SJF SPRING FLING
May 6
It has been a busy and exciting time in our schools. During April, many of our
students participated in the junior and senior super soccer competitions. Our
athletes worked hard and played fair and we came away with several banners.

The Territorial Skills Competition also took place in April, with 17 SJF students
participating in the full day competition. Thank you to all the staff and volunteers who help organize and run these events, as it is a lot of work and greatly
appreciated.

I want to highlight some of the exciting things happening at Mildred Hall School
lately. This past month, Mildred Hall won Staples Canada’s “Superpower your
School” Contest, a nationwide sustainability contest. The school will receive
$25,000 to be spent on new technology, which will create many exciting new
opportunities in the school. MHS was also honoured with a visit from the Hon-

questions about Canadian politics and why he chose to be a Minister. Last but
not least, Mildred Hall will soon be unveiling a new mural on May 26. The 288
square foot piece was painted by YK1’s very own Sarah Bradfield, and MHS
students gave suggestions on what they wanted the mural to represent. The
mural will reflect the four seasons and be representative of traditional teaching.

I also want to acknowledge the success of Sir John
Franklin High school’s At Risk Student program
that provides support and resources for students
who are struggling in school, socially or at home.
Each at risk student is assigned a student support
staff person, and they organize weekly check-ins
with the student to ensure they are on track. For
those students that need counselling or suffer from
addictions, weekly visits from Yellowknife
Health & Social Services are organized
for the student. Programs such as these
are very important, as it is a priority at all
our schools to tailor our programming to
meet the diverse needs of our students.
The YK1 School Board has developed
their three year strategic plan and Central
Office staff have developed strategies
and measures to address the specific
initiatives of the plan. Once the Board
approves their plan we will highlight it on
our website.

Every year Staples Canada awards 10 publically-funded schools
across Canada with $25,000 to be spent on new technology.
The schools had to demonstrate initiatives they had
implemented to help save the planet. Mildred Hall School was
selected because of their outstanding sustainability efforts, which
include recycling, composting and working on their garden. This
is the first time a school from the Northwest Territories has won a
nationwide sustainability contest.
