of wellness will take away attention needed for another. So, how do we juggle 8 or more aspects of health on top of daily life? This is an excellent question and one that takes time and consideration to answer. There is no one size fits all answer to this question because the answer will look different from one individual to the next. Finding your answer is a fulfilling process of self‐exploration. This process can seem overwhelming and too large to tackle but it doesn’t have to be. It is important to stay focused and take it one moment at a time and ask for support when needed. Stay tuned for more detailed articles on each dimension of health. Each month will highlight one dimension with pointers on how to approach self‐care and improvement. For individualized support on any of the areas of health, you have the option to work one‐on‐one with an Integrative Health Coach. There are also a number of Wellness groups during drop‐in hours that can help you get started. To make an appointment with your Health Coach, call 612‐752‐8353.
