Veterinary care at CCHS often extends far beyond vaccinating, spaying and
neutering animals. During the last year, our medical staff performed a number of
life-saving surgeries and administered treatments that many animal shelters are
unable to provide.
One of the happiest success stories of the year featured a Redbone
Coonhound named Tess and her puppies.
When they arrived at the shelter, Tess had
localized demodectic mange and tested positive
for heartworms, but her condition paled in
comparison to her puppies. The puppies suffered
from the worst case of demodectic mange that our
shelter veterinarian had ever seen. The pups also
had secondary skin infections, kennel cough, and
enlarged lymph nodes. To make matters worse,
three of them had hyperextended carpals, meaning
their wrists couldn’t maintain the normal upright
Daisy before treatment
position. Although these puppies were fragile
and their prognosis guarded, two volunteer foster
families agreed to provide them temporary homes and give them the specialized
care they needed.
Bringing Tess and her puppies to health took months of hard work and
heartbreak. Sadly, we lost one puppy along the way, but four survived and Tess
was successfully treated for Heartworm Disease. These survivors have all been
adopted.
We saw an unusually high number of dogs test positive for heartworms in
2009. Spread through the bite of a mosquito, the adult heartworm parasite lives
primarily in the heart of its host. Heartworm
disease is a dangerous condition that is fatal
if left untreated. While easily preventable
with a monthly chewable tablet, heartworm is
challenging and expensive to treat. We are happy
to report that all the dogs that were treated for
heartworms at CCHS went on to be adopted and
are doing well in their new homes.
We had some challenging cat-cases as well.

Dear Friends,
I’d like to invite all of you to join us at this year’s Mutt Strut
(Saturday, April 24). Yes, that’s right; I’m inviting all of
you, not just dog owners with socially-well-adjusted dogs.
Mutt Strut is not just about dogs and dog lovers. It’s about
raising funds for all the animals that need our love and
protection. It’s about coming together to celebrate the
bond we share with our pets. It’s about enjoying dogs, and
experiencing the joy they take in simple things like walking
in the park, bobbing for a hot dog, or chasing a lure. It’s
about community and it’s about compassion.
Mutt Strut is not just an event either; it’s a fund drive. The funds raised for Mutt
Strut go toward shelter operating expenses and benefit all the animals in our care:
cats, dogs, guinea pigs, rabbits, mice, ferrets, even the occasional bird or reptile.
Anyone can make a difference for animals by helping to raise funds between now
and the April 24th Mutt Strut. If you don’t have a dog to walk, you can solicit
donations in memory of a cat you adopted long ago, or in honor of your Guinea
Pig. Whatever inspires you!
The Mutt Strut fund drive is fun because you’re not in it alone! Many CCHS
supporters enjoy the fund drive every year and a sense of friendly competition and
camaraderie develops as the Mutt Strut approaches. Fundraising as a team is also
a great way to increase your impact and create a sense of community. You can
create a team with your co-workers, your family members, or for that matter, any
group at all.
So to those of you who have never attended a Mutt Strut before – and those of you
who have come every year – I hope you will join us this year as we come together
to celebrate our love of animals and the joy they bring to our lives!

CCHS Welcomes Sharon Andrae to the Homeward Bound Society
Sharon Andrae, owner of Andrae’s Harley
Davidson in Urbana, is the newest member of the
CCHS Homeward Bound Society. Homeward Bound
Society members make a major gift to CCHS and
pledge to make that gift every year for the next five
years.
Sharon grew up on a farm where taking in
homeless animals was a way of life. At one point
in her childhood, Sharon was looking after twentytwo cats that occupied the family’s barn! This love
and concern for homeless animals is what motivates
Sharon to give to CCHS. We are grateful to Sharon
for all the generosity she has shown CCHS over the
years and for her new commitment to provide ongoing
support for animals in need.
Homeward Bound Society donors ensure that
CCHS will have funding to care for homeless animals
this year and in years to come. Donors can join at the
Shelter level with annual gifts of $1,000; the Adoption
Sharon Andrae & Matilda (Tilly the Harley Dog)
level, with annual gifts of $2,500; or the Home
level with gifts of $5,000. If you would like more
information about the Homeward Bound Society, call
Lee Ann or Tief at (217) 344-7297.
Adopt A Day--One way to make a big difference
Not everyone is in a position to make a large contribution to CCHS in one fell
swoop, but if you are, consider our new Adopt-A-Day program. By adopting a day,
you are contributing the cost of running the Champaign County Humane Society
for one day -- a day of your choosing. We will announce your special day to the
community with radio announcements on WDWS or WHMS, posts on Twitter and
Facebook, a banner on our website, a sign in the CCHS lobby, and a write-up in our
electronic newsletter.
Since launching the program in November 2009, we’ve had two days adopted.
The first one marked the anniversary of a commercial pilot’s first solo flight. The other
honored the memory of a loved one who had been a great friend to animals.
Mother’s Day is still available! If your mom cares about animals, why not honor
her in a big way? Adopt Mother’s Day as a way to say “I love you” with a gift that helps hundreds of animals.
Or maybe you’d like to adopt your birthday or the birthday of a loved one. Business owners may want to adopt
a day to advertise an anniversary or other event. Whatever the occasion, adopting a day can make it more
special.
Adopting a day is a great way to make a major contribution to care for homeless animals and share your
commitment to CCHS with the community. The cost of adopting a day is $2,456, the real cost of one day’s
operations. Please consider this very special way to make a difference for the animals we serve. To adopt a day
call CCHS Development Director, Lee Ann Donner at (217) 344-7297.

