Phillip: Hello, everybody. Welcome back. Sorry we've been away a
little while, but we've been very busy with Christmas and New
Year, and we've been working on some new materials, as well, for
Amigos Ingleses. Hew Year, anyway. Happy New Year, Isabel. How are
you today?!
Isabel: Thank you. Happy New Year. I'm fine, and you, Phillip?!
Phillip: Very well, thank you. It's good to be back. Hopefully,
we'll continue now with the podcast and try and upload them on a
regular basis. Did you enjoy your English Christmas, Isabel?!
Isabel: Yes, I did.!
Phillip: Yeah? What about the New Year? Did you enjoy the party?!
Isabel: Yeah, that was really good. We had the party at home. We
invited some English and Spanish friends, so it was like a
Spanglish New Years Eve. It was really good because we had 2
countdowns.!
Phillip: 2 countdowns.!
Isabel: Countdowns, so at 11:00, English time, it was the Spanish
countdown. It was 12:00 in Spain, so we all had the grapes and
English people were really struggling.!
Phillip: Yes, to eat the grapes.!
Isabel: It was funny.!
Phillip: ¿Y que es un countdown?!
Isabel: Countdown; la cuenta atrás.!
Phillip: Yes.!
Isabel: Then 1 hour later, we had the English one and we saw the
fireworks at the Big Ben.!
Phillip: We put it on the TV. We invited, maybe, I suppose we had
about 15 or 20 guests, and it was good fun to countdown twice and
celebrate 2 times was quite interesting and quite fun. The house
was a bit of a mess afterwards.!
Isabel: Yeah, it was a party. What did you expect?!

Phillip: We did have to clean up afterwards, but that's to be
expected.!
Isabel: It wasn't too bad, anyway. English people are very polite.!
Phillip: We hope you all had a good New Year's party, as well. We
hope you received everything you wanted for Christmas. We're going
to talk about today, a very important topic in January and that is
New Year's resolutions; propósitos.!
Isabel: You can already see that some people have New Year's
resolution, because suddenly, I've heard all my friends are
joining the gym. I know someone that works for a fast food
restaurant, and he says there's no one there. The whole year they
have a queue, and now there's no one there and they're firing some
of the staff.!
Phillip: Really? Because everybody's gone on diets.!
Isabel: Yeah.!
Phillip: A lot of the time it's only January, and then people fall
back into their bad habits of eating junk food and they quit the
gym. Today hopefully, we're going to give you a little bit of
advice on how to keep your New Year's resolutions. I think in the
past, we haven't been very good at keeping our own resolutions,
have we?!
Isabel: No. I remember last year, I made a big list with very big
handwriting and stuck it on the wall so I could see it every day.
I was feeling bad every day, but still didn't do some of the
things on there.!
Phillip: I think it was good of you to write them down. I think
you completed some of them, didn't you?!
Isabel: Some of them, yeah, maybe only half. I was seeing it every
day, and then after a while, after a few months, I thought, "I
don't have enough time to do the rest." It was maybe 2 months for
the next Christmas, so I just decided to put it in the bin. This
year, I'm going to be stronger.!
Phillip: Yes. What things did you write down last year?!
Isabel: A little bit of everything. Some things had to be with
health, like exercising more often, joining the gym, which I did.
Some of them had to do with English exams, some of them with work.
I did some of them.!

Phillip: You did a lot better than I did, anyway. I didn't even
write down any of my New Year's resolutions. I think one of mine
was, maybe, to stop biting my nails, but I still do that.!
Isabel: Thank you for sharing that, Phillip.!
Phillip: You're welcome. Anyway, it's a new year. It's 2013, and
it's a chance for everybody to turn over a new leaf and think of
some great New Year's resolutions and make this year a really
successful year. !
We're going to give you some advice for writing your New Year's
resolutions first, and then after that we're going to tell you our
own New Year's resolutions. Isabel, what advice can we give our
listeners for writing New Year's resolutions?!
Isabel: One of the things that I would suggest is to be very
specific. For example if you say, "I'm going to go running," you
should write down how many times a week you want to go running, or
how many kilometers a week. You have to be able measure things so
that it's easy to achieve them.!
Phillip: Yes. You should try not to make it too difficult for
yourself. Don't say, "I'm going to go running every day,"
otherwise you're setting yourself up to fail. You should say, for
example, "I'm going to run at least once a week." Another thing
that is really important if you're serious about your New Year's
resolution is to write them down on a piece of paper, or even
better, now you can go to our forum and write them down there. Why
is it important to write your New Year's resolutions down?!
Isabel: Because this way, you can remember them every day. If you
put them on the wall, you can remember so you don't forget them.
If you write them in our forum, then it's even better because you
are making them public.!
Phillip: Yes. Then there's extra pressure for you to succeed and
achieve your New Year's resolutions. If everybody puts their New
Year's resolutions in our forum, there's a special section there
now where you can see our New Year's resolutions. They're already
there. If everybody writes their New Year's resolutions there,
then in a year's time we can have a look again and see if we have
achieved those goals. Another good thing to do when you're writing
your New Year's !

