Diocletian’s Treasures (Split)
The city of Split is famous for its 1700 year old Diocletian's Palace, home to the Roman emperor and his
military. Although resembling a fortress, the ˝palace˝ is enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage site due to
it being one of the most significant original structures of late ancient architecture. Today it is Split's center,
allowing it to be one of the major tourist destinations in Croatia.
Departing from Dubrovnik along the Dalmatian coast, there is time for a detour to a viewing point of the
ravishing Bacina lakes. After enjoying a panoramic view of the picturesque landscape, the drive
continues towards Split. Once arriving in Split's Old Town, there is much to see such as Peristyle (the
central square inside the palace), St. Duje’s Cathedral (patron Saint of Split), Diocletian’s mausoleum,
Jupiter’s temple, Vestibul, the Golden Gate, Diocletian’s underground basements and waterfront, and
other important historical and cultural sites.
Lunch and free time proceed the tour of Old Town before going on an optional visit to the famous Vranjaca
cave near Split. Discovered in the 19th century and open for visitors since 1929, it is one of the most
famous and well preserved natural caves in Croatia, and is filled with numerous pillars, arches,
stalagmites and stalactites. Touring this natural wonder is the last attrraction on our journey before
departing towards Dubrovnik where this exciting tour ends.
