Reading Comprehension
A.
Antibiotics, also known as antimicrobial drugs, are drugs that
fight infections caused by bacteria. Alexander Fleming discovered
the first antibiotic, penicillin, in 1927. After the first use of antibiotics
in the 1940s, they transformed medical care and dramatically
5 reduced illness and death from infectious diseases.
The term "antibiotic" originally referred to a natural compound
produced by a fungus or another microorganism that kills bacteria
which cause disease in humans or animals. Some antibiotics may
be synthetic compounds (not produced by microorganisms) that can
10 also kill or inhibit the growth of microbes.
Antibiotic resistance has been called one of the world's most
pressing public health problems. Over the last decade, almost every
type of bacteria has become stronger and less responsive to
antibiotic treatment when it is really needed. These antibiotic15 resistant bacteria can quickly spread to family members,
schoolmates, and co-workers - threatening the community with a
new strain of infectious disease that is more difficult to alleviate and
more expensive to treat.
Antibiotic use promotes development of antibiotic-resistant
bacteria. Every time a person takes antibiotics, sensitive bacteria
20 are killed, but resistant germs may be left to grow and multiply.
Repeated and improper uses of antibiotics are primary causes of
the increase in drug-resistant bacteria.
While antibiotics should be used to treat bacterial infections, they
are not effective against viral infections like the common cold, most
sore throats, and the flu. Widespread use of antibiotics promotes
25 the spread of antibiotic resistance. Smart use of antibiotics is the
key to controlling the spread of resistance.

Blues music has enjoyed a tremendous resurgence in popularity
over the past decade. Once the sole domain of its southern African
American creators, Blues has crossed racial, regional, and
international boundaries so successfully that today it stands as a
5 major genre of world popular music alongside jazz, rock, rap,
country, and gospel.
All this interest on the part of scholars, popular writers, collectors,
and Blues fans has fostered a number of Blues “myths” among the
general public and occasionally within academic discourse. Like
many popular myths and stereotypes, these Blues myths are based
10 on some degree of fact, truth, or observable reality. Under close
scrutiny, however, they fall short as general explanations or
interpretations of the Blues.
Blues myths can be divided into two broad categories: myths of
origin and evolution, and myths of ideology and meaning. Myths of
origin try to place the origins of Blues in some earlier time, place, or
15 social situation. One such myth that used to be widely held,
especially in the early days of research into jazz history, was that
Blues arose in the era of slavery.
But this view confuses Blues as a melancholy feeling with Blues
as a genre of musical expression, a genre that includes a range of
feelings from sadness to happiness, from pessimism to optimism.
20 The historical record reveals that the earliest actual evidence for a
musical genre recognizable as the Blues comes from a period
around the beginning of the twentieth century.
If the Blues genre had originated in the slavery period, surely we
would have some descriptions of it from that period, as we do for
25 other genres of music, or if it had been a secret underground music
of the slaves, it surely would have emerged into plain sight
immediately after Emancipation, as indeed the spirituals did.

Although the guillotine's fame dates from its extensive use during
the Reign of Terror of the French Revolution, the first guillotine-like
instrument was used as early as 1307. It may have been used
earlier but the first solid evidence is its use in Ireland in 1307. It was
5 not used much until it became the official instrument of execution
for the French revolution. It was named for Dr. Louis Guillotin, who
proposed that such a machine be used for official executions. It was
actually constructed by others, though his name was forever
associated with the machine.
It was adopted because it was an egalitarian and humanitarian
10 form of capital punishment. Previously the form of execution
depended in part on a person's class. A noble might merit a quick
blow from the headsman's axe (the custom was to offer a tip to the
executioner to ensure a swift death), but if you were a commoner,
you might suffer the torture of a drawing and quartering or some
equally painful death.
The official executioner of the French Revolution, Charles-Louis
Sanson, said on April 25, 1792: "Today the machine invented for
the purpose of decapitating criminals sentenced to death will be put
to work for the first time. Relative to the methods of execution
practiced heretofore, this machine has several advantages. It is less
20 repugnant: no man's hands will be tainted with the blood of his
fellow being, and the worst of the ordeal for the condemned man
will be his own fear of death, a fear more painful to him than the
stroke which deprives him of life."
15
Some have speculated that these very virtues made it easier and
more efficient to use it as an instrument to kill in large numbers.
25 Would Maximilien Robespierre and his followers have been so
quick to remove those citizens who failed to measure up in order to
create his perfect "republic of virtue" if it were not so efficient and
humane? It certainly would have been more difficult.
Although the guillotine is most closely associated with the
30 French, the Nazis guillotined more people than were killed during
the French Revolution. Hitler considered it a demeaning form of
punishment and used it for political executions. 20,000 had a date
with Madame la Guillotine in 1942 and 1943. The last use of the
guillotine was in 1977. Capital punishment has been abolished in
France.

