Clearances A clearance to another district club will only be granted provided all financial commitments are cleared including payment of second training fees, together with return of any equipment or uniform that may be on loan. Once a season has commenced, a player who wishes to be cleared to another club, will be required to pay that season's subscriptions, as well as the administration fee. This is regardless of whether the player has played that season or not, as the team nomination was based on the understanding that the player would form part of that team. j. Fundraising/Social Events The Club Fundraising Committee is responsible for raising additional funds. All funds raised go into developing the programmes at the club and keeping fees as low as possible. We are always looking for new and innovative ways to raise funds for the club and any ideas will be welcomed. The club looks to hold two major events during the year, being the Annual Club Senior Presentation Awards evening and Junior Presentation Day, which requires the support of players and parents. In addition other fund raising/social events will be held from time to time. k. Sponsorship The Club is always looking for organisations to assist the club financially with sponsorship. Various forms of sponsorship are available; in fact we will tailor a package to suit the Club’s and sponsor’s needs. All enquiries should be directed through the Club President or approach a member of the Executive Committee to discuss further. 11 Sponsorship may range from financial assistance, to donation of goods and services that we can use to raise funds. Website l. Our Club website (www.lionsbasketball.com.au) is updated regularly to keep all players and club members informed with club news and events. Insurance The club is insured though Basketball SA and for more information please follow the link below. http://www.basketballsa.com.au/index.php?id=49 2. CODES OF CONDUCT a. Coaches Our parents and athletes join Central Districts with very high expectations of the quality of coaching they receive. Parents and players also expect our club will provide an atmosphere of excellence that is appropriate to their current level. Coaches are to familiarise themselves with the ‘Play by the Rules’ code of conduct available at http://www.playbytherules.net.au (navigation: left hand navigation menu, to “coaches and officials”, “Your roles and responsibilities”). Below is a summary overview; Coaches, officials and others: have a responsibility to provide a safe environment for players and participants that is free from discrimination, harassment and abuse have the right to be treated respectfully and fairly in carrying out their duties should take care not to be placed in a situation where they could be accused of discrimination, harassment or child abuse Coaches and others should: not lose their temper ensure physical contact is appropriate adopt positive language and behaviour treat all team members appropriately 12 Our coaches will learn about and develop an understanding of the Australian High Performance Pathway and guide our athletes in setting and achieving goals along this pathway. We know, down to our “bones”, that aggressive defence will win games. Our junior program will be recognised for our “on-ball” defence, our defence 1 pass away from the ball and our level of pressure and aggression Practice will be constantly moving and players will show a sense of urgency. When calling players in at practice, we will call “bunch it up”. Players will have 8 seconds to run in and 5 seconds to talk it up and high five their team mates for a job well done. Players learn by doing more than listening or seeing. "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." We will use player-on-player defence to develop our player’s defensive skills. Zone defence will not be played in the summer season and only occasionally in the winter season. We may play zone in key tournaments such as State Championships if it will help our teams win. Good, hard transition will form the basis of our team offense. Our Coaches will utilise a motion offense. We define motion offense as any offense where ball movement predominantly precipitates player movement as opposed to player movement predominantly precipitating ball movement. Our players also must learn to make their own reads within the offense and be able to create scoring opportunities, by breaking down their defence off the dribble, or off of some type of offensive screening action (Screen, Cut, Creating Space etc.) We will teach players how to create scoring opportunities by teaching players Memphis/Dribble drive motion/AASAA concepts & drills in our trainings. The level to which coaches use these in games is up to their discretion. Our club believes in coaching depth and leaving a legacy. Current senior players will be encouraged to join our coaching ranks as Assistant Coaches. All coaches will work together to approach current players and move them into coaching. Most senior player’s greatest chance to leave a legacy to our game is to get into junior coaching and produce the next great athletes. Balanced feedback is important and these are our expectations: 1. Use a variety of approaches with players. Some examples; a. Give feedback on the player’s execution of the skill as well as the result. b. Ensure regular catch-ups with players for one-on-one feedback (ensure this is in a public area). c. Use a combination of constructive feedback and positive reinforcement. 