Water in Seattle Public Schools:
There has been a lot of media
coverage around lead in the water
in schools. The Seattle Public
Schools considers student health
and safety as a top priority. Over
the last several years we have
adopted and implemented a set of
rigorous standards which have set
nationally recognized standards
for safe drinking water quality in
public schools. The program was
established by the School Board,
which adopted a Drinking Water
Policy in 2004. It includes periodic
testing of each drinking water
source in each school, coupled
with reporting of the results on
the District website.

McGilvra’s 7th Annual
Poetry and Art Challenge
Submitted by Danae Powers
The poem for our challenge this
year is Jabberwocky by Lewis
Carroll. Students received a copy of
the poem at school this week. You
can also find it online at
http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poe
ms-and-poets/poems/detail/42916
To participate in this year’s poem
challenge, students need to
memorize the poem and create a
piece of art representing one of
the creatures in the poem (please
see requirements below).
Poem Memorization
You will need to memorize the
poem and recite it at school to Ms.
Powers, Ms. Slye, Miss Julia or Ms.
Burgess. You can try more than
one time. You must successfully
recite the poem during the week of
May 2 - 6.
Celebration
All students who successfully
memorize the poem and turn in
their artwork by May 6th will be
invited to a special celebration.

Artwork - Requirements
You will create a piece of art to
represent at least one creature in
the poem: the Jabberwock, a slithy
tove, a borogove, a mome rath, the
Jubjub bird, or the Bandersnatch.
Poetry – April is National
Poetry Month!
In the library we have been
celebrating National Poetry Month.
Last week students participated in
Poem in Your Pocket Day. Every
student selected a poem and
started the day with that poem in a
pocket. Some students kept that
poem for the entire day. Others
traded throughout the day. We all
shared our poems. It was a great
way to expose students to a wide
range of poetry. We are ending the
month with the poem Jabberwocky
by Lewis Carroll. This is our poem
for McGilvra’s 7th Annual Poetry
and Art Challenge.
Happy Reading!

McGilvra Walks for Water
Submitted by Danae Powers
Submitted by Danae Powers
My name is Selma Powers and I am
currently an eighth grade student
at Washington Middle School. I am
a McGilvra alum and my mom is
your school librarian. I am
currently on the middle school
board for Water 1st, a nonprofit
organization that helps get safe,
clean water to people in developing
countries. I know at McGilvra
students have learned about Water
1st and are doing a school Walk for
Water event. On May 15th, I will
be participating in an event at
Seattle Center called Carry 5 Walk
for Water. The event is a 5k where
people carry water while walking,
like many people do every day in
these impoverished
communities. This is similar to
what McGilvra students will do at
school on May 6th. The purpose of
the Carry 5 event is to raise money
to support clean water projects so
that people (mostly women and
girls) do not have to spend hours
each day walking for water. With
better access to clean water, more
girls will be able to go to school and
get an education.
I am offering an afternoon or
evening of babysitting in exchange
for a donation to my Carry 5
fundraising page. You can access
my fundraising page at
https://my.water1st.org/fundraise?

babysitting, please call or text me
at 206-437-6938.
Thank you!

Kids' Time Registration for
Spring Session Now Open
Submitted by Ginger Plaster
Student Council is helping to
support global learning about the
need for clean water in our
world. We will be simulating an
activity offered to the greater
Seattle community called Walk for
Water. In order to engage students
in this learning during their school
day, we need all families to collect
and drop off milk jugs, juice jugs or
5 gallon plastic cat litter containers
and bring them to the library by
APRIL 29th. Please rinse them
clean and send them to school with
your child any time before April
29th. We are hoping to collect
about 2 jugs per child or about 600
jugs total. McGilvra students will
walk for water at school on Friday,
May 6th.
If you or your child would like to
sign up for the greater community
event, please follow this link to
McGilvra’s team page.
