Classroom Restrictions for the iPad/iOS device If you have students using iPads and/or iPod Touches in your classroom, and you’ve worried about how they are using the devices while under your supervision, you might want to look into setting restrictions. Setting restrictions allows you to prevent access to specific features or content on the device. It’s generally a good idea to set up restrictions on the devices before students ever have contact with them. This not only removes a great deal of potential risks, it also eliminates the possibility for students to set up their own passcodes (To fix this problem a Full System Restore is required). iOS Restrictions require the use of a four-digit code. When setting restrictions, try to ensure that you use something that you will remember, but is secure enough to keep students from guessing it. To enable and adjust restrictions on an iOS device, follow this path: Settings > General > Restrictions. To enable restrictions, tap Enable Restrictions and enter your 4 digit passcode. You will be required to enter the passcode twice. This passcode will be required to make changes to these settings or to disable restrictions. To disable restrictions, navigate to the restrictions option: Settings > General > Restrictions, then enter the passcode. Tap Disable Restrictions, then reenter the passcode. If you forget your passcode, you must restore the device through iTunes. Set the restrictions you want by tapping individual controls on or off. Initially, all controls are on (unrestricted). Tap an item to turn it off and restrict its use. You can choose to restrict access to the following applications and features on the device: Safari (Safari will become disabled, and its icon will be removed from the Home screen. You will not be able to use Safari to browse the web or access web clips, although other third-party applications may allow web browsing even if Safari is disabled.) YouTube (YouTube is disabled and its icon is removed from the Home screen.) Camera (also disables FaceTime) FaceTime iTunes (The iTunes Store is disabled and its icon is removed from the Home screen. You cannot preview, purchase, or download content, also disables Ping.) Ping Installing apps (The App Store is disabled and its icon is removed from the Home screen. You cannot install applications on the device) Deleting apps (You will not be able to delete apps or games.) Multiplayer games in Game Center Adding friends in Game Center You can choose to prevent changes to the following settings/accounts: Location Services (Location data isn’t provided to applications.) Accounts (disables changes to Mail, Contacts, Calendars, iCloud, and Twitter accounts) You can also choose to prevent access to specific content types: Ratings (To allow only movies rated PG or below, tap Movies, then select PG from the list.) Music and podcasts Movies TV shows Apps In-App Purchases (Restrict purchases within applications: Turn In-App Purchases off. When enabled, this feature allows you to purchase additional content or features within applications downloaded from the App Store.) You can also adjust the time necessary before a password is required to purchase content. Here are a few suggestions for default restrictions: 1. iTunes: This will block the music on the device. It will also turn off Ping, a social network for music, automatically. 2. Turn off Allow Installing & Deleting Apps: This will block students signing into their own iTunes account and restrict them from deleting existed apps teachers have synced to the device. 3. Accounts: Set this option to “Don’t Allow Changes” so students cannot edit or delete existing accounts (e.g. default student email for sending projects to teachers and the MobileMe account). 4. Turn off in-app purchase: This will block pop-ups carrying you to the app store to purchase additional features within an app. 5. Adjust content age limits as appropriate. Consider the following settings: 1. Music & Podcasts: Clean 2. Movies: PG 3. TV Shows: PG 4. Apps: 12+ 6. Turn off multi-player games: This applies to games in the game center. 7. Turn off adding friends: This also applies to games in the game center. 8. YouTube: Many times this is blocked already by the school proxy. If not, you may follow the directions below to make it a little safer… Create a Youtube Account (Use any Google sign in). Once created you can limit the videos students have access to by using the channel view. Find your channel by accessing: http://youtube.com/"Youtube login". Only videos you have “Favorited” or included on Playlists will be visible & will play on the same page Safety Mode eliminates questionable material from searches & collapses all comments Navigate to Youtube.com Click "Sign In" in the top right corner Once back to the YouTube page, scroll all the way to the bottom Look for this:
