Celebrate Black History Month!

January and February are months when we
celebrate famous African-Americans who have
made significant contributions to our national
culture. In January Americans celebrate the
birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This
dignified leader fostered the civil rights move­
ment through nonviolent methods. His leader­
ship in strikes, sit-ins, and boycotts opened the

Although his life ended tragically by an assas­
sin's bullet, the legacy of his famous "I Have A
Dream" sp>eech lives through our celebrations
and memory of this great leader.
February is Black History month. During this
month, Americans reflect and study our heritage
o f a long line of African-American inventors,
statesmen, politicians, entertainers, artists, muscians, and ordinary citizens who were willing to
take a stand for their beliefs, such as Rosa Parks.
This month there is a historical display o f arti­
facts collected from the slave ship Henrietta
Male on display at the Mint Museum in Char­
lotte. This touching exp>erience makes the horrid
realities of slavery come alive for those who visit
the museum.
At our own school, the Black Culture Club
presented a Kwanzaa celebration at Christmas to
show us the principles and rituals of a true
American holiday which incorporates elements
from African heritage. The week long celebra­
tion from December 26-Januaiy 1 focuses on
family values and efforts to be a better, more
caring jjerson in the new year.
Make it a point during February to learn
something new about the many contributions of
African-Americans to our American culture.

Over Christmas break the Albemarle High
School Art Club sponsored a trip to Washington,
b.C. forthreedays. This groupof students, along
"'ith Mrs. Hopkins, Ms. Pollard, Mrs. Snodgrass,
^•'d some parents, visited many art museums and
**>storical sites. Over the three days they visited
Holocaust Museum, the Smithsonian Musethe Historical Gallery of Art, and toured the
^fipitol. When this group of fine students and
*'*ults was not being enticed by fine art, they went
skating outside, went shopping, and ate a lo t
group also enjoyed eating at Hard Rock Cafe

Carol” at Ford's Theater, site o f Abraham Lin­
coln's assassanation. Kou Yang, a dedicated art
club member, said," Being in the nation’s capital
really was a education in itself. 1 got to be around
many different people, and I got a feel o f how it
is to live in Washington, D.C." Tou Lo, another
active Art Club member, said, "The trip was a
new experience for me because this was the first
time I have ever gone out of state without one of
my parents. It actually taught me something
aboutsurvivalonm yown. Overall, the museums
and monuments were great because that is what
I like best, art work." The Art Club had a great
time and is excited about upcoming plans.

Competing to an extraordinary level, the AHS Quiz Bowl Team won first place in the local
competition in the State Public Library Quiz Bowl Contest on Saturday, January 11 at the Stanly
County Library. Competing members were Ellen Oettinger, Will Taylor, Chris Mauldin, Mike Bryan,
and members George Hoyle and Will Joines were present to cheer on the team. This incredible teani
defeated West Stanly, North Stanly, and South Stanly High Schools by an average o f 117 points The
team will advance to the regional competition in North Wilkesboro on Saturday, March 21.
On February 1, the team also competed in the Hi-Q Contest sponsored by WTVI, IBM, and UNCCharlotte at UNC-Charlotte. A total of eighty teams from the Piedmont competed, and our AHS Quiz
Bowl Team placed in the top sixteen teams, a very admirable performance.
Mike Bryan, team member, stated, "We had a great time and feel very proud of our performances.
We are also very happy that Will Taylor has much encyclopedic knowledge, as he has been able to
respond to numerous obscure questions.*'
Congratulations to the Quiz Bowl and their extraordinary success.

DECA Team Wins District Awards

The DECA team has more than once pre­
vailed over other schools in recent competi­
tions. This year the DECA advisor, Mr. Hollis,
took five DECA members, Marci Tucker, Ayana Carpenter, Kristin Burleson, Chris Handy,
and Stephanie Burris to compete in several
Marketing Competitive Events at Sandhills
Community College on January 8.
The team worked exceptionally well to­
gether and each competing member earned a
proficiency award in the North Carolina DECA
District Written Event. Awards were given to
Ayana Carpenter for the Food Marketing Se­
ries events, to Marci Tucker for the Food
Marketing Series Event, to Kristin Burleson
for Food Marketing, to Chris Handy for Retail
Merchandising, and to Stephanie Burris for
competing in Apparel and Accessories.
Kristin Burleson and Chris Handy were pro­
ficiencies winners in their categories.
This exceptional group of DECA mem­
bers triumphed over the numerous compet­
ing schools once again and represented AHS
to their best ability. Congratulations DECA
winners!
