Y Ready, Set, READ!
Read the passage. Then answer the questions.
You would think that the Civil War would have been enough to occupy
Americans in the 1860s. Huge armies were fighting. Factories were busy
producing uniforms, bullets, guns, wagons, and ships. But all the while,
two “armies” of men were part of another large national project. They were
building a railroad that would link the two coasts.
At that time, railroads from the East reached only to Nebraska. One
army of workers started from there. A second began in California. The race
to meet up was on. Thousands of men laid track as fast as they could. Irish
immigrants, free blacks, and Chinese workers labored side by side. By 1869,
their grueling job was done. The tracks from the East met the tracks from the
West in Utah. It had taken only seven years. Telegraph lines buzzed with the
remarkable news. The entire continent now could be crossed by rail!
Constructing a transcontinental railroad through rough terrain and
blasting tunnels through mountains was backbreaking work. Meeting that
challenge was the engineering achievement of the century.
