Reduce air pollution with persuasive
design approach
Abstract—According to the statement that
issued by the World Health Organization, about
seven million inhabitants of Earth have lost
their life caused by air pollution, which six
millions belong to Asia. The most important
environmental issue in big cities in the world
and especially in the Middle East is air
pollution that has affected many aspects of life
in society. The existence of the large amount of
pollutant in industrial cities, reduces quality of
life in these cities and threats to public health.
Therefore, committing people to the rules and
principles of sustainability can change this
circumstance. To achieve the sustainable
development
goals,
environmental
sustainability that in relation to architecture and
design, is very important. Therefore the
environmental problems that have endangered
the human’s future, has prompted designers to
remedy.
To solve the air pollution crisis, has taken many
measures until now that would categorize them
in technical, cultural and educational. The
technical group is about upgrading vehicle
conditions, fuels, Stationary sources and urban
infrastructure. The cultural and educational
division includes: informing, strengthening the
symbolic movement, proportioning public
culture and informing general people, through
broadcast messages, warnings and the
information related to pollution. This paper
focused on any movement that belongs to
cultural category. In fact, to fruition any
cultural movements to reducing the air
pollution, informing and persuading people
should do precisely and scientifically. Due to
the lake of persuasive factors, some of cultural
movements usually fails. In this research, we
investigated for the success and failure reasons
in persuasive cultural solutions and using
FBM: Fogg Behavior Model as a pattern. The
Fogg Behavior model shows that three
elements must converge at the same moment
for a behavior to occur: Motivation, ability, and
trigger. When a behavior does not occur, at
least one of those three elements is missing.
Also analyzing any cultural movement with
these three factors. After analyzing the data, we
decide a solution that is present in a new
context in addition the three factors that
mentioned.
The goal of this research is affecting the
citizenship behaviors to reducing the air
pollution with manner of design. In this way
using tools that people have interacted with
them every day is the most important challenge
in this paper. In the proposal, architecture
elements specially building’s façades are used
to persuade and informing people. In
architecture, the façade of a building is often
the most important aspect from a design
standpoint, as it sets the tone for the rest of the
building.