2. Understand the learning process of players and that they will sometimes need to practice a skill before executing it correctly. If they cannot execute a skill it may be appropriate attempt to break it down to greater simplicity. 3. Ensure criticisms are constructive, focussing on the player’s skill executions/behaviours and not criticising the individual. 4. Understand the level/group you are coaching and tailor your feedback in a way they will understand. Coaching U18s is very different to coaching U12s. a. For an athlete that may be struggling with confidence and/or form try to focus on positives as much as possible 5. Balance criticism with praise. If giving criticism try to include positive feedback as soon as possible, ideally in the same sentence. Players must learn to deal with a combination of constructive feedback as well as praise. 13 6. Always be fair, honest and firm. 7. Be approachable and open to feedback from athletes. Feedback works 2 ways; if you give it you should be able to accept it. Coaches are expected to; Be a positive role model and ensure the expectations for players are consistent with their expectations for themselves. Ensure anything taught and any feedback is consistent with the “Lions Way” manual and with our program in general. Follow the off court processes and policies and procedures outlined in the “Lions Way”. Credible coaching of juniors at the district level is probably one of the more challenging endeavours we take up in our lives. Young athletes and parents can be unforgiving and are sometimes intolerant of anything except what they see as perfection. As with all challenging endeavours our coaches are always open to learning and new challenges and concepts. Coaching skills take time to develop, no matter what previous playing experience; coaches spend time learning from others and doing lots of research. Getting involved in, or even observing, an elite program such as ABL, SASI, State programs helps develop coaches’ skills and knowledge. Credible coaches that provide correct, fair and a mix of positive and constructive feedback earn the respect of their athletes. This will maximise the coaches ability to get the best out of their athletes and maximise their athlete’s development, an extremely satisfying outcome for all. b. Players Central District’s players are expected to; - Play by the rules. - Refer to their coach as “coach” whenever they are on court at trainings or games. - Never argue with an official (If you disagree, have your coach or team manager approach the official during a break or after the match) - Control your temper. Verbal abuse of an official or other player, deliberately distracting or provoking an opponent is not acceptable or permitted in any sport. - Work equally hard for yourself and/or for your team. Your team's performance will benefit and so will you. - Be a good sport. Applaud all good plays whether they are by your team, opponent or the other team. - Treat all players, as you would like to be treated. Do not interfere with, bully or take unfair advantage of another player. - Cooperate with your coach, teammates, and opponents; without them there would be no competition. - Play for the "fun of it" and not just to please parents and coaches. - Avoid use of derogatory or discriminatory language. Remember that undue or unnecessary recklessness on the court may result in a technical foul against a player or may result in a report on a player. In the event of a player being reported for an incident at a match, the player will be required to attend a tribunal hearing set down by BSA. Should the player be found guilty of an offence, a fine is imposed by BSA, and the amount of fine will be invoiced and payable by the player involved. 14 Naturally the Club does not condone any behaviour that may result in any penalty against a team or the Club. The Executive Committee will investigate any matter that is presented in writing before the committee and take whatever discipline action it deems necessary. c. Parents Working with your child is a privilege and we thank you for the commitment you have made to your son or daughter by supporting them in joining and committing Central Districts Lions. Our coaches make significant sacrifices to support the basketball and life development of your child and our coaches have a very significant role. Please support our coaches and be mindful that they are volunteers and your respect and consideration to them will mean that they are able to provide more value to your child. We are proud of the coaching group we have assembled, many having significant experience, skills and qualifications in basketball, education and leadership. Ridiculing or criticising coaches to your child only reduces the coach’s effectiveness, compounding any issues that may exist. All parents are expected to do your their share of scoring as per the Team Roster and any other game day task to assist the team. Strong encouragement and support of all players (not just your son or daughter) is encouraged. Technical feedback from parents or others, other than the coach, is not acceptable as it can cause a great deal of undue confusion and pressure for young players. Please follow these steps to discuss any issues with coaches: 1. Do not discuss the issue with a coach immediately following a game. Wait at least 24 hours and then discuss the issue with the coach involved. Most issues are resolved with a direct discussion with the coach. 