This play is being staged in a marquee in the grounds of Riccarton House. The
marquee entrance is spectacular, with a tower at either side, and a contraption of
coloured circles rotated by a series of pulleys. Our tickets, which we won in
a ”Press” competition, were for seats in the middle of the front row. They proved

to be on either side of the central aisle, but a kind usher arranged for us to sit
together. When we arrived there were gas heaters on full bore, and the marquee
was pleasantly warm. However, the noisy heaters were turned off once the
performance started, and by interval many of the audience were feeling distinctly
chilled. Our seats were padded stacker chairs, but some at the edges who were
seated on hard wooden chairs must surely have found them uncomfortable. Still,
it’s a treat these days to go to the theatre at all with so many venues being out of
action, and we were pleased to meet several acquaintances there.

of laughs - a good evening’s entertainment.
“Being Ernest is the thing
that gives this play its wit and zing.”
