Green Committee The Green Committee celebrated the third Green Flag award. We had a whole school assembly where a slide show highlighted the events that were carried out to gain the third Green Flag. A huge congratulations to the Mount Anville Community and the Green Committee. I believe that growing vegetables will be one of the new projects that will be steered by the Green Committee. Library Committee Marita Conlon McKenna visited the 5th and 6th class pupils on 24th October. The girls really enjoyed talking with Marita and were fascinated at the real-life situations which helped to inspire her in writing her books. Marita is a past pupil of Mount Anville Schools. Each girl received a signed bookmark from Marita, which I am sure they will treasure. Don Conroy visited 1st and 2nd classes on 6th November, which was a great success. Don drew animations of characters from some of his books on A3 posters for each class, which are now proudly displayed in the classrooms. He also signed and donated three of his books to the school library. The feedback amongst students and staff has been marvellous – meeting a real author, having already seen and read their books in the library, has been very meaningful for the children. We are looking forward to a visit from award winning children’s author Benji Bennett who is coming to visit us on Wednesday 5th December at 9.30am. He will visit with our pre-Montessori and 3-6 year olds. If parents wish to have a signed copy of any of his award winning books dedicated to their child, order forms are available from class teachers. Book Fair: Our annual Book Fair was held on Thursday 22nd November. It was an extremely successful event. The selection of books was wonderful and the cooperation from all involved Library Volunteer Committee, parents and staff made it a very positive experience. The Bookcreche.com hosted this year and allowed us approximately one third commission of the total income. Total sales amounted to €6,100. The commission will be divided between various reading schemes for the classes. Physical Education Ms Heffernan attended a meeting hosted by the Irish Hockey Association (IHA). The IHA is working on a new initiative for Junior hockey. As part of their plans gum shields and shin guards are now compulsory. Wearing gum shields has always been compulsory in our school but anyone without shin guards will not be allowed to take part in school, PE or lunchtime hockey.