2. If the issue persists, contact the Coaching Director. 3. If the issue still persists, contact the Junior Panel Coordinator. 4. If the issue is still not resolved then contact the President who will typically ask for the issue to be addressed in writing. From day to day coaches make many decisions in regards to your child and their team. Occasionally some of these decisions could appear to have short term negative impact on your child but have been made for the greater good of the club, upholding the club’s mission and values. It is important to support your child in dealing with occasional setbacks and disappointments in a positive way. Dealing with setbacks and disappointments and turning them into a positive is a critical part of any road to a successful endeavour. d. Spectators Central District’s spectators can best support the club and their child by; - Remembering that children play organised sport for fun. They are not playing for the entertainment of spectators, nor are they miniature professionals. - Applauding good performance and efforts from each team. Congratulate all participants upon their performance regardless of the game outcome. - Respecting the officials’ decision. If there is a disagreement, follow the appropriate procedure in order to question the decision and teach the children to do likewise. 15 - Never ridiculing or scold a child for making a mistake during a competition. Positive comments are motivational. Condemning the use of violence in any form, be it by spectator, coaches, officials or players. Showing respect for your teams’ opponents. Without them there would be no game. Encouraging players to follow the rules and the officials’ decisions. Demonstrating good sportsmanship and appropriate social behaviour by not using foul, abusive, derogatory or discriminatory language, or harassing players, coaches or officials. 3. POLICIES a. Player Trials Trials for current and new players wishing to join Central Districts Basketball Club are held once a year at an appropriate time for the following season. Dates for trials are advertised in the Club Newsletter, Club Website, at schools in our area where possible, in the local messenger and on the notice board at the STARplex Stadium. Any member of the club Executive Committee can be contacted for information on trial dates for both junior and senior teams. The Club will endeavour to place all players into an appropriate team, taking into account the players age, ability, commitment and character. b. Selection Guidelines Centrals will always endeavour to place all our players in district teams. When placing players into a Division the following will be considered: Players performance, ability and potential Outstanding desire and commitment to working hard at improving mental, physical and basketball skills Potential to compete successfully at club level and beyond Athletic ability (e.g. speed, height, quick hands, strength) Desire to become a better player Potential to be socially compatible and display a sense of "team ethic" within a group Demonstrated attitude to become an exceptional basketball player Be highly receptive to coaching Demonstrated desire to succeed, not only in basketball, but in educational, vocational and personal life A player must meet all financial commitments (payment of fees etc.) by the due date to be eligible to play in a team. Subjectivity is inevitable in basketball player selections. If a player or parent is not satisfied with their selection then they should seek feedback as to areas for improvement identified to them by coaching staff to gain an improved position. Generally, over an athlete’s junior playing career they 16 may have a new coach every season as they move through the higher age groups, and will be assessed by a number of different coaches, throughout their career. From time to time, due to discrepancies between the number of teams, and having more athletes than the club can cater for in existing teams, athletes will be offered a position in the domestic STARplex competition. Players playing in the domestic competition will: Pay reduced fees and be still be able to train with their age group at Centrals Be offered an opportunity to re-join the District playing ranks as soon as possible Still be a valued member of our club and be offered the opportunity to complete an “Intent to Play” form to guarantee their position in the following season. Please contact any member of the Junior Panel if you have any questions or feedback. c. Training Policy A training timetable will be distributed to all players advising respective time slots for each team. - All players are required to attend every programmed training session - All players are required to be at training session at least 15 minutes prior to commencement time of the