Letter
Letter from the Deputy MW Branch Chief
Dear SHAPIANS
It’s a pleasure to write to you all as MW Deputy Branch Chief; I was introduced to you by LTC
Brian Eddy last June in one of his letters and I can’t believe I’ve already been here eight months,
its certainly been a whirlwind time in MW (us Brits can’t get away from the gales these days!).
Before I start my ramblings, I’d like to welcome a new member of staff on to the SCL team, Mrs
Tania Carter, who will be working with Fabienne on the magazine. Tania arrives hot foot (quite
literally) from a tour in Saudi Arabia with husband Lt Cdr Kevin Carter (or is it Nick, you never
know real names with the Royal Navy ☺) our new Head of Sport and Fitness and its great to
have both of them on board.
Well the awesome Winter Olympics are over (I still can’t believe how someone on skis takes off
over a ramp backwards, flies backwards and lands safely, backwards. I mean, I can do the take
off bit but it goes horribly wrong after that!) and by the time you read this, it will be Spring time
and we’ll soon be looking forward to emerging from our winter hibernation, getting those BBQs
fired up and going out and enjoying all the great things Belgium has to offer. On that note, an
important date for your diary; we’ll be hosting a Province of Hainaut promotional event at the
Events Centre on 29 March. All the provincial tourism offices will be there advertsing places of
interest plus promoting great ticketing packages for SHAPIANS. The event is free and open to all
SHAPIANS so recommend you go along and learn a bit more about great days out in the region.
But before you stray too far, don’t forget MW as ever has a tremendous number of events and
services available too and I know many of the nations are planning various functions over the
coming months, more on those to follow in future editions. I must take this opportunity to promote some important special events in March. On the 11th, the SHAPE Women will be hosting
‘Seven’ at the Alliance Auditorium; there was an excellent article about the event in the last
edition of SCL (more information is this edition too) and I urge you all to go along for an evocative and thought provoking series of readings given by our senior officers including DSACEUR.
Hopefully, you’ve been out running and getting the mileage in your legs in preparation for the
SHAPE Half Marathon on the 15th. Its not too late to enter and if pounding the streets isn’t your
thing, please go along and support all those taking part. Speaking of running, we have confirmed
dates for the ‘Make-a-Wish event on 23-24 May so pencil that in your diary, I seem to remember
some great fish and chips available last year to replace burnt off calories. March will also see
a production of ‘Abundance’ at the Performing Arts Centre (13th through 23rd March). Having
made my one and only stage appearance in ‘The Real Inspector Hound’ (well actually my voice
did; a posh English voice was needed for the radio announcer but the cast ended up with my west
country twang). I know how much work goes in to the shows and how superbly produced they are
by Dan Lamorte, again I urge you to go along and support the SHAPE Players in what’s sure to
be another great production. And don’t forget Abundance is quickly followed by the production
of Aladdin on 3rd,4th and 5th April.
An advance warning for May; the Fest tent will be erected on 6 May and all hands on deck will
be needed to help MSgt Dave Hebert and SFC Rob Parker and our MW Ops team. Many of you
benefit from the Fest tent over the summer so please volunteer and help out on the day, and of
course there’s always B3s nearby and a cool Belgian beer afterwards to quench your thirst (more
details from MSgt Hebert x4269). Speaking of B3s, all the TV sets are up, internet connected and
we’re screening live sport. The opening hours are being extended so keep an eye out for those.
And on the subject of food and beverage, the SHAPE Club will be hosting a ‘Dinner in the Dark’
on 15 March; I eat often at the Club and I think the food is excellent so I’m not sure why they
need to eat in a blacked out room but apparently its all the rage these days (and it probably will
be dark by the time I finish the Half Marathon same day). My final advertisement this month
is to promote Henriette’s Trips and Tours; there are some great events planned over the coming
month to Amsterdam (15 March), Dover Castle and Canterbury (22 March) and Maastricht (29
March) and more to follow throughout the summer, more great chances to see everything Europe
has to offer.
My final notice is a personal favourite but huge congratulations to all the members of SHAPE Seals
Swimming Club after another highly successful season and especially to those who took part in the
European Championships in Eindhoven, you did SHAPE, your nations and your families proud.
Well, the Olympics may be over but I’m off south now for skiing in Austria and probably a bit of
accidental ski slope style, uncoordinated bumps and skeleton bob without the tea tray underneath!
I look forward to seeing you around SHAPE and if you have any ideas or concerns, please don’t
hesitate to call me on X4263 or e-mail me at [email protected]. Ta ta for now, I’m off to
brush my yard, getting some practice in for the GB Curling squad in South Korea!

