Approximately 460 students participated in the day along with 40 businesses! The students were very engaged and there was a good amount of excitement at all of the booths. A special thank you goes out to all staff at Roughrider Education Services Program and especially to Wendy Moyryla for keeping everything in order! A special thank you to DSU, the southwest area counselors, the many businesses who played a crucial role in making this program strong, and the students for their participation. This day could not have come to fruition without all of you. As we receive the complete set of surveys from the participants, we will share that data in the next newsletter. Ms. Brittany Ludwig-Wood has turned in her resignation and is moving on to help her parents in their business venture. She will be missed but we wish her every success in her future plans. Good luck, Brittany! The Succeed 2020 work plan and budget are in complete revision as we work toward sustainability in the coming year. Below are some of my favorites. Quiver http://quivervision.com/ Quiver, formerly known as coLAR, is an augmented reality app which allows coloring to come to life. Color special coloring pages (there is always multiple free pages), scan with the Quiver app, and watch the coloring come to life. You can watch a video of it in action https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGMjsYHD7Ak Quiver now has an education app where the coloring pages are more in line with educational goals and needs. http://quivervision.com/education/ Aurasma https://www.aurasma.com/ An app which allows you to create your own augmented reality. Examples of how some teachers are using it in their schools Mother’s Day AR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-8PIZ6lock AR Bulletin Boards https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHIxYpBW7sc DF YouTube (Distraction Free) This is a Chrome extension which allows you to watch YouTube videos without the ads and suggestions on the side. Readability https://www.readability.com/ Removes the distractions from a web page so the user can focus on text, it also adds an estimation of how long it will take to read the article. Any article added can be sent to a kindle or saved as an .epub file. If you add the Readability extension to Chrome you do not need a Readability account to “clean up” a page. Internet Explorer Edge has a similar feature called Reading View. Actively Learn http://www.activelylearn.com/ Allows a user to add questions or notes to web articles, Google Docs, or PDF files. You can also create quizzes which are not tied to a specific file. When working with web articles the distractions are also removed. You can also associate standards to any question added to a document or quiz. There are many articles to choose from in the catalog or you can add your own. It is easy to share the assignments with students you add to your class and to see the results of their answers. There is a free and paid portion to the Actively Learn website. 3 300 13th Avenue W, Suite 6C, Dickinson, ND 58601 (T) 701.483.0999 | (F) 701.483.0998 www.resp-k12-education.org 4/11/2016 Roughrider Education Services Program Issue 7 From the Desk of Jillian Wass ELL Specialist The RESP ELL Department has been hard at work the last couple of months with standardized testing. As teachers, we all know that this time of year brings the yearly required standardized tests. ELL students ‘get’ to take an extra test each year that assesses their English proficiency in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. In a few weeks, the results of these tests will be released to schools. Therefore, in keeping with the effective practice of data driven instruction, I thought this month I would share the “Essential Actions: 15 Research Based Practices to Increase ELL Student Achievement”. This was released by WIDA (http://www.wida.us), the organization that develops language objectives, testing and qualifications for our ELL students in North Dakota. If you or your school have questions on how to implement these practices, please feel free to contact me any time! Essential Actions: 15 Research-based Practices to Increase ELL Student Achievement 4 ACTION 1 Capitalize on the resources and experiences that ELLs bring to school to build and enrich their academic language. ACTION 2 Analyze the academic language demands involved in grade-level teaching and learning. ACTION 3 Apply the background knowledge of ELLs, including their language proficiency profiles, in planning differentiated language teaching. ACTION 4 Connect language and content to make learning relevant and meaningful for ELLs. ACTION 5 Focus on the developmental nature of language learning within grade-level curriculum. ACTION 6 Reference content standards and language development standards in planning for language learning. ACTION 7 Design language teaching and learning with attention to the sociocultural context. ACTION 8 Provide opportunities for all ELLs to engage in higher-order thinking. ACTION 9 Create language-rich classroom environments with ample time for language practice and use. ACTION 10 Identify the language needed for functional use in teaching and learning. ACTION 11 Plan for language teaching and learning around disciplinespecific topics. ACTION 12 Use instructional supports to help scaffold language learning. ACTION 13 Integrate language domains to provide rich, authentic instruction. ACTION 14 Coordinate and collaborate in planning for language and content teaching and learning. ACTION 15 Share responsibility so that all teachers are language teachers and support one another within communities of practice. 300 13th Avenue W, Suite 6C, Dickinson, ND 58601 (T) 701.483.0999 | (F) 701.483.0998 www.resp-k12-education.org 4/11/2016 Roughrider Education Services Program 5 300 13th Avenue W, Suite 6C, Dickinson, ND 58601 (T) 701.483.0999 | (F) 701.483.0998 www.resp-k12-education.org Issue 7 4/11/2016 Roughrider Education Services Program 6 300 13th Avenue W, Suite 6C, Dickinson, ND 58601 (T) 701.483.0999 | (F) 701.483.0998 www.resp-k12-education.org Issue 7 4/11/2016 Roughrider Education Services Program Issue 7 Scholarships available to cover the full cost of Acellus School -- an extensive Training and Workshop that is designed to empower administrators and teachers to effectively deploy Acellus. NDSS.NDSucceed2020.org The North Dakota Regional Education Associations (REAs) are excited to announce the availability of a new resource for ND educators. The North Dakota State Standards (NDSS) Implementation Guide started through work within the Succeed 2020 grants as a way to provide ongoing support to schools in the transition to and implementation of the new North Dakota State Standards in math and English language arts. The NDSS Implementation Guide (http://ndss.ndsucceed2020.org/) was developed collaboratively by members of the eight ND REAs to help define “full implementation” of the North Dakota State Standards. It serves several functions for principals, teachers, and the REAs: Identify key components for full implementation, Establish a common language/common understanding around NDSS implementation, Assist schools in identifying areas for professional learning, Assist REAs in developing and delivering professional learning. The protocol teaches “gatekeepers” (those in a position to help), to prevent suicide through hope and action. In this suicide prevention training, participants learn about statistics, learn the QPR protocol and practice the protocol through role play, which gives them a chance to walk/talk through a person’s wish to commit suicide and get them help. Short videos are also used during the presentation to give more insight into the global statistics, the QPR method and why it helps, and also some background on brain disorders that pertain to suicidal thoughts and actions. QPR is not intended to be a form of counseling or treatment. QPR is intended to offer hope through positive action. QPR is intended to teach those who are in a position to recognize the warning signs, clues and suicidal communications of people in trouble to ACT vigorously to prevent a possible tragedy.
