Dissertation: Learning our voices: The co-construction of productive
mathematics discourse communities
Committee Members: Professors Jo Boaler, Jennifer Langer-Osuna,
Rachel Lotan, and Shelley Goldman
This study examines how sixth grade students and their teacher coconstruct the learning environment of a mathematics classroom centered
on student discourse. This includes the producing, sharing, and refining of
arguments. This dissertation seeks to answer the questions: How do
students’ identities as learners and users of mathematics shift as they
move from a transmission model math classroom culture to a sensemaking model classroom? How are the markers of success negotiated in
classrooms focused on sensemaking? The study considers the necessary
and sufficient conditions under which a class will engage in productive
sense-making debates, and what conditions might stymie students'
willingness to engage in public discourse. This study is unique in its focus on
voice as a form of identity, and its partnership with student participants.