MPD Open House (2014) Story by James David Scanlon, OF-5 (CAN-N)
NEWS
In February, the halls of the Bi-Strategic Command Military Partnerships Directorate (MPD) building were transformed into a cultural oasis as close to 30 NATO and Partner nations showcased
national dishes, wines, and costumes. This annual tradition dates
back to the beginning of NATO’s partnership programmes, which
mark their 20th anniversary this year—the Partnership for Peace
and Mediterranean Dialogue frameworks were launched in 1994.
An estimated 300 visitors, including General Phillip Breedlove,
SACEUR, enjoyed sampling cuisine from Asia, the Middle East,
North Africa, Europe, and North America. The Deputy Chief of Staff

for Military Partnerships, Major General Haluk ÇETINKAYA—who
reports to both SHAPE and HQ SACT—extended congratulations
to all of the contributors to this year’s MPD Open House, especially
the spouses and national colleagues who helped prepare food
or host tables. “I now understand why this extraordinary annual
event is so popular and I am already looking forward to next
year’s event,” he said. The open house is typically held during
the first few months of the new year and is voluntarily hosted by
NATO and resident Partner staff at MPD, with some non-resident
Partners also participating.

SACEUR Sports Swimming Competition by Cpl Laura Jones (RAF PTI GBR)
The SACEUR Sports swimming competition took place on Thursday 13 February at the SHAPE Pool. Teams from across NATO
were there to participate in a variety of disciplines and distances
in order to accumulate points for their final position.
Results Are Below
The event started with a 400m swim, so the more endurance
swimmers stepped forward. DEU took the lead followed closely
by USA. In no time at all the race was complete and we moved
onto the shorter sprint races. Each race had a male and female
straight final with 6 points for a win and 1 point for last place.
Butterfly, Breaststroke, Backstroke and Freestyle were swum
over a distance of 50M. Once again we were flying through the
events due to such a high standard of swimming ability.
The atmosphere was electric with all the spectators and team
members alike, cheering for their swimmer to reach the end first.
Many races were a close call and the staff had to resort to the
timekeepers to gain an accurate result.
After 50M, we moved onto 100M in all the disciplines, except
Butterfly. Many swimmers had now competed in two races or
more and were starting to feel fatigued. Therefore, a short break

allowed the staff to calculate the scores so far and not surprisingly
Team DEU and USA were separated by 1 point for first place. The
battle continued as the event progressed to the medley and relays.
First the men’s and women’s individual medley, followed by the
freestyle and the final event of the competition; the medley relay. DEU triumphed in all four
events with USA, Benelux
(FRA) and GBR taking second place respectively.
A further calculation of the
scores presented us with an
unsurprisingly clear winner,
DEU. Many congratulation
to their team, coaches and
supporters on a well deserved
victory.
All the teams displayed great
sportsmanship and showed
off their nations swimming
talent. It was a pleasure to
see so many people getting
in the spirit of the event and
contributing to the success of
the day.

Pens and Pocket Money! By Shape International School Alumni Organisation
On February 6th, 2014, the SHAPE International School handed
over the sum of €2.815,65, to Major Dave Leahy, C\hief of the
SHAPE Morale and Welfare branch and member of the SHAPE
Make-A-Wish committee. Since May of last year, the Belgian Primary and Secondary Sections, the Italian Section of the SHAPE
International School and its Alumni Organisation joined forces to
collect additional funds for the Make-A-Wish foundation. Each
section has contributed in their own special way to reach this
amazing sum. Under the leadership of Mrs Godfrin and Mrs

Pierquin , the students from the Belgian Sections sold thousands
of pens with the school logo, and collected sponsorship dues for
all those laps they ran during the 24 hrs Make-A-Wish event. The
young children in the Italian Section generously donated their
pocket money, while Mr Villatora, a retiring teacher, asked his
colleagues and friends to give the amassed retirement donations
as a present to the Make a Wish foundation. With a unique slogan
“every cent counts towards wishes of seriously ill children”, the
students ensured the success of all these initiatives. With more
new projects underway, the students are looking to break the
record once again in 2014 and see more dreams come true for
the children.