training to warm up and stretch up. - All players from Under 12 to Under 20 must wear the club reversible training top to every training session - If there is a valid reason and you are unable to attend a training session, you must contact your team Coach personally before the training session. - It will be at the coaches’ discretion as to what is a valid reason for non attendance. - If you do not attend a training session and the coach believes that the reason given is not valid, or you do not notify the coach, your court time in the next game may be limited - If this happens consistently, then action may be required to be taken, which may result in a player being dropped to a lower division. d. Drug And Alcohol Policy The Central Districts Basketball Club does not condone the use or taking of any banned drugs as defined under the Association by laws nor those classed as illegal under State or Federal legislation. This policy extends to the consumption of alcohol. The Club will not tolerate any player, Senior or Junior attending a club designated training session or match under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Any player reported by a coach, team manager, or official as being under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be requested to appear before a Club Disciplinary Committee to discuss their actions. If a player is found to be in breach of the Club's policy an appropriate penalty will be determined by the committee and where this involves a junior player the parents will be consulted accordingly. Senior players should be reminded that under the By-laws they are subject to random testing and penalties can also be imposed by Basketball SA. 17 In the instance that any player, official, parent or spectator is found to be in possession of illicit drugs while attending a club training session, game or event; the matter will be immediately reported to the Police. e. Tournaments Participation in tournaments is an important aspect of developing a young player’s skills and abilities. There are a number of Carnivals which are run throughout the year including the Easter weekend and the June long weekend. The Club office generally receives notification of carnivals which are displayed on the club website / notice board. The Easter Carnival is held locally. June long weekend carnivals are held in a number of locations, which include Ballarat, Melbourne and Mildura. All teams who wish to nominate for any carnival must advise the Executive Committee of their intention in order to have the nomination approved by the club who in turns advises Basketball SA for insurance purposes. In order to attend a Carnival, your team is required to be accompanied by a number of support adults including a Club appointed Coach, a Team Manager and at least two other parents. Teams must be in full club uniform whilst away, which includes playing uniform with an alternative training top and club polo shirt. At the start of the season your team needs to discuss and decide, in what Carnivals you anticipate that you will compete for the coming year. This needs to be made in consultation with the Coach, Team Manager, Players and Parents to ensure that all are able to attend and compete. You then need to make plans of booking for accommodation etc. and start fundraising activities if required. Your Team Manager will need to discuss the suggested fundraising with the Executive Committee to ensure that the activities don't conflict with any club fundraising. The club has designated a number of Compulsory Tournaments in which the club will be represented including; State Championships – Mid May (date TBC) The State Championships is the top club basketball tournament in South Australia for Div 1 & 2 teams ONLY. Performance at these championships dictates how clubs are measured and whether team nominations are accepted for U14 Nationals or the Melbourne Classics (see below). It is a compulsory tournament for all Lion’s players. Non-participation in this tournament will be taken most seriously by the club and will result in a review of the player’s status in their regular team. As a club we need to ensure our current district teams stay together for this important tournament. In essence this is what all the hard work and effort put in on Friday nights is for, this ensures our competing teams have the best possible chance of placing and possibly qualifying for the Nationals or Classics. Therefore if you cannot participate in State Champs current positions in Div 1 / 2 teams would be seriously reviewed. You need to begin to plan your other sporting commitments around this important tournament, notifying your other clubs/school. If you cannot make any games of the State Championships you need to notify the appropriate Coaching Director in writing ASAP. Nominations are expected to be required around late March/ early April. Dates, costs and venues will be notified closer to the date. 18 Melbourne Classics (or Nunawading Spectres Tournament) – June Long Weekend It is compulsory for all Division 1 Teams and expected for all Division 2 teams to nominate for the Melbourne Classics (or Nunawading Spectres Tournament). The Melbourne Classics is an “invitation only” tournament based on placing’s in State