Where’s the term gone? Suddenly we’re in week eight! Firstly, I’d like to say a great big THANK YOU to the parents, students, BOT members and staff who made it to the Working Bee on the 30th. We managed to get a few tidying up jobs and repairs done around the place and make plans for some further projects. The weather wasn’t the best but everyone did a great job and the children had a huge amount of fun in the sandpit! I’d also like to thank in particular, Lisa Ciseau for all the work she is doing supporting the Enviro Group. You will notice that we have new plantings in the courtyard area, a new worm farm and seedlings growing for planting out in the future. Lisa is also working with a smaller group of students during electives on a Friday, to tidy up and replant the garden in the pool area. What a wonderful challenge we presented to our Speech Judges last Monday! We were fortunate to have the same judges as last year and I would like to say another thank you to Bronwen Byers and Amber Scott for coming in to listen to and judge our finalists. Both Bronwen and Amber commented on the quality and standard of the speeches this year, and the improvements they noticed from last year. CONGRATULATIONS to the winners from each year group: (the full list of placings can be found on our website) Year 2 Year 4 Year 6 Year 8 Summer Tamea Caleb Ben M Year 3 Samara Year 5 Blake C Year 7 Jaidyn A special mention must go to our New Entrants, Sophie B, Broc and Ayesha who recited their favourite nursery rhymes - they were confident, expressive and very entertaining! We have had a number of sporting successes in the past two weeks with our Netball teams featuring in their finals week and our representatives doing us proud at Norwest Cross Country. Miss Rowlands has provided an update in the “SPORTS SHED”. CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU ALL FOR YOUR OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES! A couple of newsletters ago, I briefly talked about the government’s IES plan and the NZEI Joint Initiative on Communities of Learning. I am meeting with the other Kaipara Principals before the end of the term to discuss how a Community of Learning might work in the Kaipara Region and what this might look like for Waioneke School. After this meeting and subsequent discussions with the Board, I will report back to you. Finally, I would like to congratulate Merril (and Ross!) Tristram on taking up the opportunity of a lifetime! Mrs Tristram will be moving to the South Island next term to support Ross in his work for the summer months. We will miss Mrs Tristram tremendously, but I have told her the door is always open and I’m sure we will see her back next year in some capacity! We will be having a special assembly on the last day of term to farewell Mrs Tristram and thank her for her 20 years of service to the school. If you have any special memories or stories you would like to share please let us know! Have a great week - keep warm! All the best TERRIANNE HAPPY BIRTHDAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY Brooke – Riley – Leah – Shardae-‐ Cody – Matthias -‐ Oliver HAPPY BIRTHDAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES We are very excited to announce that our two new board members are Emma Bendall and Jason Bell, and we would like to thank all of those who put their names forward for consideration. We had a number of high quality applicants and encourage those unsuccessful candidates to consider nomination for the upcoming Board of Trustees Elections in 2016. A huge thank you to everyone who came to the Working Bee on Sunday – the weather wasn’t the best but we managed to get quite a few little jobs tidied away. Our netball season came to an exciting finish on Saturday. All teams had a very successful season. Our Spitfires and Mustangs both finished first in their grades. This is a massive achievement for our school. We would like to extend our gratitude to the coaches and managers of all of the teams. Your dedication and efforts are definitely appreciated! Kim Ross A brief background to school finance A state school is considered a non profit business by the Ministry and with any business has to operate within its set budget. Each year the Ministry sets the schools operating budget and it is the Principal’s and Board’s responsibility and accountability to manage this budget within the budgeted dollar spend. There are no extra handouts from the Ministry during the calendar year outside of the set budget. The Ministry does not financially bale out Schools that run at a deficit so it is critical that our school operates within its annual budget every year. I am proud to report that our School has for the last five years managed to operate just within annual budget spending right up, to what we are entitled to spend. Managing our Annual budgets accordingly has ensured that our School has not been in a position of deficit, and thus having to of set this deficit from additional school donations / student fees and fundraising. Every month our accounts and finances are audited by a Ministry approved Accounting firm which is CES Partnering Education. Every month, 12 months of the year we receive a Monthly Financial Report from CES who report on invoicing, payments and expenditure to budget against every cost centre. CES also manages our account payments through the Ministry and on behalf of the School. On top of these monthly audits and finance reports, once a year every state school has a full finance audit completed by a Ministry Auditor. Staffing The Ministry also determines how many teachers we can employ and sets and manages our Teachers Salaries budget. The number of teachers is calculated on our roll numbers which are submitted to the Ministry in March and July each year when we complete our roll returns. This calculation determines the number of teachers and teaching hours we must operate the school within. The calculation also determines if the Principal is a teaching, partially teaching or non-‐ teaching role, thankfully over the last few years our calculation has left our Principal in a partial or non-‐teaching role which enables us to have dedicated class teachers five days a week. The calculation and resulting budget of course dictates our class sizes and composition of year groups within those classes. Again this is a budget that the Ministry controls and sets and that the Principal and Board are