Tucked away at the end of the blue Paris hallway at the
SHAPE Health Care Facility is the child friendly Education & Developmental Intervention Services (EDIS).
The EDIS program was recently recognized by the Clinic
Commander, Colonel Donovan Green and Medical Director, Major Matthew Pflipsen for receiving a certificate
of the highest level of DOD Compliance standard and
MEDCOM regulatory requirements, as well as providing
quality services in the SHAPE footprint for EDIS programs from Chief of Staff, Col David Bitterman.
This small department has three full time professionals on staff; an Occupational Therapist, Maria Arango,
Speech Pathologist, Amy Nojaim and Early Childhood
Special Educator, Melissa Wiedel. EDIS provides services
for children from birth to 36-months old by educating
parents in the SHAPE and greater TriBorder community about child development and how
to teach their children. The goal of the
program is to support families and
ensure that all children in their reach
are developing as they should.
EDIS provides home-based services to
all SHAPE ID card holders. If a parent
has a concern or suspects that their child is
developing at a slower rate than they should, the parent
can call the EDIS office and schedule an appointment.
A typical appointment takes about 60 minutes. On an
initial appointment, the EDIS staff will do a screening,
which means that they will be asking you questions and
playing with your child while looking at the five areas of
development: communication, gross motor, fine motor,
problem-solving, and self-help. They are trying to see
how your child plays and interacts to see if your child is
meeting their developmental milestones. Then the EDIS
staff member will provide the parent with the results and
usually make recommendations to the parent on ways
that they can enhance their child’s learning at home.
If a child is not meeting their milestones, or concerns
are addressed by the parent then an additional visit
maybe
scheduled after the screening.
The EDIS program recognizes that being a
parent is one of the most rewarding and
challenging undertakings. Children
don’t come with an instruction manual. As children grow and move in and
out of different stages of development
parents often have questions “is this
typical?” or “should she/he be doing that?”
No question is too big or small.

Concert anyone?
By Mike Adubato (USA-Civ)
Actually the Globetrotters, who are known as the “clown
princes of basketball” and those wrestlers will be touring
Belgium soon. No, they tour separately, although it
would be fun to watch a two meter high 200 kilo colossus
of a man slam dunk a basketball. The Globetrotters will
be in Charleroi in early April, while the wrestlers who
step into the squared circle in Liege a month later.
B
eing the unofficial capital of Europe and, some say, the
heart of Europe, it is no wonder that many excellent
bands and musicians pass through Brussels.
If you’re new to Belgium or have yet to take in a concert in
country, you probably have no idea how to go about getting
tickets to take your children to see the annoying Justin
Beiber or the iconic and ageless Greek songstress,
Nana Mouskouri. If concerts are on your “to do”
list, then allow me to elucidate.
My favorite “go to” website for finding out who
is playing throughout the kingdom is www.
sherpa.be. Personally, I like rock music as well
as some of the older bands who were around
in the 1980s and 1990s, broke up and then
figured out that they needed more money, so got
back together for a farewell tour. If that is your
type of music, then you’ll love Sherpa. They also sell tickets for jazz,
blues, chanson, classic and opera. As
a matter of fact you can also get information and book tickets for some
sporting events such as the Harlem
Globetrotters and WWE Wrestling.
The most interesting concerts now
appearing on the Sherpa page,
in my humble opinion are the
Scottish indie rock band Franz
Ferdinand (March 7th), Belgian
singer and song writer Salvatore
Adamo, who was brought up in
nearby Jemappes and has sold over
80 million albums (April 6th), and Ennio Morricone. This Italian composer,
conductor, jack of all musical trades
has written music for over 500 movies and television shows. For me, his best music is for the
old “spaghetti western” movies starring Clint
Eastwood back in the 1960s. Classics! The
maestro will be up in Brussels on April 11th.
Another interesting website site is actually that
of a department store. Fnac is the store and www.
fnac.be is the website. Unlike Sherpa, this one is
not available in English. That shouldn’t be too much of
a problem though; at the top right of the page just clicking
“ticketing” and you will be directed to another page known
as “spectacles”. On the left hand side there is a section “tous
les spectacles” which you can pretty much figure out.
One of the concerts that falls under my aforementioned category of bands from the 1980s is that of Morten Harket. The Norwegian was the front man for the very
successful band known as A-ha. The forever young
Mr. Harket will be performing May 12th in Leuven.
Last but not least is a site for the young and trendy
– and me! The venue known as Ancienne Belgique,
located not too far from Brussels’ Grand Place, has
its own website and that is www.abconcerts.be. It
is also in English.
There are three different concert halls located within the building and shows go on constantly ranging
from up and coming obscure bands to established
stars. Just to whet your appetite, you can catch Boy
George (from 80’s band Culture Club) on April 8th,
Ziggy Marley on April 15th and legendary punk rockers
Bad Religion on the last day of May.
These three websites should cover all of your concert
needs.

