• 143. At the end of the novel, Atticus reads to Scout. Comment on his choice of
story. Does it have any connection with themes earlier in the novel and in its
ending?
Atticus states the Scout has ‘had enough scaring for a while’ and
reads her a comforting ghost story to help her fall asleep and forget
her recent upset. He is sensitive towards Scout after her ordeal. He
picks a story from the beginning of the book Jem had been reading:
’The Gray Ghost’. It wasn’t a scary story and had a ‘nice’ ending,
unlike the recent real events. Also it had a character who was
mistakenly accused and seen as a villain and who turned out to be
nice. There is a moral to this story as both Tom and Boo were
wrongly accused in different ways. Atticus’ choice of story
reinforces one the most important quotes of the novel, one that
applied to Tom Robinson and Boo Radley: ‘You never really
understand a person until you consider things from his point of
view-‘ & ‘-until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.’
THAT ANSWER REFERS IN DETAIL TO THE TEXT WHILE

create some quality material. You might consider sharing or
pooling answers with one or two friends as you build up this
resource. Don’t have the same answers for the whole class. It
even doesn’t matter if some of the answers in the class are
very different to some of yours. In fact that would be a good
thing!

Chapter 1 1. What do we learn in this opening Chapter about the setting, Maycomb?
Research your answer and write it. Here is an example.
County,, a ‘tired old
‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ by Harper Lee is set in Maycomb County
town’. It is a dull town in southern Alabama. The opening of the novel provides a
good sketch of the town with its mud, grass and hot rainy weather. It is a town
n
that changes a lot in the novel. The overall setting shows the life style of aan
Alabama rural town at the time of the Great Depression in the 1930s: townstowns-people,
farmers, poverty and high unemployment. It also shows the way people are
separated according to skin colour. This setting is significant as the main story is
about racism. The setting shows a way of life that is now long past.
