Houston Society of Mayflower Descendants Scholarship - 2016
Purpose:
The Houston Society of Mayflower Descendants (HSOMD) Scholarship has been established to
assist deserving descendants of SOMD members in acquiring a higher education, with a view to
their becoming better prepared for life and citizenship.
In the spirit of the Mayflower settlers seeking to better themselves by moving to a new and
uncharted world, special consideration will be given to applicants who have demonstrated
commitment to bettering themselves and who will likely benefit from a scholarship.
To Whom Given:
1.
A Graduating High School Senior who will be accepted for enrollment in an accredited
institution of higher learning either in Texas or out-of-state (college, university, community
college). [The graduate may hold a Junior Mayflower membership number or a parent,
grandparent or a family member in the direct Mayflower line with appropriate proof of the
relationship, must hold a member in the General Society of Mayflower Descendants
(GSOMD) and/or the Texas Society of Mayflower Descendants (TSOMD)].
2.
Amount: A $1,620 award to be paid directly to the college, university, or community
college in which the graduating senior student has been accepted for enrollment. The
award will go to assist the student’s payment for tuition and books only.
3.
If a student selected for the scholarship fails to enter a school of higher learning; then (he
or she) will forfeit the scholarship. Then the scholarship would be awarded to the runner
up who was chosen by the Houston Mayflower Scholarship Selection Committee.
Eligibility For Scholarship Criteria: What a student needs to do to qualify.
1.
Be a U.S. Citizen with copy of: Birth Certificate or Passport.
2.
You or parent/grandparent who is a member of the General Society of Mayflower
Descendants (GSOMD) and/or the Texas Society of Mayflower Descendants (TSOMD).
Name and Number of GSOMD and/or TSOMD must be provided.
3.
Be a resident of the State of Texas and show proof of residence.
4.
Provide a copy of SAT or ACT scores. No minimum is required.
5.
Provide a copy of original GPA Record/Transcript). No minimum is required.
6.
Properly complete and submit Application Form. (See Attachment #1).
Applicant Guidelines to Follow: “A Must Do List for Student Applicants”
What each Applicant Must Follow in Completing Application Forms:
1.
Submit documentation for information noted on eligibility criteria-birth certificate and
GPA/Grades/SAT/ACT scores. If home schooled, submit copies of achievement scores.
2.
Submit application (Attachment #1) by December 31, (of the current year). If there are
delays in waiting for SAT/ACT scores, submit once they are received.
3.
Distribute recommendation forms to any CORE teachers (Math, Science, Social Studies or
English). (See Attachment 2)
4.
Request any CORE Teachers (Math, Science, Social Studies or English) to give you a
sample of your graded homework, project or writing assignment.
5.
Submit two completed Character Recommendation forms completed by non-family
members. (See Attachment 3).
6.
Write an essay of 300-600 words entitled: (Choose One Topic Only)




“What Does My Mayflower Ancestry Mean to Me?”
“How Does the Signed Document ‘Mayflower Compact’ Impact my Life
Today?”
“How Did the Role of Religion Work for the Mayflower Colony?”
“What Mayflower Pilgrim Do You Best Identify With and Why?”
7.
If selected as a finalist, the applicant may be interviewed by the Houston Mayflower
Scholarship Selection Committee in person or by phone or skype.
8.
Submit by December 31 the entire application packet (in one package) postmarked
by deadline date by mail. ACT/SAT scores will be accepted after this date. All items
requested should be sent to the following Houston Society of Mayflower Descendants

No copies of photos of applicant are to be sent in packet.

Selection Process
Properly completed forms from all applicants will be evaluated by the Selection Committee. The
Selection Committee will select the year’s winner by March 1.
Only applications completed correctly and submitted in one package by December 31 deadline
will be considered. Incorrect applications are discarded and no records are returned. Scholarships
are awarded regardless of race, religion, sex, or national origin. Personal photographs must not be
submitted. The Selection Committee will notify the Scholarship Chairman of the winner. The
winner of the scholarship will be notified no later than March 10th by the Houston Society of
Mayflower Descendants (HSOMD) Scholarship Chairman.
Evaluation Criteria: (Based on 100 point as shown below)
5 Points-Properly Completed Application
10 Points-Academic Recommendation from a CORE Teacher (Math, Science, Social Studies or
English)
10 Points-Character Reference from non-family members
Up to 15 Points-based on SAT or ACT
Up to 10 Points-GPA – based on 4 point scale
10 Points-Awards/Honors/Good Citizenship Awards
10 Points-Community Service (Example, Church, Volunteer Work, Scouting, 4-H, Etc.)
30 Points-Essay: The Essay must be TYPED, double spaced, using 12 point type.
Total: 100 Points

SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT
In April 2015, the Houston Society of Mayflower Descendants will award a $1,620 scholarship to a
qualified high school senior accepted at an accredited school of higher learning (college,
university, or community college). The funds will be sent to the school in which the student will
enroll to be used for tuition and books only.
For students applying for the scholarship, the following criteria will be as follows:
Be a US Citizen
Himself/herself/parent/grandparent be a member of the GSOMD and/or TSOMD
Consideration of scores on the SAT or ACT
Be a resident of the state of Texas
Consideration on GPA (based on a 4.0 scale)
Properly complete and submit the application form
Further, all members are encouraged to give names of students, who are known, to the colony governor
so that those students will have an opportunity to apply.