From SHAPE, With Love:
A Secret Hideaway
I
By Judy Rae Merhar (USA-Civ)
’m guilty of keeping a secret. I have a favorite local hideaway. A place that never fails to make me feel valued and
welcome. A place where I go to be reminded of how wonderful the simplicity of rural life is. This place happens to be
off the beaten path, but only minutes from the front gate of
SHAPE. If you’re looking for a local hideout that isn’t pretentious and comes with heartfelt smiles and friendly service,
read on.
A silver lining to not owning a GPS is stumbling upon accidental gems, in this case, Café des Etangs. I’m not certain
if I was charmed more by the bar and its location, or by the
humble proprietors, Michel and Natalie. Like the owners,
the structure exudes warmth and welcome. The café’s name
hints at the surroundings, “etangs” translates to “pond” in
English. The terrace outside offers a beautiful view and a dozen tables overlooking
the interconnecting ponds of St. Denis.
The patrons are varied. It’s not unlikely
to find yourself sitting alongside fisherman downing a Juplier before they head
back to catch their dinner, their numerous
tents dotted around the lake’s perimeter.
On several occasions, especially Sundays,
I’ve found myself in the company of senior
citizens passing time with a deck of cards,
and one day after hiking around St. Denis
we were surrounded by celebrities and paparazzi! Our visit was at the same time a
film crew was shooting
a wedding scene for a
popular Belgian reality
TV series. The bride
was sitting alongside
her parents in a beautifully decorated horse
drawn carriage. It was
amusing to watch the
TV crew wait for their
instructions to proceed
down the hill to the
Abbaye of St. Denis.
The groom along with
a procession of people
in ornate French costumes were waiting to
welcome the bride and
her parents. To pass time, the driver
of the carriage enjoyed small glasses of
cold beer while he waited in the hot sun.
Dave and I, along with Natalie and Michel, were the only people there to witness this unique event.
dart board are set up, an added
touch, but an important indication, it tells visitors like me, kids
are welcome too!
Two important elements tucked
in a corner provide insight into
one of the owners, Michel. The
piano is a hint to his love for music. He’s been the guitarist for a local band called the Flying
Cervelazzz for nearly 30 years. I’ve seen them perform both
at the Mons and Jurbise Beer Fests. His casual attire for the
performances stayed true to his personality- dark jeans, boots,
and a collared button down dress shirt. On both occasions
his petite smiling wife Natalie was there greeting family and
friends. At both concerts, I witnessed the crowd
come alive as they watched and listened to this
local institution. They have a following, including
the Merhar family!
The second hint of Michel’s interest sits on the
piano, a statue of a Gilles. If you haven’t seen a
Gilles, you will want to mark your calendar for
March 2-4. Unique to Belgium, they are honorable participants of the carnival of Binche; which
dates back to the 14th century. Historically they
are male, natives, and between 3-60 years old.
Their purpose is to entertain during the days leading up to Ash Wednesday. They are all dressed
in colorful attire with a signature wax mask and
wooden shoes. Their heads are topped with tiny
white caps that tie around their chin. On the last
day of carnival (also known
as Fat Tuesday/Mardi Gras)
they dance through town
with wooden sticks in hopes
of scaring off evil spirits.
Afterwards, the Gilles can
be seen carrying baskets
filled with oranges that are
thrown into the crowds.
It’s considered good luck to
catch an orange thrown by
a Gilles. The fact Café des
Etangs happens to be owned
by a guitar playing Gille
makes me think I’m already
lucky. No oranges required.

Entering the café you’re most likely
greeted by Michel or Natalie because
they live over the bar. Their guests feel
the genuine warmth that can only come
from being in someone’s home. The
space is dimly lit and lined with wooden
tables and chairs with a small sun room
overlooking a gated garden area. Our
family tends to sit towards the back of
the café listening to the tunes of classic

A Spot of Lunch Music Anybody?
S
HAPE’s most recent Lunchtime Concert took
place in the East Chapel of the Chaplaincy
Centre on the 21st of February. The concert
lived up to its usual eclectic mix of musicians and
singers from the community performing to around
150 grateful pairs of ears.
The hosts, Angela Hannaford and Michelle Howarth who are both GBR dependents, have organised these monthly events for almost a year, and
are now looking forward to their first anniversary.
Their aims, to provide the SHAPE community
with an opportunity to relax during a lunch break
and enjoy a programme of live music. Varying
in style and genres, all the pieces played are performed by accomplished musicians who would not
ordinarily perform in public.