Corny Shelter Math by Jennifer K. Stone, D.V.M.
It was January of 1992. I had moved to
Champaign-Urbana the previous July to go to the
University of Illinois School of Fine and Applied
Arts, and in the infinite wisdom of my youth, to be
near a boyfriend. I turned 21 years old that January
of ‘92 – just old enough to adopt an animal from
the Champaign County Humane Society. I was
really a baby myself when I decided that I needed a
companion with which to share my new life.
This was almost four years before the thought
of becoming a veterinarian even occurred to me,
and a full 12 years before that idea would become a
reality. I had no idea that I would someday
be writing this letter or that I would
someday work at the very shelter
where I was adopting my dear
friends.
Those of us working in
Shelter Medicine are frequently
asked how we can bear to do
this job when every day we are
besieged by the overwhelming
problems of sheltering. I think
that for most of us who choose
this work, it is exciting and
hopeful. Why do we feel uplifted,
invigorated and inspired when we are
faced with the kind of “shelter math” that
involves overpopulation, euthanasia, and complicated
infectious disease management?
Dr. Kate Hurley, the Program Director for the
Koret Shelter Medicine Program at the University of
California, Davis, College of Veterinary Medicine
believes that the answer lies in another kind of shelter
math which she calls, “Embarassingly Corny Shelter
Math” (ECSM). This is the math that compares a few
days of shelter care to a lifetime of joy with the right
family.
Dr. Hurley told me the story of how she came up
with ECSM. She once met a family who had their dog
for 17 years, adored him, and took him everywhere
with them in a shiny red convertible. “I was only
24 at the time, and it blew my mind to think of all
the years I was growing up from an 8 year old kid,
that dog and his family were out there somewhere
enjoying each other every single day of that time. All
this because some nameless group of shelter workers
in 1973 had managed to find the dog, keep him safe
4
and healthy for a few days, and connect him with his
new family. “
So here is my own ECSM calculation. I adopted
Vadalia from CCHS on January 18, 1992, at the age of
10 weeks. She was a snooty, black, long-haired spitfire of a cat, just as sweet as she was saucy. She died
of a mammary gland carcinoma on October 20, 2004,
just five months after I graduated from vet school.
The math: 7 days of shelter care = 4,290 joyful days
with me.
Shortly after I adopted Vadalia, I realized that
she needed a companion. I knew this because she
pulled the blinds down with her paw and stared
forlornly after me when I left the house
for work or school. On June 20, 1992,
I adopted Scallion, a very handsome
eight-week-old male tabby.
He was an average-looking
tabby, but his personality was
expansive. Scallion was a romantic
at heart who loved the scent of
ladies’ shampooed hair and adored
munching on freshly cut grass. He
would frequently throw himself to the
ground to present his leopard-spotted
tummy for belly rubs - “flumping” hard for
attention. He and Vadalia became fast friends
and she never stared out the window after me again.
Scallion passed away Saturday June 13, 2009,
at the age of 17. There are no records of his time at
the shelter, but assuming he was brought in at birth,
he only spent 56 days there before I adopted him at 8
weeks of age. The math: 56 days of shelter care = 17
years - a whopping 6,199 wonderful days to be exact of being with me.
I loved these kitties so much, and although I
know that there will be more kitties and more great
Cat Days to come (and Dog Days too!), their passing
feels kind of like the end of an era for me. They
have been here with me through everything from the
receipt of my undergraduate degree to the birth of my
daughter, Zoie, and everything in between, including
the trials and tribulations of vet school.
I would like to make a toast to my loving
companions who kept me company all of that time
and thank the Champaign County Humane Society
and those nameless shelter workers who were here in
1992. Thank you for caring for my babies before I took them home. It is with great pride, inspiration and honor
that I continue your work to help create the miraculous connections between the homeless animals in our care
today and the loving families who are out there searching for them.
Director’s Note: Dr. Stone wrote this essay in June of 2009, just after Scallion’s passing. In early
February 2010, she resigned as CCHS shelter veterinarian to take a position as Medical Director at the Lied
Animal Shelter in Las Vegas, Nevada. We are extremely grateful for the years of hard work and dedication Dr.
Stone gave to CCHS and we wish her all the best in her new and exciting position. No doubt, she will continue
to work the ECSM equation to the benefit of countless animals and animal-lovers.
A Year of Caring (cont. from page 1)
in a steel leg-hold trap. Despite what must have been
incredible pain, sweet and gentle Fern allowed Clay
to carry her back to CCHS where the medical staff
amputated the affected leg. Fern recovered very well and
went on to be adopted into a very loving home where she
is thriving.
Another tricky surgery was necessary for Annie,
a cat suffering from bilateral entropion, a congenital
defect in which the eyelashes rub on the cornea, causing
squinting, pain, and watering eyes. Annie’s surgery was
a success and she is now pain-free and has been adopted.
Sassy, an 8-year-old Blue Point Siamese cat, came
to CCHS with pyometra—a life-threatening infected
uterus (a condition that can be avoided by having an
Fern, happy in her new home
animal spayed). The surgery to remove Sassy’s uterus
was extremely delicate as the infected uterus weighed more than two pounds, a substantial amount for a cat
weighing less than ten pounds! After recovery, a healthy Sassy went to her “forever” home.
Even some “critters” got special medical treatment in 2009. Alvin, a guinea pig, suffered from corneal
ulcerations and was unable to blink. Without treatment, his eye would have eventually burst. Alvin received
surgery to remove one of his eyes at the UI School of Veterinary Medicine.
There are still some medical conditions too difficult, expensive, or risky for an animal shelter to tackle,
but we’re proud of what we were able to achieve in 2009. We’re also grateful to the donors, volunteers, and
local veterinarians who have helped with generous donations of time, services, and supplies. Without these
contributions, we would not be able to provide this excellent care for our shelter animals.

