TZ-904 Applied at Port Of Houston Woodhouse Wharf
Challenge:
The bulkhead pilings showed failure of the
existing coating and excessive corrosion of the
exposed metal surface due to the constant
corrosive environment in the tidal splash-zone
region. To maintain the integrity of the steel
pilings, it was necessary to remove the old
paint and recoat. The short window of
opportunity for the wharf to be out of service
required a coating that could be applied in a
single coat, with a short curing time.
Solution:
TZ-904 performance coating was chosen for
this test case due to its high-build film
capability in a single application, ability to
apply in adverse weather conditions, fast cure
time, and excellent corrosion resistance
properties compared to the conventional
coating. TZ-904 performance coating is a 1/1volume ratio, 100% solids, zero VOC,
modified-epoxy
coating
with
excellent
adhesion, flexibility, and toughness. The
coating is applied by a heated, plural
component airless spray machine. Due to cost
constraints, the lower portion of the surface was
prepared using a near white metal blast (SSPCSP-10), while the upper portion used a brushoff blast (SSPC-SP-7). This preparation
resulted in the removal of only the loose
materials, such as rust, mill scale, and existing
coating. The surface was prepared the day the
coating was applied.
TZ-904 performance coating was applied to a
dry film thickness of 60 mils over the complete
surface. TZ-904 performance coating was easily
sprayed in a single application with no sag.
Before: Pilings with old coating and rust
Surface Prep: Brush blast
After: Coating application
TZ-904 performance coating was easily applied to the
specified coating thickness over both surface preparations with
no adverse effects on the coating application or curing
properties.
Results:
TZ-904 was easily applied in a single application and the
operating equipment put back in service with minimal
disruption to plant operations. The variable surface
preparation, tight space, multiple surfaces, and adverse
environmental conditions had no impact on the application
process. The goal is to double the coatings life and extend the
time required between coatings.