finished off with a duet together.
From this humble beginning, these concerts
have since featured bagpipes, clarinet, flute,
guitar, piano, piccolo, recorder, trumpet,
violin and vocals. There have been solo,
duet and trio performances representing
Bulgaria, Germany, Lithuania, Slovenia,
Poland, United Kingdom and United States
of America. Members of the SHAPE International Community Choir also performed
at the latest concert in February; a genuinely multi-national military/civilian-mixed
organisation. All this reflects the true representation of the different nationalities
participating in these shows.
These performances have helped bring the
SHAPE community together to celebrate
the gift of music of the adult and not so
adult. They also promote the development

of music and our youth by offering a platform to talented high school and college
students; Rebekka Döding (DEU), James Stewart (GBR), and

Audiences are very appreciative of the talent of their fellow
Shapiens, as well as the diversity that the concert programmes
offer. Friendships have formed between the musicians, previ-

The concerts offer an ideal platform for instrumentalists and
singers of all nationalities to share with audiences, music that
is rich in tradition, culture and history. From Johann Sebastian Bach to Alan Bullard, from traditional folk to evergreens,
from medieval to 21st century.
Launched in April 2013, the first recital featured vocal solos
from an NMR no less, Air Commodore Ian Stewart (GBR – AF),
and Anna Szafranowska (POL – Civ). Angela played a solo
baroque piece on the recorder (also known to many nationalities as the block or ‘fipple’ flute), and Michelle showcased a

found themselves now sharing the stage
together. The same can be said for the
regular audience members as they have

with their concert objectives, and would
like to hear from any musicians who
would be interested in performing at one
of the concerts. Either can be contacted by

Concerts remain dependant on the availability of musicians and the attendance by
the SHAPE community. The concerts last
for approximately 45 minutes from 1215
hours and are free to all Shapiens. Please
support these events and help them to
continue promoting live music.
The next concert is scheduled for 21st
March 2014, 1215 – 1300 hours in the

hoping that there will be local charity representation. Further information can be

Seven by SHAPE
Gender Advisor to

S
o you’ve heard about ‘Seven’ coming to SHAPE but
not sure what it means? Seen the posters, the last
Community Life cover, heard people talking but still
not sure if it is for you? Let me tell you more about it and
hopefully show you why you need to be there!
Seven is a documentary play based on the real life stories
of seven women’s rights activists from Nigeria, Afghanistan, Guatemala, Russia, Pakistan, Northern Ireland
and Cambodia.
The play was created by seven playwrights, Paula Cizmar,
Catherine Filloux, Gail Kriegel, Carol K.Mack, Ruth
Margraff, Anna Deveare Smith and Susan Yankowitz,
from interviews they conducted in 2007 with the women.
In 2008 Hedda Krausz Sjögren, the award-winning
Swedish playwright, actor and producer initiated the
innovative tour and production concept for Seven. The
idea was to take the play around the world and have decision makers and other
high profile people read
the seven roles. The
readers being relevant
to the location where
the performance was
taking place. Over the
last 6 years more than
500 politicians, actors
and activists have read
a role in Seven, reaching
over 15,000 people in 11
countries.
Now Seven is coming to
SHAPE and for the first
time all seven parts will
be read by high ranking
military officers.

SHAPE Hockey Team Scores in Bavaria
O
By Chris Pettypiece (CAN Civ, CAN School)
n Thursday, February 20 , after a nearly 11 hour drive,
the SHAPE Hockey Team hit the ice for our first of five
games in the 22nd Annual Armed Forces Alpine Classic
hockey tournament in Garmisch, Germany. This is a tournament that the SHAPE Shields had been eagerly awaiting,
not only for the high-quality competition, but
for the fantastic venue.
th
The team came out flying, backed by
some strong goaltending, and started off with a 4-0 shut-out against
the KMC Eagles. At 2200 hrs, the
Shields suited up again for our second of the night against Bayern 1.
We played hard, with very strong

games put in by William Handfield-Jones and Jason Giroux,
but in the end were left with a
7-3 loss. As it turned out, this
group from Bayern would be
the eventual champions of the
tournament.
German beer followed by a bit
of sleep did us some good, as we
took to the ice Friday morning to
collect two more wins. The first
game was a 3-1 win over a strong
team from Geilenkirchen, folwMarkus Klauss makes another beautiful move to
slide one in.

