Fra Presidenten
Although the weather reports threatened rain, our 17. Mai picnic went off without
a hitch. A big thanks to all who turned out to help. (Special thanks to John Gregg for
patiently separating the sheets of lefse for the hot dogs.) Every year our Lodge hosts
this picnic and we get many people from greater Boston coming and bringing their kids.
We ran through 90 sandwiches, lots of hot dogs, and the whole sheet cake before the
kids went off for games and ice cream.
Then on Sunday, six intrepid Norumbega members were joined by 2 Norwegian
exchange students from Maynard High School, and one Dovre Lodge member (RI) on
the trip to Brooklyn for their 17. mai parade. We had a great time chatting with the
students as we rode in the luxury of a Mercedes mini-bus. Why don’t you plan to join us
next year?
Our June meeting will be the last one before summer break. Traditionally, we
announce the scholarship winners at the June meeting. This year we are also going to
hear about the new plans for the 3
Then it’s off for the summer, but although you may be traveling near and far, don’t
forget to send Vera your check for the 45
early bird special price. Norumbega was founded in 1970 and we still have 3 members
who joined in 1970. We have 59 members who joined during the 1970s, and we hope
to see many of you at the Anniversary Dinner at the Wayside Inn.

Vennelig Hilsen,

CHILDCARE POSITION FOR NORWEGIAN-SPEAKER
!

The next bowling night will be Friday,
June 26, at 6:45 p.m. at Lanes & Games
(2nd floor) on Route 2 in Cambridge (in
the vicinity of Alewife T station.) Just
show up!
A Good Read:
In preparation for the 45th Anniversary
Dinner at The Wayside Inn, get yourself a
copy of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s
poem “Tales of a Wayside Inn” (1863).
The poem is modeled after Chaucer’s
Canterbury Tales with seven people
telling their tales. One of the seven, the
musician, is modeled after the Norwegian
violinist Ole Bull.
Volunteer Needed:
Since Sheila Austin passed away, we
have been without a Tubfrim Assistant.
This position involves collecting the
stamps that people submit to you at
meetings and working with the
coordinator, Anita Arnum, to get them
sent in to headquarters. Contact Chris
Loken-Kim if you could help with this.

SUMMER READING GROUP
Anyone interested in getting together to discuss Norwegian books, contact Christine
Loken-Kim.
NATIONAL CONSTITUTION DAY - Kristin Botnen
There are few things dearer to Norwegians than celebrating our National Constitution
Day. We get together as a nation, don our nicest clothes, and wave our flags. I am
sure, if you could have a bird’s eye view on the land of the midnight sun, you would
see nothing but red, white, and blue on May 17th.
!
The celebration does not stop by the Norwegian borders. Every year Norwegians,
people with Norwegian ancestors, and friends of Norway gather to shout hurrah and
sing “Ja vi elsker dette landet”. We let our children eat as much ice cream as they can
handle, and we play the games we remember from our own childhood.
!
In Boston, Sons of Norway arrange a family picnic at the Scandinavian Living Center.
This year, leading up to the event, we worried about rain. Luckily the forecast was
wrong, and as adults and children arrived, the sun did too. Peter Vatne led us
parading, and Luana Marie Jøsvold and Ole Mattis Nielsen accompanied us with their
music. It could not have been more festive!
!
We are lucky to have so many people from Norumbega Lodge devoting their time so
that we can keep our May 17th traditions alive. I am grateful that my children get to
experience a celebration that honor one set of their many roots. Every year they look
forward to participating in the games that Karin Lein and Peter Vatne set up on the
field.
!
In Norway May 17th is known as The Children’s Day. For many of us, the children’s
parade is the highlight of the day. The children are carrying our future. It is our
children who one day will pass on our traditions and values. We were very fortunate
to be able to hear from four of our children this year as a part of the speech of the
day. Alexander Rosen and Maya Rosen wrote a song, Marcus B. Chen shared a
project he had done at school about Norway, and Nora B.Chen had written a poem.
!
We are already looking forward to next May. In the meantime, please enjoy the lyrics
of the song and the poem that was written for our May 17th , 2015 celebration.

We’ll be eating cake and ice cream as we play
We’ll be eating cake and ice cream, we’ll be eating cake and ice cream,
We’ll be eating cake and ice cream as we play!
We’ll be jumping ‘round in a potato sack
And play tug of war ‘til you fall on your back!
And the kids will always win it – doesn’t matter how you spin it –
Grown-ups are too old and their old backs may crack☺
