costs as content is managed in multiple
locations and in multiple formats.
These requirements coupled with the
pace of IT innovation, and the push
for open standards to future-proof
network investment, means that
the shift to IP has become a reality.
Indeed, in a number of high profi le
cases, broadcasters are making
large scale building moves, opening
new studios as well as building new
OB trucks having already made the
decision to go all-IP.
Taking Customer Centric Approach
SAM’s IP Routing System offers

they're looking for a hybrid or
full IP solution. SAM’s IP Routing
System is not one size fits all. It’s fully
scalable from small to enterprise
wide operations. Depending on
the broadcaster’s needs, SAM has
everything from standards converters,
switchers and multiviewers to
dedicated IP-only signal processing
products. SAM is working with
a number of broadcasters on
greenfield deployments that are
going all-IP.

SAM's IP Routing System

Over 5 years of design and
development has resulted in a cutting
edge solution that: Is fully scalable
from small to enterprise networks;
Adheres to open IP transports as
targeted by the AIMS alliance;
Retains existing SDI type operational
interfaces and workflows; Is truly
agnostic with respect to COTS
IP switches and media formats;
Integrates with all SAM and third
party Edge devices.
SAM’s IP Routing System also
encompasses SAM’s proven
configuration, control and monitoring
software. Edge devices can
incorporate non-proprietary and
proprietary video signal compression
systems including VC-2 HQ (SMPTE
2042) and Tico (intoPix) respectively.
Compatible SAM IP Edge devices
include switchers, multiviewers, Sirius
SDI routers, standards converters
and multiple video and/or audio
processing products.

of media types, SAM’s IP Routing
System works with any multicast
stream format compliant with SMPTE
2022-6 & 7, TR-03 and TR-04 whilst
additionally including prepared
support for the planned SMPTE 2110
standard. Furthermore, the system
is able to operate seamlessly when
utilizing any of these different stream
‘packetizing’ formats on the same
network system.

that broadcasters undergoing the
transition to IP can future-proof any
investment thereby maximizing their

The diagram below illustrates a
60Hz IP production system of a
kind that could be used in live
production scenarios. However, if the
broadcaster is targeting international
broadcast markets then an important
consideration is how this IP signal can
be delivered – for example into 50Hz
for the worldwide market.
SAM is recognized as the world
leader in motion compensated
video signal conversion. This diagram
illustrates the use of SAM’s IP-enabled
conversion products. In this case,
using SAM’s KudosPro system it's a
straightforward task to take the 60Hz
IP signal and convert it into a 50Hz
world feed in real-time.
With the seemingly insatiable global
appetite for live sports coverage, this
approach means that major global
sporting events could be televised
using IP-enabled production systems
today, thanks to SAM’s IP Routing
System.

A Hybrid IP-SDI Solution
With SAM's IP approach customers can plan their IP-enabled
transition in ways that are uniquely suited to them, their
customers and their businesses.
Many broadcasters are looking to
make the transition to IP in a phased
fashion, at all times keeping a tight
grip on costs and working within the
investment cycles of the business.
As a result users may employ a
hybrid approach where some signal
pathways are 4K IP and others are HD
SDI. SAM’s IP Solution is unique in its
flexibility and resilience – it enables
truly hybrid architectures.
The IP-enabled sQ Server provides live
recording and replay facilities – an
important feature for the compilation
of sports highlight packages, as well
as many other applications. At the
same time, within the IP environment,
SAM’s sQ Transformer provides new
methods for decision making.
This elegant approach required
significant development input from
SAM. Having made that investment in
SAM’s roadmaps, customers can plan
their IP-enabled transition in ways
that are uniquely suited to them, their
customers and their businesses.
The SAM Transformer makes video
streams available via the Cloud
enabling remote based staff to make
live editing decisions or EDL’s.
If your 4K graphics system doesn’t
have IP capabilities – the SDI signal
can be converted to IP using IQ
modular systems and then routed
back to the Kahuna switcher. Direct
access to editing in 4K is provided by
Rio.
SAM’s hybrid IP Solution enables
a complex mix of IP and SDI
video signals to be processed
simultaneously with each and every
data stream supported throughout
the network.

Hybrid IP-SDI Routing System
The diagram above illustrates how 4K
camera feeds can be transmitted as
compressed signals (VC-2 HQ or TICO)
over fiber. The same IP interface connects
to SAM’s Kahuna production
IP-Enabled Products
The SAM IP Routing System offers the most complete, flexible
and cost effective IP routing solution on the market today. SAM’s
pragmatic approach has resulted in a topology equally suited to
pure IP or hybrid IP/SDI systems.
IQ Modular Interface & Processing
SAM’s IP to SDI conversion support
is based on our IQMIX cards which
form the cornerstone of the SAM IP
solution. These cards convert up to
16 simultaneous IP streams to SDI with
embedded audio. The reverse is true
from SDI with embedded audio to IP
transport standards such as SMPTE
2110, including discrete audio, video
and metadata elements.
Other IQ Modular IP products include
dedicated audio solutions such as a
MADI to IP interface card allowing
serial MADI signals to be converted
to AES-67 elemental streams and a
multi-stream audio processing card.
IQ Edge Processing
IQ Edge is a dedicated 3U frame
built with pure IP systems in mind. It
consists of up to two sets of a ‘4-card’
processing solution providing support
for 16 fully redundant SMPTE 2022-7
IP streams (in and out) of 8 signal
processors such as our dual channel
IQUDC31 Up/Down/Cross converter
and single channel IQSYN33 Frame
Synchronizer.
Software Audio Routing & Processing
Audio XS, part of SAM’s xStream
framework of products, provides
multi-stream based audio processing
functions in software such as channel
swapping, audio channel routing up
to 4096x4096 and independent audio
channel delay up to 2 seconds.
KudosPro Conversion
KudosProTM is the next-generation
audio and video (AV) processing
platform from SAM delivering
high quality signal conversion in a
compact, affordable, format-flexible
package. The listed variants include
a 10GbE interface card meaning
that KudosPro Utility, International
or motion series processors can be
a core component of your new IP
system.
High-End Production Switchers
IP interface fins are available for
the full range of Kahuna production
switchers. Installation of the IP fins
is simple and fast – they simply slot
into the mainframe in place of one
or more existing SDI fins. IP enabled
Kahunas offer exactly the same
unbeatable power and capabilities
that Kahuna is renowned for.