lowed by another 4-0 shut-out victory
over the team from Stuttgart. Team
captain Chris Charron was dominant
in this game, launching shot after shot
at the opposing goalie.
SHAPE was then positioned to play
their first playoff game on the outdoor rink, with the mountains as the
backdrop. The weather, however, had
other plans, and due to rain, the game
was pushed to the morning-- indoors.
This turned out to be a VERY early
morning game, and on the heels of
Team Canada’s semi-final win over
the USA in Olympic hockey. A tired
bunch pulled on the cold and wet gear for what
turned out to be quite a rough and tough game.
Despite the score, it was yet another great defensive performance by the whole team against
a powerhouse opponent. In the end, it was
not to be, so following breakfast, most of the
team headed home to get ready for what was
surely going to be a great hockey game -- Sunday’s Gold medal matchup between Canada
and Sweden.
This tournament, which takes place every
February down in Bavaria, drew 14 teams
this year. We did ourselves proud overall by
winning three of our five games.

Sport
I
don’t know about you but I had a fantastic sporting February.
Actually I’ve just returned from a week over in the south of
Wales visiting my daughter and took advantage of the fact
that there were several games
going on while I was over there.
I saw some football and rugby,
and even managed to meet up
with an ex-Shapian friend.
Arriving on a Monday in Cardiff,
I missed the weekend’s games
but was fortunate enough to
catch one the next day in the city
of Newport, which is located very
close to the English border. It
also happens to be the city where
this year’s NATO Summit will
take place (in early September).
Newport County FC, a team in
League Two of the English football league system, hosted
Oxford United at Rodney Parade, a stadium just across the
River Usk from the downtown area. This stadium is well
used as it also hosts a couple of rugby teams – Newport RFC
and Newport Gwent Dragons.
The weather hasn’t been kind to this part of the country
recently. The Oxford game was originally scheduled to
be played on New Year’s Day but the field was practically
underwater then and has been in bad shape ever since. It
was only hours before kick-off that the referee decided that
this game could go on. This was the
first of five home games because the
team has a lot of games in hand.
Like many football teams around
Europe, Newport County has gone
through a bad patch, getting into
financial difficulties and losing their
Football League status some years
ago. When the team was “reborn”
back in 1989, they had to start at
the very bottom of the football pyramid and were also evicted from
their home ground. They ended up

playing their “home” games over 100 kilometers from Newport and thus adopted
the nickname The Exiles.
Last year however the team was promoted
from the Conference to League Two and
have been performing very well as of late.
Having a millionaire chairman doesn’t really hurt either. Les Scadding, an Englishman who had been living in Newport for
many years doing a menial job with very
little pay, won the EuroMillions five years
ago and has helped the club out a bit. I was told
that he has invested over 20 million pounds
(24 million Euros) into the team already.
Now that is a real fan!
On this chilly Welsh evening the team
started off sluggishly and went behind but
in the end was able to come away with
a 3-2 victory and the all important vital
three points. At the time of writing this,
The Exiles are in eighth place, just one out
of the play-off spot but as I mentioned, they do
have some games in hand. It was an experience to
see the Exiles return home.
Wednesday night was a night in the pub watching ten
man Arsenal struggle and lose against Bayern Munich
in the Champions League, but the next night I was back
out there sitting in another stadium.
rPre-game festivities at the Millennium stadium.
Sport
later, so all will have been sorted by the time you read this.
On the Friday I did something completely different. I entered
the largest stadium in Wales, the Millennium Stadium to catch
not a football game but a rugby game. The French national
team was in town for their clash against Wales in Six Nations
action. This was only my second ever professional rugby game.
As a matter of fact, I only “discovered” the game last September
in Cardiff when I accidentally found Cardiff Arms Park, home
of the Cardiff Blues. After that game, I was hooked.
rScrum and get it!
The first professional football team that I ever saw play live
in Europe, back when my hair lacked hints of gray, was SSC
Napoli when I was a soldier living in southern Italy. Well I
renewed my acquaintance with Gli Azzurri when they came
to the Liberty Stadium in Swansea to take on Swansea City
in Europa League action. The stadium that opened back in
2005 is Wales’ third largest, after the Millennium Stadium and
Cardiff City Stadium. The Swans have only been playing in
the Premier League for a couple of seasons and earned their
right to play in the Europa League by winning the League
Cup final last season.
With Napoli in town, the travelling fans turned the city of
Swansea into a sea of Italian blue. Both sets of fans mixed
outside the stadium, enjoying beer and banter before the
kick-off on the road to (hopefully) the final in Torino, Italy
in May. The atmosphere was very friendly, unlike the away
leg is expected to be.
The Swans started attacking immediately and as the game
progressed they showed that
they were the better team on
the night; however they were not
good enough to put the ball into
the back of the net. Although
there were exciting moments
produced by both teams, all
the teams had to show for their
efforts at the end of it all was
the 0-0 score line. The Italians
didn’t get that vital away goal
and Swansea has no lead to take
to bella Napoli with them. The
second leg will be played a week rCardiff City attack.
rThat’s the ticket!
As I left the day before for Swansea, I ran into many Frenchmen arriving at the train station as they prepared for the
fun, festivities and rugby. Being in Cardiff was like being at
a fun fair. There was street music, games and even free stuff
like the rugby “stress” ball that I was given which advertised
the Cardiff Airport. The French fans were really great. They
were decked out in their national colors and some even wore
berets, false moustaches and strings of garlic around their
necks to support the British stereotype of them. There were
more French flags than Welsh ones on the streets.
I arrived at the stadium and then made my way to the press
room a couple of hours before the game was to begin. I always
like to arrive as early as possible and when in the press room,
speak to the other journalists about the upcoming game and
how both teams are expected to
perform. Since I am quite new to
rugby, this was very important to
me in order to get a better understanding of what I was about to
see. I had a few chats with journalists from both countries, read the
program, the Welsh RFU media
guide and studied the team sheet.
I was ready.
All that I was expecting was a game
and not the outstanding pre-game
entertainment. After I found my
seat, I settled in and listened to the
Welsh men’s choir on the field singing a medley of Tom Jones songs
as the crowd joined in with the
choruses of “Why, Why, Why Delilah” and “What’s New Pussycat” in
anticipation of what was to come.
After a military band played and
the players finished their warmups, they disappeared back into
the dressing room and the lights

