FORTIFY
YOURSELF
WITH
Longevity
WE HAVE DEDICATED
THIS ISSUE TO THE
MANY WAYS IN
WHICH YOU CAN
FORTIFY YOUR HEALTH
AND BUILD YOUR
STRENGTH THIS
COMING SEASON.
THIS IS ONE OF
MY PERSONAL
FAVOURITES:
D
id you know that a simple coldwater technique, practised daily,
can improve your ability to
manage stress? If your nerves
are getting the better of you,
take a deep breath and splash
some cold water over your face.
Studies have shown that you can
trick your body into thinking
it’s fully immersed in cold water.
The instant effect allows you to
use oxygen more efficiently, boosting your mood and relieving
anxiety.
And if you want a greater long-term benefit, you should
take a cold shower or bath daily. While just the thought of this
may leave you stone-cold, it will do wonders for your longevity.
Standing under a cold shower will ensure your blood circulates
more rapidly throughout your body. Dr Joseph Mercola is a great
believer. He says: “Exposing your whole body to cold water for
short periods of time is used to promote ‘hardening’. Hardening
is the exposure to a natural stimulus, such as cold water, that
results in increased tolerance to stress and/or disease.”
Studies have also suggested that drinking cold water, taking
cold showers, as well as other types of cold-water or ice therapy,
may also help to boost your fat-burning abilities. (Managing
your weight is another key factor to enjoying a longer, healthier
life.) The process speeds up your metabolic rate, as your body
must work to raise the temperature of the water, and there are no
adverse side-effects.
And if you think this is some strange modern-day trend,
think again. For 60 years, Thomas Jefferson was known to pour
himself a cold foot bath every morning, in order to maintain his
good health. Hollywood actress Katherine Hepburn lived a full
and very active life, she attributed her good health and vitality to
taking a daily cold shower from a young age.
As long as common sense prevails, cold water in any or many
of these forms can only be good for you.
Finally, we really hope you will enjoy our new design and
layout. It has been a great team effort, but particular thanks go
to our talented designer, Susan, who has interpreted our grand
ideas into the pages of this month’s edition.
Enjoy!

SOME FAMILIAR

NEW VOICES
WHO HAVE
CONTRIBUTED TO
THIS ISSUE
Meet our contributors
Yoga shoot
To help you “fortify yourself for
winter”, we wanted to share some
easy, helpful stretching techniques
that you can do at home to boost
your strength and immunity.
So we asked Casey Chiang,
a qualified ISHTA international
yoga instructor, to show us some
of her favourite techniques at her
studio, ZEN Hot Yoga World. The
pictures are really practical and
easy to follow thanks to Candice
Askham Photography. We also
want to give a shout out to Kyle
Henderson, owner of Liquid Salts
Active Wear, who supplied the
great kit. And when Casey is not
doing yoga, she is exercising her
brain as an advocate.
Cover shoot
For this issue, we chose local
health and beauty inspiration
Melinda Bam. A former Miss
South Africa, Veet ambassador,
TV presenter, entrepreneur and
wife, Melinda sets the bar when
it comes to sharing her health
and beauty secrets.
And to capture the essence
of her warm personality and
natural beauty, we commissioned
renowned photographer Nick
Boulton. We had a fun day
spent with him and the team and
we also got to know another
half of the Bam family - Melissa
from Melissa Glam Bam Hair
& Makeup, who did her sister
Melinda proud.

ANTI-AGING
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE WILL FIND
THE SOLUTION TO AGING BY 2033
By Savannah Freemantle
R
esearchers say they are on the verge of cracking the aging
code. They also say death caused by aging may become
obsolete by 2033 if artificial intelligence gets involved.
Scientists from the Maximum Life Foundation
believe the combination of two fields of science will
cure aging. They also believe this combination will keep
us healthy and young. These fields are artificial intelligence and gene
therapy.
Researchers at Scicog Systems are creating an “Artificial Scientist”.
They say it will essentially be the smartest scientist in the world.
The researchers say that in approximately three years they will have
gathered every bit of aging research available. They will then programme
this into the Artificial Scientist.
The Artificial Scientist will be able to comprehend and dissect the
quadrillions of chemical reactions that occur in the human body. It
will also unravel the code of the 20 000 human genes, and identify the
patterns that are unrecognisable to humans.
