Obituary, Harold Edward Newton.
The, death occurred at Queenbeyan, N.S.W. on Sunday last of Mr. Harold Edward
Newton, from an illness extending over many years, but which had confined him to
his bed during the past week or two.
The late Mr. Newton, who was in the late 40's, was very well known in the central
western and northern districts before and after the war. He came from N.S.W. to
Albilbah on the Barcoo as a jackeroo, and left there in 1914, when overseer, to enlist. Upon his return in 1919, he secured the management of Armo, for the. Macansh
Estates, and later on went to Toolebuc, Mackinlay for the same company. He was
forced to relinquish his position owing to ill- health and go to Brisbane for special
medical attention.
Recovering some of his old health he secured the management of Camoola Park for
the late John Moffat. After some time there he left and started droving, carrying outseveral big contracts for various owners in these and surrounding districts.
At the completion of the taking of the census, Mr. Newton' secured a position with the
Federal Government on the census staff, which position he occupied till his death.
His friends all had hopes that his residence in the cooler climate of Canberra would
have the beneficial effect so desired on his health, but evidently it was too late..
The late Mr. Newton served throughout the war with the 5th Light Horse, in Egypt
and Palestine, finishing with a Lieutenancy.
He married Kate, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Henderson, Jedburgh, now
residing in Brisbane, by whom he is survived, also by three children the issue of the
marriage.
Prior to coming to Queensland the late Mr. Newton was a member of the A.M.P.
staff, at head office, in Sydney, and had a good grasp of office routine, which was of
material assistance in his job with the census department.
The burial arrangements were at tended to by the Canberra sub-branch
of the R.S.S.R.L.A