within the stadium dimmed as a multi-colored, frenzied light
show began to get the crowd charged up. Flames shot up
from all sides of the field and the players emerged and lined
up on the field. The noise was deafening. After the national
anthems were sung and the national flags were removed from
the battlefield, it was game time.
The French team was thus far undefeated in Six Nations,
having won both of their previous games against England and
Italy. Wales had dropped one game, losing badly to Ireland
the week before. At the end of the game and the end of the
weekend’s play, four of the six teams were equal with two
wins and a loss.
The Welsh team dominated the game behind the boot of Leigh
Halfpenny, who
kicked 17 points,
and a couple of tries
from George North
and Sam Warburton. France could
only score on a couple of penalty kicks
converted by Jules
Plisson and Jean
Marc Doussain as
the game ended 276. I had such a great
time at the game rWho ate all the pie??
that I cannot wait
until March 15th when I’ll be at the Stade de France in Paris to see France and
Ireland square off. This could even decide
the overall winner of the tournament.
My last full day in Cardiff was the next
day, Saturday and I had to get up at a
decent hour so that I could meet Daz Carter, a friend and former SHAPE member
who worked in the UK NMR registry until
last year when he retired from the Royal
Air Force and returned to Wales after a
22 year career.
My Welsh week would end with a Premiership game – Cardiff City vs. Hull
City. Both teams have not been doing
well so desperately needed to collect all
three points in their fight to avoid being
relegated at the end of the season.
birds and has played in blue since 1908. For an investment
package from his home country, Mr. Tan agreed to change the
team’s uniforms from blue and white to red and black. Red is
a lucky color in Asia, he said. Obviously Tan the man must
not know that Wales isn’t in Asia. The bluebird on the team
crest was also replaced with a dragon. He has no respect for
tradition if he feels that he can take an institution that is over
100 years old and change it on a whim.
But I digress. We finished our beers and walked another 10
minutes before we were at the stadium, scanned our tickets
and went through the turnstiles. Before grabbing our seats it
was time for one last beer
topped off with a hamburger or, as the British
call them, beef burgers.
This must win game
for the red Bluebirds
couldn’t have come out
any worse than it did.
Although they did the
lion’s share of the attacking into the Tiger’s
half, it was the visitors
who scored after just 18
minutes. They had one
chance, one goal. Just before the
half time whistle Hull was up 2-0
and by the time the referee blew
at the end of the 90 minutes the
score was 4-0. So it wouldn’t be
out of line to say that Cardiff City
was mauled by the Tigers. My prediction is that Cardiff’s new coach,
Norwegian man Ole Gunnar Solskjær, will soon be unemployed.
The team is one point from being
in last place.
To make ourselves feel better we
headed back downtown and enjoyed a few more beers. It’s not
easy supporting a football team,
even for one day!
And so that ended my Welsh
sporting adventure – five days,
four games. Next on my calendar is a short trip to Slovakia
for a couple of Slovan Bratislava
games; first the ice hockey team
and the next day the football
team. Watch this space!
We met at the train station and four of

the way, finding a pub and enjoying a few pints of one of the
local brews. Mine was the Brains IPA, which was very smooth

sets of fans. The Hull fans were very nice and I had a couple
interesting conversations with these Englishmen and women.