Championships. The Classic is the peak club competition in Australia (except in U14s where the U14 Nationals are the peak club tournament). Teams need to nominate for both the Classics and the Nunawading Tournaments if there is any chance that their team might receive an invite to the classics. However if a team has not nominated for the Classics they will not receive an invitation, regardless of how high they finish in the State Championships. The Classics and Spectres Tournament have arrangements in place for transfer between tournaments where required. Nominations open immediately following State Championships. Team Managers need to get players and parents planning for this tournament as early as possible! Especially with booking accommodation, to ensure that the whole team can stay in the same place. Both Tournaments are in the South Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne, so the same accommodation options are good for both tournaments. However this does mean that accommodation over the long weekend is highly sought after within a reasonable travelling distance of both tournaments, it is recommended that parents book accommodation before the Christmas prior to ensure a spot. U14 National Championships The U14 National Championships are an invitational only tournament based on State Championship rankings. All Divisions are eligible for invitation to the U14 National Championships. Clubs throughout Australia measure themselves by performances at these tournaments. These tournaments are great for the athletes as they are intense and pressure filled, providing the opportunity for players and teams to test themselves and their skills at the highest level possible; a rewarding and satisfying experience for any athlete. It is an honour to participate in all of these tournaments and as we measure our Clubs success by participation in these tournament and the results we achieve, participation is compulsory. Any coaches or players choosing not to participate in a compulsory tournament must submit their reasons in writing to the Junior Panel via the Junior Coaching Director and this submission will be closely scrutinised by the Junior Panel. Optional Tournaments Many other tournaments are run at various locations and by a variety of clubs and leagues throughout the year that some teams may wish to participate in (e.g. Murray Bridge – October Long Weekend, Mildura – June Long Weekend, Bearcats – July, etc.). These tournaments are a great opportunity for your team to “play on the road” which is another key element in preparing athletes to play at the next level and gives them a great junior experience, but these are not compulsory. It is expected however, that if the majority of the team wants to go then the whole team will go. Among all of these optional tournaments, the STARplex tournament, held in January is the one tournament our club strongly encourages all teams to enter. With STARplex being the home of the Lions it is our strong desire that as many teams participate as possible, “flying the flag” on our home courts! This is an outstanding, enjoyable, fun tournament that provides the ideal opportunity for our teams to sharpen their skills before the summer season continues following the Christmas and New Year break. 19 Appendix 1 – Intent to Play Form Sample 20 Appendix 2 – Medical Form 21 22 Appendix 3 – 2012 Fees Structure Fees Under 10 Under 12 Under 14 – 18 Under 23 Seniors (1 training per week) Summer 2011/12 $90.00 $145.00 $215.00 $215.00 $200.00 Winter 2012 $150.00 $240.00 $360.00 $360.00 $270.00 Early Payment Discount (Pay by Round 4) Under 10 All Others $10.00 $35.00 $15.00 $35.00 Note: Fees may very as required to meet the needs of the club. The club also offers a “Country Discount Fee” structure for those players whose residential address is outside of a set radius arc north of our club base. This is to recognise the distances these players travel and in most cases their utilisation of only 1 training slot per week. For the 2012 Season the discount rate is set at; 50 – 300 Km’s 300 + Km’s 50% 75% Note that all distances are determined via “Google Maps” using the most direct route “by car” to the players residential address. The Executive Committee reserves the right to adjudicate on the application of any discounts. If you are eligible for a “Country Discount Fee”, early payment discounts are also reduced by the same percentage amount (e.g. Winter Fee $360 less 50% = $180, Early Payment Discount $35 less 50% = $17.50, therefore fees = $162.50) In addition, this year we have introduced a third child discount of 30%. This will be off the youngest child’s fees. 23 Appendix 4 – Venue Locations Adelaide Arena (formerly Powerhouse) – 44 Crittenden Road, Findon Adelaide Hills Rec Centre - Howard Lane, Mount Barker Hillcrest - 483 North East Rd, Hillcrest Leisure Centre Marion - Oaklands Rd. and Rosedale Ave, Morphetville Marion Stadium - Norfolk Rd, Marion Mars - Lower Portrush Rd, Marden Morphett Vale - States Rd, Morphett Vale Pasadena - Cnr Goodwood Rd and Daws Rd, Pasadena Port Adelaide - 50 St Vincent St, Port Adelaide St Clair - 109 Woodville Road, Woodville Wayville - Rose Tce, Wayville Westminster – Alison Ave, Marion Windsor Gardens – McKay Ave, Windsor Gardens 24