responsible and accountable to work within. We are quite lucky at Waioneke with the current school role growth to have had approval from the Ministry for more teaching hours / budget to have been able to appoint a new teacher and expand to five classes. We hope that we will be able to maintain this staffing level into 2016 and beyond, however we are bound by the Ministry’s directive. Andre Ciseau School stationery and donations can be made via online banking Waioneke School Board of Trustees ASB 12-‐3011-‐0159280-‐00 Use your child’s name as the reference You can now pay online for your lunch orders. Tracey’s account details are: BIT OF A DO 38-9010-0692099-00 NO POTATOE TOP PIES Rimu Rimu worked hard developing their presentation skills during our speeches. They learnt about looking at their audience, to think about speaking clearly and trying not to race through it, they learnt about speaking so the audience could hear them. They also had to learn their introduction, their nursery rhyme and their conclusion, saying it from memory thinking about all these skills. I was very proud of their efforts. They all presented their nursery rhymes to Karaka confidently and tried hard to think about their presentation skills. We got some good feedback from Karaka with some last minute things to focus on. Thank you for your help Karaka. Broc, Sophie B and Ayesha represented our class, sharing their speech at the Junior Speech Finals. Well done to all. Karaka Well what a great week we had last week. We all enjoyed being able to listen to the Speech finals for the seniors and the junior/middle students. We had a great time and we were impressed by all the speeches we heard. Congratulations to all of the place-getters. Karaka enjoyed creating their planets using black card and a mosaic type technique with coloured paper. They are now proudly hanging up in the class for all to see. It was our turn to lead the school assembly on Friday and Karaka room enjoyed this opportunity to be MC’s and to share their learning. They did a great job. We look forward to carrying on with our topic learning and our next art project. Totara We have been busy investigating different planets for their information reports. We planned our reports carefully then wrote them out using facts that we had researched. We then published them in Google Docs using our class chrome-books. We have also started our Papier Mache planets and have been working together in groups. We have been learning about how time is measured and some groups have learnt about the lunar year as well as when leap years fall. I was really proud of everyone in Totara presenting their speeches to their class and congratulate Blake and Caleb for going on to win their Year group competition at school. Good luck to Caleb for the Nor West Competition! Kowhai It was most enjoyable listening to both Karaka and Kowhai’s speeches last week. What interesting approaches everyone had to persuade us on their topic. Both Mrs Ward and I were most impressed with everyone’s efforts. It was extremely tricky picking a top 3 from each year level to compete in the finals on Monday. With only 3 weeks of space inquiry left, we have kicked into high gear. Small groups have done some wonderful research on the iPads into their assigned planet. This week we will be presenting our information in different ways to display around the classroom. To end the term, we have the Star Dome to look forward to on September 22nd. More information about this will come out next week. Mathematician of the Week: Laurel Laurel has been working hard in group sessions to use her times table knowledge to solve tricky fractions problems. She is becoming a bit of a whizz! Reader of the Week: Corey Corey has been thinking about keywords when finding information for his planet research project. He has found some fascinating facts that he has shared with his peers. Writer of the Week: Dana Dana has been using the information that she is gathered from her research and put it effectively into her writing. You can see it in both poetry and creative writing pieces. Manuka Speeches are completed and what a fantastic job Manuka did! We wish Ben all the best for the Nor West Speech competition as he represents us. Great to see how much they have learnt about persuasive writing and speaking. We have been focusing on dance in our PE time and I have to say we had some pretty impressive waltzing going on last week. This week we are having our careers week and we are looking forward to all of our special visitors that are coming to share with us. We have a good range of people and careers that we will be able to find out about. We are also going to start looking at the careers that the children are interested in and find out what knowledge and the skills they will need to succeed in their chosen career. Congratulations to our Manuka sporting heroes our Spitfires team won the A grade final. It was an amazing game. Our cross country representatives were outstanding with them placing really well. A special congratulations to Brooke who attended the AIMs Games in the weekend and did us proud with her performance. It is one of the coldest planets in our Solar System. It is also the smallest Gas Giant. It is located 5.6 billion miles from our Earth and is the eighth planet from the Sun. Neptune’s Moons Neptune has fourteen known moons, Triton is the coldest moon in our Solar System. Neptune’s other moons are called Nereid, Proteus, Larissa, Thalassa, Psamatte, Helimede, Naiad, Despina, Galatea, Neso, Laomedeia and Sao. Triton orbits Neptune in the opposite direction of the planet. Climate Temperature It’s surface temperature is -201 degrees celsius [-301 degrees celsius]. It is so cold because it is 4.498 billion kilometres from our Sun and the furtherest planet out. It is only 23 degrees away from being the coldest planet in our Solar System. Special Features Even though they might be hard to see, Neptune has very faint rings.Neptune also has a big, swirling storm, like Jupiter’s Great Red Spot it can be seen from space. It is called the Great Dark Spot and is a darker blue than the planets colour. Neptune is not a livable planet as it is too cold and it does not have the right atmosphere. All of it’s moons are not livable for the same reasons. Neptune has only ever been visited by one space shuttle, Voyager 2, and it only flew by as there is no solid surface for it to land on.