My Experience as a Toastmaster
W
hen I accepted a friend’s invitation
to attend a SHAPE Toastmasters
club meeting, I was pleasantly
surprised to enter a non-pressure atmosphere with friendly and joyful people
of different ages and from dissimilar
cultural backgrounds, ready to support
my goal, that of improving my English
linguistic skills.
I remained a guest for a while and during
that time I volunteered for various roles,
such as timer, joke master and ‘table topic’
speaker. The latter, means improvised

improvement. All my contributions have
given me the opportunity to develop my
team working skills, which are of great
importance for the career development.
Another unique feature, which I’ve developed beyond the formal context, is the
strong and respectful friendship between
club members.
Speech Contests, a unique learning
experience.
Toastmasters all over the world participate in speech contests every autumn and
spring. This is a unique opportunity for

a spontaneous speech, lasting between 1

front of an easygoing audience. Each task
that I accepted in these learn-by-doing

than I thought, I was able to stand up
and speak about various topics, in front
of an audience and in a foreign language.

clubs are divided into 4 Areas, the latter
forming Division Belgium. In the past,
I’ve had the pleasure and honour of being
a speech contestant on Club and Area

experience.
Why not join Toastmasters?
With the desire to become a Toastmaster
member, came also my first written and
oral speech project, called the ‘ice breaker’. This was the moment when I realised
that my basic foundation in public speaking was created. Performing the role as
the meeting’s Toastmaster (master of ceremonies) taught me how to coordinate and
conduct a meeting in a timely manner.

of the Toastmasters programme’s success
plan, proved to be a valuable method for

Price: €50adults; €35 under age 26 w/Eur. ID
The Palace of Versailles, once residence of French
Royalty, is now a world famous Chateau included
in UNESCO’s World Heritage List for the past 30

French art and architecture. SHAPE Travel Group’s
visit to this beautiful palace and gardens is not to be
missed. Our self-guided tour will begin in the gardens
where the visitor makes his way past stunning topiary,
fountains and mazes. We then visit the chateau to
admire its wonderful interior including the famous
Hall of Mirrors. For lunch our group can either eat
in the picnic areas adjacent to the gardens or dine
at the Café d’Orléons which provides ready-made
meals and a take-away menu. In the afternoon we
will then enter the private estate and hamlet of King

We plan a full day at the Chateau de Versailles and
with so much to see and do the day will pass very

Tongeren & the Antiques Market
Sunday, June 1
Price: €25
Tongeren, the oldest town in Belgium, was founded
in 15 BC as a base and supply station for the Roman troops in the Rhine region. Tongeren is a town
where history still lives and breathes, but it is also a
town with a young, dynamic heart. Today, Tongeren
is best known for antiques! Every Sunday morning, the biggest antiques and collectibles market
of the Benelux takes place on the cattle market in
Tongeren. Over 30 years old now, it attracts many
international visitors from countries like the Netherlands, Germany and France. On the first Sunday of
the month, about forty antique shops are also open
as well as the regular 350 stallholders where they
expose their best merchandise. We have to be there
early because there is a better chance that you can
buy nostalgic valuable objects for a good price. The
market begins at 6am so we will depart in time to get
us there at the start. Come join us and bring back
a piece of Europe with you! You can take anything
back that fits in the bus!
Fontainebleau Palace
Thursday, June 5
Price: €65
The Château Vaux le Vicomte was a small castle bought by Nicolas Fouquet, financial advisor
to King Louis XIV, in 1641 and transformed into
a masterpiece by uniting 3 different crafts. It was
abandoned for about 30 years and in disrepair until
1875 when Mr Alfred Sommier bought and restored
it. His descendants continue this effort. The Château
de Fontainebleau can proudly claim to have been a
sovereign residence for eight centuries. Capétiens,
Valois, Bourbons, Bonaparte and Orléans, all members of French ruling dynasties, have lived within
these walls. This sprawling palace is a veritable
showcase of French architecture from the 12th to
the 19th century. Trip price includes entry to both
palaces: Vicomte at 1100 and Fountainbleau at 1400
plus quided tour of Vicomte and coach.
