Sesquicentennial of the Emancipation Proclamation

2013 commemorates President Abraham Lincoln’s issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation
Executive Order in 1863. Coinciding with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday and
Black History Month, the Sesquicentennial commemorates historical and contemporary
national issues related to the meaning of freedom and equality.
