Camp Carlos 20 Summer Programs for kids ages 7 to 17! The Michael C. Carlos Museum celebrates 18 years of providing exceptional summer programs in which children and teenagers explore the human impulse to create works of art. Camp Carlos offers participants imaginative and innovative opportunities to explore the ways in which people throughout time and across cultures have taken elements from the earth and created works of art, or observed the natural world as a source of inspiration in stories, dance and song. In the galleries, campers learn from artists of the ancient world and, in the studio, from some of Atlanta’s best practicing artists. A summer of imagination and creativity await your child at Camp Carlos! Campers will hand-build with clay, learn the ancient lost-wax technique for making bronze sculpture, use paper pulp and fibers to create paper sculptures, and hone their improvisational skills while reenacting ancient myths of the gods, goddesses, and mortals that populated the ancient world. Age Levels Camp Carlos is open to children 7-9 years of age, 10-12 years of age and to teens 13-17 years of age. Seven-yearolds must have completed the first grade. Camp Carlos 20 Sessions and Hours Camp begins June 6 and runs weekly through August 5 (except July 4- 8). Sessions meet Monday through Friday from 9 am to 3 pm. Aftercare is available from 3 to 5 pm for an additional fee. Campers bring their own lunch and picnic together at noon on the Emory quadrangle, weather permitting. Camp Staff The Carlos Museum hires only experienced staff for Camp Carlos. Camp instructors are all professional artists and accomplished teachers. Camp counselors all have experience working with children. Low camper to instructor/ counselor ratios help to ensure the quality of individual instruction. Monsters, Demons & Winged Beasts Ceramics Studio June 6-10 (ages 7-9) June 13-17 (ages 10-12) Created in the imagination and composed of parts from unrelated animals, a range of strange, wondrous, and sometimes frightening creatures seem to have roamed the ancient world. Griffins, centaurs, satyrs, cow women, grylloi, gorgons, sirens, sphinxes, gorgons, and hippocampi populated stories and were depicted in art. Atlanta ceramic artist Ana Vizurraga will assist campers as they create composite creatures in clay with inspiration from the Monsters, Demons, & Winged Beasts: Composite Creatures in the Ancient World. $185 for Museum members; $225 for non-members Cast in the Same Mold Bronze Casting Studio June 20-24 and June 27-July 1 (two week session, ages 13-17) In this special two-week session of Camp Carlos, teenagers will learn the ancient lost-wax technique from the artisans at Inferno Foundry. They will study works of bronze in the Carlos collection and embark on the lengthy process of fashioning a model in wax and covering it in clay to form a mold. The session will culminate with several visits to the Inferno Foundry in Union City (transportation provided) to complete the process of pouring molten metal into ceramic molds to create a finished bronze sculpture. $370 for Museum members; $450 for non-members Paper Chase Papermaking Studio July 11-15 (ages 7-9) July 18-22 (ages 10-12) From sedge that grew along the Nile River in ancient Egypt to fig bark in the ancient Americas to cotton fibers in modern times, the art of making paper reaches back in time and around the world. Atlanta artist Pam Beagle-Daresta will teach campers how to use paper pulp and fibers to create contemporary sculptures. Handmade papers will make use of recycled paper to create biodegrading sculptures, inspired by museum works and the ancient rituals they represent. $185 for Museum members; $225 for non-members Of Gods and Demigods, Percy Jackson @ the Carlos Creative Drama Studio July 25-29 (ages 7-12) Mr. Brunner led the museum tour. He rode up front in his wheelchair, guiding us through the big echoey galleries, past marble statues and glass cases full of really old black-and-orange pottery. It blew my mind that this stuff had survived for two thousand, three thousand years.—from The Lightning Thief, Percy Jackson and the Olympians Thus Rick Riordan begins Percy Jackson’s odyssey with a visit to a museum, where he starts to learn that he’s a demigod in a modern world and that the ancient Greek gods and goddesses are still very much among us. Julia Prittie Kneeland, professional children’s drama teacher/director, uses creative drama and improv techniques as campers become gods and demigods who slay Medusa, find their way out of the Minotaur’s labyrinth, join a quest to rescue Artemis, meet the goddess of beauty and love, Aphrodite, make Percy’s shield and more. $185 for Museum members; $225 for non-members A Case of Sibling Rivalry, The Kane Chronicles @ the Carlos Creative Drama Studio August 1-5 (ages 7-12) You’d think magic would make things easier. In fact, it usually made things more complicated. There were always a million reasons why this or that spell wouldn’t work in certain situations. Or there’d be other magic thwarting you—like the protective spells on this museum. We weren’t sure who had cast them. maybe one of the museum staff was an undercover magician, which wouldn’t have been uncommon. Our own dad had used his PhD in Egyptology as a cover to gain access to artifacts. Plus, the Brooklyn museum has the largest collection of Egyptian magic scrolls in the world.—from The Throne of Fire, The Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan Join Julia Prittie Kneeland, children’s drama teacher/director, in a week of creative drama. Campers will become siblings Carter and Sadie battling Set who destroys his own brother Osiris and enlisting the power of the ancient Egyptian gods, Horus, Isis, and others as they unite to fight the Apophis snake intent on demolishing the world. Campers will also create amulets, shabtis, and Egyptian magic wands, essential when confronting the forces of chaos. $185 for Museum members; $225 for non-members Camp Hours: Mon-Fri, 9AM-3PM Aftercare: 3PM-5PM For more information, see carlos.emory.edu or call Nina West at 404.727.0519 Camp Carlos Registration Form Name of ChildAge Address CityStateZip Parent’s nameDaytime Phone Evening PhoneMobile Phone Email Address Method of payment Visa MC AMEX Check enclosed Credit Card NumberExpiration Date Name on Credit CardSignature I am a current Museum Member.
