DINNER PLAIN
HISTORY
The tradition of hospitality at
Dinner Plain goes back well over a
century, when mountain cattlemen
first discovered this beautiful stretch
of countryside as an ideal place to
relax, rustle up a meal and graze
their cattle.
reflect the heritage of the early
pioneer buildings in the Victorian
Alpine High Country. Built of stone,
timber and corrugated iron and
often boasting magnificent stone
fireplaces, each blends in beautifully
with the surrounding snow gums
and the high plains landscape.
OUR VILLAGE
The site of Dinner Plain village was
originally part of 640 acres selected
by Rundells of Flourbag Plain
and was then known as Rundells
Paddock. When the coaches were
running between Omeo and Bright,
they would stop here for midday
dinner, hence the area became
known as Dinner Plain.
Dinner Plain village was developed
in 1986 by a company called Dinner
Plain Pty Ltd. Peter McIntyre, the
company architect, was inspired
by the characteristics of the old
cattlemen’s huts. Dinner Plain is a
distinctive village in Australia’s only
freehold land above the snowline.

cattlemen could only have dreamed
of. There’s a well-stocked

for when you want to eat in – and

walks & trails
WALKING ON TOP OF THE
WORLD
There are a wide variety of walks
in Dinner Plain, the Alpine National
Park and adjacent alpine resorts.
The bush walking and mountain bike
season lasts from early November
until late April. The area is usually
snow covered or too wet during
winter and early spring.
During the snow season, trails are
groomed from June until September
and are suitable for cross country
skiing and snow shoeing.
In good weather a fit person can
cover 3 kms an hour. Remember
to make allowances for long steep
climbs, photography and rests. Carry
plenty of drinking water.
Self-guided walks
There are more than 15 walks
around Dinner Plain village. Start
at the DP Hut and follow the signs
and maps. Walks include the 2km
10
return trip to Carmichael Falls and
3km return trip to Room With A
View. Looking for something a little
bit longer? Try the 9km return walk
to Precipice Plain and be rewarded
with commanding views of the
Dargo River and the Dargo High
Plains.
Winter’s cross country ski trail
between Dinner Plain and Mt
Hotham becomes summer’s 10km
walking track – it’s a day trip, so
pack a picnic and plan to stop at
Paw Paw Plain for lunch with a view.
Great walks from Mt Hotham
include the loop that takes in
Machinery Spur, Red Robin Mine,
Dibbins Hut and Derrick Hut (1
day), and the walk along Mt Loch
Ridge (3 – 4 hours) which reveals
near-360 degree views of Mt Buffalo,
Mt Feathertop, the Bogong High
Plains and the Kiewa Valley.
The challenging 22km walk from
Diamantina Hut at Mt Hotham to
Mt Feathertop along the Razorback
rewards you with extraordinary
360 degree views of the Alpine High
Country. You need to make an early
start to complete the walk in a day,
and the track is rocky, rough and
steep in parts.
Guided walks
If you don’t feel you have sufficient
experience or you’d rather leave the
planning to someone else, why not
book a guided walk? These can take
you to some of the lesser known
tracks around Dinner Plain and Mt
Hotham. They range from pleasant
sunrise or sunset strolls to half
day, full day and multiple day walks,
and are escorted by guides with
excellent local knowledge.
Minimal Impact Walking
• Please keep to the designated
tracks
• Use a portable stove instead of
lighting a fire - especially above the
tree line
• Always check fire danger forecast
• NO FIRES (INCLUDING STOVES)
ON DAYS OF TOTAL FIRE BAN
• Where toilets are not provided
bury toilet waste at least 100m
from water, walking tracks and
campsites
• Dogs and other pets are not
permitted in the Alpine National
Park
• Take your rubbish home
• Native plants are protected - leave
wildflowers for others to enjoy
• Mountain bikes are permitted on
designated trails
Weather conditions can change rapidly in alpine areas. Be prepared!
• Wind and waterproof jackets • Warm clothing - hat, gloves and sturdy
footwear • Map and compass • First aid kit • Carry plenty of water

HIGH COUNTRY HUTS*
Boggy Creek Hut
During the summer of 2003 a
number of fires swept through the
Australian alps. Some historic huts
were burnt and may remain as ruins,
so if planning to visit a hut please
first check its status with Parks
Victoria or the Visitor Information
Centre in the village.
Boggy Creek Hut is another of the
CRB Huts, and is one of the two
original huts built in 1923 - 1925,
the other one being at Dinner
Plain. It is located 6km along the
Great Alpine Road heading towards
Omeo.
Dinner Plain CRB Hut
CRB Hut is located on the northern
side of the Great Alpine Road,
outside the main entrance to the
village. It was built in 1923 -1925
and is known to have survived the
Black Friday fires in 1939. The hut is
well preserved and is protected by a
heritage order.
JB Hut
JB Hut is located on JB Plain,
just 2km west of Dinner Plain,
approximately 250m from the
Great Alpine Road. The hut was
relocated to JB Plain in the 1970’s
and is believed to have been built
in the late 1940’s. It was possibly
a forestry hut in the Swifts Creek
area.
22
JB Hut
Wire Plain Hut
VISITING THE HUTS
There is a locked cattleman’s hut
on the northern side of the Great
Alpine Road at Wire Plain.
Enjoy visiting the huts but please
do not use them for overnight
accommodation. Huts are for
temporary refuge only.
Mr Billy Howard, mountain
cattleman from the Ovens district
built this hut in 1962. Part of the hut
was prefabricated and brought in by
truck and the back of the hut was
built on site to house saddles and a
water tank.
For further information please refer
to: www.hutsvictoria.org.au
Leave the hut clean and secure.
If you must use the fireplace,
check the fire is out and close
the doors and windows securely.
Don’t leave emergency food
stores in the hut as they clutter
up the hut and encourage rats.
* Hut information supplied courtesy of ‘Victoria’s Alpine Heritage Huts of the High Plains’, Fiona Magnussen, Alpine Publishing
Dinner Plain.

LOOKING AFTER THE
ALPINE ENVIRONMENT
LANDCARE
The Alpine environment is one of
the most pristine environments in
Australia. It contains a number of
unique flora and fauna species.
Threats include the invasion of
weed species, which can travel great
distances on the tyres of vehicles
and the underneath of footwear, and
feral animals attacking local fauna.
of the Alpine Bog is threatened by
development, feral animals, weed
invasion and global warming.
GRASSLANDS
Our grasslands are unique and
unfortunately are under threat all
over Australia.Your local Council
and DSE can help you identifiy
native grasses.
THE ALPINE BOG
SNOW GUMS
Alpine Bogs are rare in Australia;
they can be defined as a
permanently wet area of ground
that supports a range of flora and
fauna. Alpine Bogs are an iconic
part of the Australian landscape
and their health is an indicator
of the success of environmental
management practices. The survival
Snow gum forests take many years
to establish and the growth rate of
the snow gum is very slow. Many
fauna species live in snowgum
forests. Snowgum survival is
threatened by development and
bush fires.
DO:
DON’T:
• Find out how to identify local species
• Only grow plants that naturally grow in
the area
• Remove weeds when they appear
• Plant only local grasses around your home
• Please stay out of the alpine bog
• Remove local plants
• Bring pets into alpine areas
• Remove a species unless you know it is a
weed
• Dump chemicals or pollute the
groundwater
• Remove or kill native animals
• Light fires