Reading Comprehension
This part consists of two passages, each followed by several related
question. For each question, choose the most appropriate answer based
on the text.
Text I (Questions 20-24)
After World War II, veterans returning from the Pacific all had
stories to tell, not only about the war, but also about experiences
with other cultures. There were tales of mysterious customs,
strange lifestyles, and curious ceremonies. Of all the experiences,
5 however, few were like the encounters with a number of bizarre--to
Americans, at least--religious groups: the cargo cults.
"Cargoism" was, and is, a widespread religious movement
among natives of the islands of Melanesia in the South Pacific. In
simplest terms, followers of Cargoism believe in the imminence of a
10 new age of blessing which, they believe, will be heralded and
fulfilled by the arrival of special cargo sent to them by supernatural
powers. This belief existed long before the appearance in the
Pacific of Western troops.
Those who hold to the latter view of paradise believe that Heaven
is joined to earth by a ladder, down which ancestral spirits carry the
15 goods, packed in crates addressed to specific individuals. They
expect that the precious cargo will come to them by ship, airplane,
or truck, depending on where they live.
When soldiers and airmen from the United States and other allied
countries arrived in the islands with huge war cargoes, it was for the
20 worshipers’ attestation that those who followed the beliefs of a
cargo cult were to be rewarded for their faith. Things didn't turn out
as the cultists expected, but few lost the faith. When goods fail to
appear, as in the postwar period, the followers usually assume it is
because they have not yet performed the correct ritual, because
25 foreigners have schemed against them, or because the cultists
have neglected the gods.
The cargo cult members do not know how the goods of
foreigners are made. They believe that the arrival of cargo must be
stimulated by some kind of religious ritual, because the gods will
respond only to correctly performed ceremonies. Cult leaders and
30 sometimes whole native communities demonstrate that they have
received news about the coming of cargo by falling into ecstatic
states.

Text II (Questions 25-29)
Czar Alexander III and his wife Czarina Maria Fedorovna
celebrated their twentieth anniversary on Easter in 1885. Easter is
the most celebrated holiday for those of the Russian Orthodox faith,
marking a time of hope and renewed life. So it was that on this very
5 special occasion the Czar wanted a very special gift to present to
his wife.
The Czar commissioned a young jeweler, Peter Carl Faberge,
whose creations were favored by his wife, to make a truly special
gift. On Easter morning, Faberge delivered an enameled egg with a
10 golden yoke. Inside the yoke was a golden hen, and inside the hen,
a miniature royal crown of diamonds and a ruby egg. Maria was
completely taken with the gift, which led the Czar to engage
Faberge's services every Easter thereafter. The Czar only insisted
that each Faberge egg be unique, and contain a surprise befitting of
15 an Empress.
Faberge came through, year after year, taking inspiration from
the lives of the Czar and his wife. For example, the Danish Palaces
egg of 1891 was covered in translucent pink enamel, encrusted with
jewels and gold leaf. Inside was a series of 10 screens upon which
20 were painted tiny portraits of palaces and houses in which Maria
had lived as a Danish princess before marrying Alexander III.
The Czar's reign ended on 15 March 1917. Faberge and his
family, including his five children, were held hostage for over a year
before they were finally shown to a basement and executed on 17
25 July 1918. Faberge's mother managed to escape death and
departed from her homeland with the Order of St. George egg -- the
last Faberge egg she would ever receive.
Fifty-six Imperial Faberge eggs were made in all, and of those
forty-four are accounted for and two others have been
30 photographed. Faberge Easter eggs were also commissioned by
Siberian gold mine owner, Alexander Kelch, but the Imperial Easter
egg collection is the most highly valued.
The mystique, beauty, and whimsical nature of the Faberge egg
is copied to this day, though few are aware of the history behind the
35 bejeweled symbol of hope and life inspired by a reign of Czars
whose own lives ended in tragedy.