resolutions is to have variety in different topics. For example,
you need to have one resolution to do with your relationships, one
to do with your personal development, one to do with health, one
to do with your finances, or to do with travel. It's important to
have variety and not just have all your resolutions about health.!
Isabel: Not everything should be an F-word that
to achieve these resolutions. You can also make
about some things that you have always wanted
experience, and now it is possible this year,
things that you like.!
you have to make
some resolutions
to learn or to
like hobbies or
Phillip: The important thing is that you've got a variety of
different categories and not all just focused in one area. We've
given a bit of advice. What about our resolutions? Let's go onto
resolutions.!
Isabel: How many do you have, Phillip?!
Phillip: I've got 10 resolutions. You?!
Isabel: I think I'm already regretting. I have too many. I have
16.!
Phillip: 16? Wow.!
Isabel: Yeah. I have to do more than one per month.!
Phillip: Yeah. Wow. Do you want to tell us yours first, and then
I'll tell mine afterwards?!
Isabel: Okay. I forgot to say one important tip, if you tell your
mother about your resolutions, because mothers are usually very
persistent; if you tell them, they will remind you every time you
speak to them. They will, "Have you done this already? Have you
finished this? When are you taking your exam?"!
Phillip: Your mother will definitely help you with that, I'm sure.!
Isabel: Yeah, put some pressure on you. What? Mine?!
Phillip: Yes. Tell us your first resolution, Isabel.!
Isabel: They are not really in order, but one of them is that I
want to learn basic Italian. I want to meet someone, some native
Italian- speaker for an exchange maybe once every 2 weeks.!

Isabel: Number 3 is to take my bike to work twice a week.!
Phillip: How long does it take you to get to work on your bike?!
Isabel: 25 minutes or a half an hour.!
Phillip: That's not too bad.!
Isabel: It's not too bad. It's not steep, it's just flat. Now is
not very advisable, because this morning, it was -7 degrees.!
Phillip: Very cold. Number 4?!
Isabel: Number four is stop eating ice cream or cereals at night.
I can only have it once a week, maximum.!
Phillip: Yes, you do eat a lot of cereals, actually. After dinner,
you eat cereals. That's quite strange. Maybe it's a Spanish thing,
I don't know.!
Isabel: No, it's not. Another one is that I'm going to read more
books and use my laptop as less as possible.!

Isabel: The other one is about travel. I want to go to Thailand or
New York this year, one of them. I haven't decided yet; probably
in September.!
Phillip: That would be great. With me or without me?!
Isabel: I haven't decided that yet. I also want to do yoga every
day for at least 10 minutes because it's good to stretch your body
and to relax yourself.!
Phillip: Yoga every day? Do you think that's achievable?!
Isabel: Yeah, 10 minutes. Why not?!
Phillip: Have you done it today?!
Isabel: No, I will do it after the podcast.!
Phillip: Good.!
Isabel: 10 minutes in 24 hours. It's nothing.!
Phillip: Yeah, it's easy. I don't know. Maybe one day you feel a
little bit unwell or you feel lazy. Maybe you should change that.!
Isabel: Okay, for 5 times a week.!
Phillip: Yeah, maybe. Maybe it's nice to have one day off, no?!
Isabel: Okay.!
Phillip: and Number 8, what did you put?!
Isabel: Number 8: I thought about joining some classes, but I
haven't decided yet. I'm thinking about salsa classes because this
is good fun and at the same time, it's good exercise. I also
wanted to some drawing classes.!
Phillip: Good. That's in the personal development category. Number
9?!
Isabel: This is related with English, and it's because I haven't
passed my advanced exam yet and it's something that I've been
wanting to do while I was here, but I've just been so lazy. I have
to do it this year. Also, I'm just about to finish my TEFL, so I
have to finish this.!

Isabel: 10 is that I'm going to take off every Thursday in the
evening. It's going to be my day off during the week, so I'm going
to go to a concert, to the theatre, and go out for dinner and
don't do any work.!
Phillip: Really? Can I come?!
Isabel: Yes, of course.!
Phillip: On Thursdays, you're going to have a day off; no work and
just have a nice time out. Then number 11? What are you going to
do?!
Isabel: It's one of my goals this year is learn how to cook
croquetas. We've tried a few times and they were horrible. Last
time, they were like bricks.!
Phillip: Yes, we need to practice a bit more. Maybe we should do a
video about croquetas. Number 12?!
Isabel: Number 12 is about family. My family, they are not in
England, they are in Spain, but I should call them more often.
That's one of my goals, as well. Another one is go and visit my
cousin in France because I haven't seen her for 3 years. We've
also been saying in the last few years we have to meet in London
or in France, wherever. We haven't done it yet.!
Phillip: Number 14?!
Isabel: Number 14 is fix the flash in my photo camera. This might
look like something stupid, but it's something that I have been
wanting to do for months.!

create at least 2 courses to help people learn English by the end
of 2013. We're going to try and create more material for Amigos
Ingleses.!
Isabel: Of course. This means I have one more resolution. I have

10 resolutions, I will do a bungee jump. I don't know if I should
say that. You can find my New Year's resolutions and Isabel's New
Year's resolutions in our forum. !
We suggest you go there, everybody go there, and write your New
Year's resolutions. It's not too late, it's still January. Even if
you're listening to this in September or October, or whenever
you're listening to this, it's never too late to write down some
New Year's resolutions. !
We'll see you next time. In the meantime, go to our new forum
because there's not many members there, yet. We want more members,
so please some and join our forum.!
Isabel: We don't only have to speak about New Year's resolutions
or things that you don't really want to do. We can also speak
about life in the UK, about learning English, or about anything
you like, really.!
Phillip: That's why we created it. We hope that you can use it to
talk about anything related to learning English or the UK. Happy
New Year, once again everybody. We'll see you again next time.