Life at the Shelter: Small Changes Make A Big Difference
by Amy Sponsler
Did you know that simply having a toy in a dog’s kennel can promote more
positive perceptions to potentials adopters at animal shelters? Research has
shown that people looking for a dog from a shelter prefer dogs that are at the
front of the cage, quiet, and alert. If you’ve walked through the kennels at the
Champaign County Humane Society lately, you may have noticed that each
kennel now has a Kong, a toy, and where possible, a fleece blanket. The
Kong dog toy is a hollow, hard-rubber, snowman-like structure. Food and
treats are hidden inside and the dog is happily occupied while working to
get the treats. These enhancements are just a few of the changes that have
been implemented since Laura Davis began as the Volunteer Coordinator
last summer.
Laura came to CCHS with a background in animal behavior and that
knowledge has led her to begin some wonderful enrichment programs for the dogs and
cats at the shelter. Before they begin regular shifts, new CCHS volunteer dog walkers
are given a two-hour training session on dog-training fundamentals. These
sessions allow for consistency in how the dogs are handled, which is very
important for behavior modification. More advanced dog walkers receive
additional training to work with more challenging dogs and teach more
advanced commands and tricks. In addition, each semester new animal
science interns from the University of Illinois run play groups for dogs
that get along well together. Each of these changes has helped to
improve the behavior of the dogs at the shelter, which in turn improves
their chances of being adopted.
Dogs aren’t the only animals at the shelter benefiting from new enrichment
programs. One of the communal cat rooms, Catnap Cafe, is now equipped with a
television monitor that plays a “Cat Sitter” video featuring scenes and sounds of a variety of animals including
birds, squirrels, and fish. A comfortable cat perch near the screen allows for the viewing pleasure of our feline
residents. A weight control program, which includes a reduced-calorie diet and a weekly weigh-in, has also
been launched for some of the heavier cats.
Small mammals are benefiting from enrichment programs
as well, largely thanks to one very special volunteer. Bob
McCormick has a wealth of knowledge on a variety of species
and enjoys spending hours each week making sure our
rabbits, hamsters, mice and other critters get opportunities for
human interaction and exercise. Bob also helps us maintain
suitable living environments, suggesting and implementing
modifications based on his research and observations.
While each of these improvements may seem relatively
small, they have all been carefully thought out and are
grounded in research. With the help of wonderful volunteers
and a caring staff, CCHS is working tirelessly to ensure that
the animals at the shelter find their forever homes.

Mavidea Technology Group Awards CCHS a $35,000 Technology Makeover!
The Champaign County Humane Society has been
operating with inefficient and outdated computer equipment
for years. The old system has hampered every aspect of
shelter operations from administration, to animal care, to
adoptions and animal intakes.
But these days are soon to be over! Last fall, CCHS
entered and won a competition hosted by Mavidea
Technology Group, LLC of Bloomington. The contest was
open to Illinois businesses and organizations. The prize -an Extreme Technology Makeover worth $35,000!
The prize package includes 10 new computers, a new
server, installation, and six months of IT support. It was
as if the package was designed with the needs of CCHS in
mind. The makeover will have an enormous impact on our
ability to serve animals and the public.

this month. The Mavidea team predicts that we will be amazed at how the technology makeover increases
efficiency and improves our lives at work. We can hardly wait for the amazement to begin–thanks so much
