District Highlights May 2016 Message from the Superintendent May 5 SJF SPRING FLING May 6 It has been a busy and exciting time in our schools. May 16 SJF SPRING CONCERT May 19 NJ SPRING CONCERT I want to highlight some of the exciting things happening at Mildred Hall School lately. This past month, Mildred Hall won Staples Canada’s “Superpower your School” Contest, a nationwide sustainability contest. The school will receive $25,000 to be spent on new technology, which will create many exciting new opportunities in the school. MHS was also honoured with a visit from the Hon- May 23 VICTORIA DAY - NO SCHOOL ourable Navdeep Bains, Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development as well as The Minister of Education, Culture and Employment Alfred Moses. Lucky MHS students got the chance to ask Minister Bains May 26 MHS FINE ARTS NIGHT + MURAL UNVEILING May 26-27 RLN SCHOOL MUSICAL May 27-28 questions about Canadian politics and why he chose to be a Minister. Last but not least, Mildred Hall will soon be unveiling a new mural on May 26. The 288 square foot piece was painted by YK1’s very own Sarah Bradfield, and MHS students gave suggestions on what they wanted the mural to represent. The mural will reflect the four seasons and be representative of traditional teaching. Each at risk student is assigned a student support staff person, and they organize weekly check-ins with the student to ensure they are on track. For those students that need counselling or suffer from addictions, weekly visits from Yellowknife Health & Social Services are organized for the student. Programs such as these are very important, as it is a priority at all our schools to tailor our programming to meet the diverse needs of our students. The YK1 School Board has developed their three year strategic plan and Central Office staff have developed strategies and measures to address the specific initiatives of the plan. Once the Board approves their plan we will highlight it on our website.
