Unit 1 - Lesson 6 Human/Environment Interaction in the Eastern Hemisphere Content Expectations 7 – G1.3.1: Use the fundamental themes of geography (location, place, human environment interaction, movement, region) to describe regions or places on earth. See also 6 – G1.3.1. 7 – G4.3.1: Identify places in the Eastern Hemisphere that have been modified to be suitable for settlement by describing the modifications that were necessary (e.g., Nile River irrigation, reclamation of land along the North Sea, planting trees in areas that have become desertified in Africa). 7 – G5.2.1: Describe the effects that a change in the physical environment could have on human activities and the choices people would have to make in adjusting to the change (e.g., drought in Africa, pollution from volcanic eruptions in Indonesia, earthquakes in Turkey, and flooding in Bangladesh). Human/Environment Interaction in the Eastern Hemisphere Human/Environment Interaction in the Eastern Hemisphere Human/Environment Interaction in the Eastern Hemisphere Learning Targets: 1. I can compare how human/environment interaction shows us the ways in which people use and interact with the Earth. 2. I can describe how people can adapt to the environment by changing their behavior because of certain natural conditions. 3. I can explain how people can modify the environment by changing physical features of nature to accommodate their own lives. 4. I can explain how human/environment interaction can be either positive or negative. 5. I can describe that the Peace Corps is an American organization of volunteers who assist with projects in developing countries around the world. Human/Environment Interaction in the Eastern Hemisphere #1 • This lesson begins with a quick review of what you have already learned about the physical and human characteristics of the Eastern Hemisphere. Explain human and physical characteristics in SS Notebook. • • • • Pick people to answer with name cards. Afterward: Thumbs up/side/down for remembering Remember that as people interact with the environment they make adaptations in their behavior and modify their surroundings. This is called human/environment interaction and is one of the five themes of geography. We will continue to review the five themes, linking them together. This is one way to organize geographic knowledge. Human/Environment Interaction in the Eastern Hemisphere #1 5 Themes of Geography • In SS Notebook: Explain the 5 Themes of Geography (Choose 3 to respond by name cards) Afterward: Thumbs up/side/down for remembering • Use Social Studies Notebook: – TAKE NOTES on Power Point/DISCUSS 5 Themes of Geography explanation http://www.slideshare.net/NLCopeland73/five-themes-ofgeography-powerpoint-20596773 *Remind students to use MR HELP Human/Environment Interaction in the Eastern Hemisphere REVIEW NECESSARY VOCABULARY Human/Environment Interaction in the Eastern Hemisphere REVIEW NECESSARY VOCABULARY Human/Environment Interaction in the Eastern Hemisphere Human/Environment Interaction in the Eastern Hemisphere # 2 IN YOUR SS NOTEBOOK: 1. Write a list of what you observed (adaptations & modifications) from the book. (choose with name cards to answer) • Once the story is completed the class will look at their lists to decide which examples show modification of or adaption to the environment. DISCUSS Find examples of human/environment interaction. Some examples include wearing clothing, traveling by boat and train, farming, building homes and large cities, destroying cities during war, etc. Exit Response in SS Notebook: Define or give examples of Modification & Adaptation Human/Environment Interaction in the Eastern Hemisphere Port Huron Pictures: USE WEEBLY SITE: msdlane.weebly.com • History of Port Huron : http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~miporthu/PH _Railroad.htm • Port Huron in Pictures IN YOUR SS NOTEBOOK write a list modifications and adaptions that you observed in the pictures. After selecting country in the Eastern Hemisphere where they will be working (This can be done on the World Wise Schools website at http://www.peacecorps.gov/wws/ or by using an atlas, textbook or world map.) • Select a project that would improve the lives of the people living there such as starting a school, planting trees, setting up a market, or building a fishery. • Record your ideas and supporting information in a diary or letter format and provide background information such as physical and human features of the region. • Include a map of their location and draw a picture(s) of the project. • Your final entry is about the hopeful outcome of the project. • You will provide a brief synopsis of your project and describe the examples of human/environment interaction you included. ** ONE OF THE TWO PEOPLE MUST HAVE A FORM OF TECHNOLOGY Human/Environment Interaction in the Eastern Hemisphere #3 Project: 1. The food was delivered in a helicopter and was served to the people and children. I met some people and they had told me their stories on how they survived. My French came in handy. Day two The next shipment of food will come in three days. I met a wife of a missing person. She said, “It was heart breaking to hear the news of her husband not being found.” We had a nice conversation, afterward she said, “It’s nice to talk to someone that understands.” One year I’ve gotten to meet many new people and to know them much better over time. I have a year left, and I don’t know if I want to leave. Every day, more and more people lineup for assistance. More helpers have come to Port-au-Prince. Things seem to be improving very slowly, even though that’s a good thing. One year & three months The town is almost finished. The shelters are built and many more homes are in the process of being constructed. Everyone has been working side by side to accomplish our goal of creating quality housing. One year & six months My work here is almost done. Port-au-Prince is almost finished. The people are happy at having quality homes to live in. Last day Today is my last day. My helicopter will arrive here in three hours. I’m saying my last good byes to my many friends. Man, I’m going to miss this place, but I’ve got a family waiting for me back home. Bye Port-au-Prince. • COUNTRIES TO CHOOSE FROM The rankings below were published in the United Nation's 2011 Human Development Report and reflect the countries with the lowest human development. 1. Human/Environment Interaction in the Eastern Hemisphere Assessment The written answers to the question, “How have humans used, adapted to, and modified different environments in the Eastern Hemisphere?” as well as the ensuing discussion will show the students’ understanding of modification and adaption to the environment.
