COLLABORATIVE/INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS
College Now – Kingsborough is an acknowledged national leader in the development of
collaborative programs, particularly with the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE).
The campus pioneered the nationally acclaimed College Now, a transition to college program
for moderate-achieving high school juniors and seniors. Funded by the City and State,
Kingsborough’s College Now program serves 6,000 students in 35 high schools across New York
City. Virtually all of these students enroll in a college upon graduation. Noting the program’s
success, the City University expanded College Now throughout the City.
The Leon M. Goldstein High School for the Sciences – Also in partnership with the NYCDOE,
Kingsborough houses and provides support for this on-campus public high school.
The Kingsborough Early College Secondary School (KECSS) – Part of the Early College Initiative
of the City University of New York, KECSS is a 6th through 12th grade public school that offers
its students the opportunity to take college courses at Kingsborough concurrently with their
high school studies. Some earn their high school diploma and an associate’s degree at the
same time. (Thirty-nine students – out of the 75 students in the inaugural class – did so in
2013.)
The Kingsborough Center for Economic and Workforce Development (CEWD) – CEWD’s mission
is to provide New York’s under- and unemployed residents with the training and skills necessary
to advance their careers or continue their educations. Through a series of initiatives in partner
ship with Kingsborough’s Office of Continuing Education and the Department of Tourism and
Hospitality, and other CUNY and non-CUNY partners, CEWD connects with local businesses to
develop trainings that meet the needs of New York’s continually changing economy. Most
notably, Kingsborough, through CEWD, was the lead institution in a seven-college consortium
that was awarded a three-year, $20 million dollar US Department of Labor Trade Adjustment
Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant.
Current CEWD programs include:
CareerPATH, which provides career and college-focused occupational training, with
integrated math skills instruction in culinary arts, food and beverage service/hospitality,
and community health. Participants can earn industry-recognized credentials needed to find
jobs, as well as translate their training into college credit and enter degree programs.

urban farming expertise and first-hand experience building a more sustainable food system.
